Pre-Thanksgiving Media Blitz

Posted in Bootleg Theater on November 25th, 2009 by JJ Koczan

It is hour three of a football game about which you couldn’t care less if they paid you. Your family is just approaching the line of intoxicated where the passive aggression is activated. Your little cousin has just asked you where he or she can score some pot. You were hopeful this Turkeyyear would be different. You need an escape.

Suddenly, you remember The Obelisk posted a buttload of videos for just such an occasion, called it a “Pre-Thanksgiving Media Blitz,” figuring that maybe on this most familial of holidays, heads might need a break from everything, if only for a couple minutes. And is there a better way to spend that break than watching high quality live videos from Kyuss, Dozer, Colour Haze, Alabama Thunderpussy, Dixie Witch, Black Pyramid and — for those whose day is even a little more stressful — Acid Bath? You’ve already hid out in the bathroom long enough to do all the crossword puzzles in that book. Relax and enjoy the entertainment. At least catch your breath.

Truth be told, this is as much for me as it is for any of you who might see the benefit of it. Being the pajama-clad social misfit I am, even the thought of bringing my family together with that of The Patient Mrs. is enough to make me want to crawl into a hole. I fully anticipate excusing myself from the before-dinner goings on to come upstairs and watch at least one of these clips. And to make it holiday-special, I tried to find the best quality stuff I could. The Colour Haze video from DunaJam alone gives me a sense of inner peace, which I anticipate needing on Thanksgiving as much as another glass of wine.

If you’re like me (and if not, congratulations on your well-adjustedness), please enjoy the videos after the jump and remember, no matter what the tv tells you, you don’t actually have to get up at five in the morning to go shopping at Target.

Wait. Dixie Witch Didn’t Break Up?

Posted in Whathaveyou on August 27th, 2009 by JJ Koczan

If you’d asked me, I’d have sworn the departure of guitarist Clayton Mills meant the end of the seminal Austin rockers, but apparently Dixie Witch are moving on with a new guy named JT and a Texas-style weekend tour. Woke up this mornin’ and saw the news on StonerRock.com, and figured if anything warranted a cut and paste, it’s this:

The mighty Dixie Witch is back and will be playing four shows this weekend through Texas with thud rockers Weedeater.

Dixie Witch will be playing new material with a shout out to new guitarist JT. DW has been working all summer with JT and will begin regional touring this fall as they write more songs for an upcoming 2010 new record! Keep posted as new pics and website overhauls are under way…

Dixie Witch/Weedeater Tour Dates:
08/27/09: Dallas, TX Double Wide, with Blood of the Sun
08/28/09: Austin, TX Red 7, with Iron Age
08/29/09: San Antonio, TX Rock Bottom Tattoo Bar, with Iron Age
08/30/09: Houston, TX Walter’s on Washington, with Iron Age

Clayton Mills Leaves Dixie Witch

Posted in Whathaveyou on March 31st, 2009 by JJ Koczan

No more of this.As a fan of the band, I’m sorry to see him go, but given the reasons he cites on the band’s blog, I’ll have a hard time holding it against him. On behalf of The Obelisk, we wish (now) former Dixie Witch badass guitarist Clayton Mills all the best and hope to hear his six-string wizardry soon. Here’s what he had to say about it:

After 10 years as the founding guitarist of Dixie Witch, I am leaving the band to concentrate on family for awhile. I know that there have been some word of mouth rumors circulating so I just want to set the record straight. My wife and I are having a child this summer and I’m going to stay at home and take care of business there for the time being. The band will continue to play shows and tour with a new guitarist and we’ll just have to play it by ear as to my involvement with Dixie Witch in the future. By no means am I getting out of music or quitting playing guitar for good or any bullshit like that. Ya’ll will be hearing from me and my Les Paul again! Its been a great decade of playing music with the Witch, we’ve been all over and played nearly 1,000 live shows since 2000 and I’m very grateful for the experience and career I’ve had with the band.

I’d really like to thank all of those who have supported us over the years! The list of names could go on and on forever so I’d just like to say thanks to all the fans who have come out to the shows and bought our CDs and merch, all the bands we’ve shared the stage with, all the family we’ve made on the road (especially those who have opened their homes to us!), all the bartenders for the extended hospitality and all the clubs and venues who have let us rock their stages. I’d like to say an extra special thanks to Tone Deaf Touring (Erik, Troy and Greg), webmaster Jeff Downing, Scott and Small Stone Records, John Perez and Brainticket Records, Mauro and Arclight Records, Erik Larson and ATP, Jeff Pinkus and Honky, Suplecs, Joel Hamilton, Klaus at the Vibra Agency in Europe, Greg Barrett from Emissions from the Monolith, Walter and the Roadburn festival, the The duo 'Witch.Room 710, Emo’s Austinand of course to Trinidad and CC for being the incredible musicians that they are! Its been quite the ride!!! We have two more shows coming up in Texas with our good ‘ol friends Honky — April 10th at the Continental Club in Houston and April 11th at Room 710 in Austin.

Clayton
