Granted, most of the about-festivals posting that happens in this space happens before the event in question. This is after. The 2026 edition of Doom City Fest took place on Feb. 28 in Mexico City, headlined by YOB with sets from Pelican, Primitive Man, Mephistofeles, Ocultum, Jaspe, Terror Cósmico, Apocalipsis and Cotton Mouth filling out the all-dayer with what is now documented-on-video volume and heart.

The sets were filmed by KingBong Productions, which, fair enough, with audio mixing/mastering by Fernando G Esteve, which explains why they sound so darn good. There aren’t clips up yet from all of the bands (if everybody was even filmed; I don’t know either way), but the five posted below should give you some sense of what the day was like, to say the very least. Pelican doing songs from 2025’s Flickering Resonance (review here) is cool to watch as they get into it, and I’ve yet to live a day I wouldn’t be happy to watch YOB play “Prepare the Ground,” so that’s an automatic win as well. Checking out the clips for this post was also my first time hearing atmosludgers Apocalipsis as well, and the complexity and the immersion of their nonetheless crushing tones were a cool find for me.

I checked out their 2015 LP, Dimensión Maldita, on their Bandcamp and it bears out the post-metallic-but-still-int0-metal-too onstage presentation of the video — a dark mirror to Pelican‘s airier tonality, if you want to think of the context of the day — though there’s more to it than that with factors like Primitive Man‘s unstoppable noise onslaught and the cultistry of Mephistofeles, but you know how these things go. In any case, I’ve put all five videos that are out now below, so if you want to make a choose-your-own-adventure out of it, by all means, have at it.

So far as I’ve seen, Doom City Fest hasn’t announced its 2027 date yet, but there’s time. They’ll host a Mexico City appearance for Amenra (who also played the first Doom City in Feb. 2020) in June, however, at the infamous Fuckoffroom. Topped off with Bongzilla and Conan, you wouldn’t accuse the lineup of Doom City Fest 2025 of not getting its point across in saying, “hi this year’s gonna be really frickin’ heavy.” And so it will, with Dopethrone backing those two weighty names — the former legends in the field of crusty stoner ultrasludge, the latter a singularly flattening entity in decpitation-prone doom charge — with their signature gritty sludge extremity, as long-running death-doomers Majestic Downfall from Santiago de Querétaro, Monterrey’s Black Glow, Mexico City’s Oculto and the fest-associated Vinnum Sabbathi (the latter also touring Europe this summer) give representation to the domestic Mexican underground, Black Tusk like Bongzilla are imported from Mexico’s increasingly embarrassing northern neighbors, while Bitterdusk journey north from Chile to take part in the all-dayer set for May 24.

There’s a bit of variety in terms of sound between the bands, but what it all rounds out to is the initial proposition: heft. These acts are united by a love and worship of capital ‘r’ Riffing, and as Mexico City’s heavy scene continues to flourish, Doom City provides a showcase for some of that and what looks like a killer day besides. Just in case you don’t have the energy to read insta-handles, the lineup for Doom City Fest 2024 this September in Mexico City is as follows: Weedeater, Eyehategod, Belzebong, Weedsnake, Mizmor, Reverence to Paroxysm, Deep Sea, Age of the Wolf and Desollado. And 1,200 pesos is about $68 USD, so don’t be put off by the price. This is the second edition of the festival behind one that took place in Feb. 2020 with Amenra, 16 and others, and well, if you had to live through the entire world shutting down a month later, that probably would’ve been a better precursor to that experience than most around the world had.

Weedeater are of course regulars on the US circuit, and ditto that Eyehategod, but I don’t know how often they hit Mexico City, let alone Belzebong coming over from Poland or Mizmor from Portland, Oregon, or Age of the Wolf from Costa Rica. With four of the total nine acts being Mexican, there’s respectable representation of the country’s native underground, and you can hear Weedsnake‘s 2023 album, Grimorium Cannabinarum, below. I missed it when it came out in the Fall — but as I like to remind others, it’s never actually too late — but they fit right in with the crusty weedianism at the top of that bill. Gonna make friends with Belzebong for sure.

I know September is packed in various parts of the world between the US and Europe, and here’s one more to add to that list:

Weedsnake, Grimorium Cannabinarum (2023)

Some pretty grim artwork, and a heavy-ass show to go with it. The first-ever Doom City Fest is set for Feb. 22, 2020, in Mexico City, and it presents some immediately impressive international pull. Amid national acts 33, Fumata, Satánico Pandemonium and Malamadre, you’ll note that a significant portion of the top of the bill comes from abroad. European post-metal forerunners Amenra, from Belgium, will headline, and Germany’s Mantar, Canada’s Tekarra and America’s The Obsessed and -(16)- will round out the nine-band all-dayer lineup. It’s a pretty striking assemblage, and at least within the more weighted end of the sonic spectrum, wants little for variety.

For the many festivals that populate the planet at this point, putting one together — even one that’s only a single day — is no minor task in terms of coordination and presentation, who needs to be where, what’s it going to look like and sound like and all the rest of it. Getting nine bands from your neighborhood on the same lineup is hard enough. To have a bill where the majority are coming across borders to play? And it’s your first one? I tip my hat to Doom City Fest 2020.
