Rezn Announce Full US Tour Supporting Cycles in the Infinite Dream

Posted in Whathaveyou on May 12th, 2026 by JJ Koczan

That Rezn single — the recently-unveiled “Cloudfall,” also below — has me remarkably curious to hear the rest of Cycles in the Infinite Dream, which is the album from whence it comes due out this summer through Sargent House. The Chicago-based heretofore dreampsych four-piece have announced two legs of the US tour they’ll undertake to support the record following its release, covering first the Eastern Seaboard between August and September and then picking up in October to hit the Pacific Coast.

You kind of had to figure something along these lines was coming — there was no way a Rezn record was coming and they weren’t going to tour; they’re a touring band — but the shape of the thing is interesting and makes me think they’ll be in Europe next Spring for festival time, and that they just might undertake more than one full US run for Cycles in the Infinite Dream. It’s like they forgot to put the word ‘touring’ in front of the title.

From the PR wire, or wherever, I can’t even remember where these things come from:

Rezn to Release Cycles in the Infinite Dream July 24

Posted in Whathaveyou on May 6th, 2026 by JJ Koczan

rezn by tom birch

If 2026 ended tomorrow, or let’s say in July, I don’t think you could argue that denizens of underground heavy didn’t get a full year’s work of quality records. I’ve not quite given up trying to keep notes on everything coming out, but definitely in my head there’s a wait-and-see-how-it-all-shakes-out impulse, which is to say year-end list time is going to be a wreck. That’s December-Me’s problem though, and Today-Me is way stoked on the new Rezn single and what it portends.

To wit, the crunching central riff of “Cloudfall” — wasn’t that the name of a Bond movie? — is clear and progressively sharp-cornered, and where murk has been a central factor in Rezn‘s output even unto 2024’s Burden (review here) and its 2023 companion, Solace (review here), the atmospherics here feel less central and the balance between impact and immersion seems to have been readjusted. A lap-stell-inclusive moment of post-metallic clarity on the band’s part? I know better than to predict what Rezn have in store on an album, even when I’m told, so I’ll reserve guesses until I’ve actually heard the thing.

The PR wire has nittygritties and suchandsundries to share, including European tour dates:

REZN Announce New Album, Cycles in the Infinite Dream, Out July 24th via Sargent House

REZN – the Chicago-based band of Rob McWilliams (vocals, guitar), Phil Cangelosi (bass), Patrick Dunn (drums), and Spencer Ouellette (synth/saxophone/lap steel) – announce their new album, Cycles in the Infinite Dream, out July 24th via Sargent House, and release the lead single/video, “Cloudfall.”

Over the last decade, REZN have carved out a unique place in the landscape of heavy music, chiseling away at the crude formations of the topography, mining the most concentrated metallic ore from the dirt, and shaping it all into something monumental, imposing, and divine. While theyʼve always fused seismic riffs with effortless beauty and grandeur, their shifting strategies for wielding that polarity have involved varied compositional and stylistic decisions, most notably the light-and-dark contrast of companion albums Solace (2023) and Burden (2024). With Cycles in the Infinite Dream, REZN masterfully harness the oppressive weight of their full sonic armory to celestial melodies and sublime synesthesia-inducing atmospherics in a manner so seamless it feels otherworldly, as if occupying a liminal space between two realities.

While REZN traffic in the unbridled realms of metal and untethered reaches of psychedelia, Cycles in the Infinite Dream showcases a band working with discipline and intention, even when those intentions are rendered to be purposefully cryptic. As the title implies, the album explores the nexus of our waking and nocturnal worlds. “We moved towards the dream and subconscious state as a lyrical concept and melodic theme,” the band explains. “The pseudo-waking state is a reflection of a second existence—something that you can flee to or be imprisoned by.” Much like the subconscious-guided work of David Lynch, Cycles in the Infinite Dream exists as parallax between the artist and the audience, creating an obscured and distorted space that is both familiar and alien, like a corridor into our past where we recognize our surroundings but somehow still feel lost within its warped geometry.

“Cloudfall” is a gripping rumination on sleep paralysis and its feedback loop of false awakenings. Thematically, “Cloudfall” perhaps best exemplifies the albumʼs examinations of cycles and dream states, evoking the nebulous and unsettling between-worlds of our consciousness while employing repeating motifs and resurfacing patterns. The song also showcases a new tool in REZNʼs trade: Ouelletteʼs lap steel guitar. The instrument conjures the extraterrestrial weightlessness of the pedal steel guitar featured on Brian Enoʼs Apollo: Atmospheres and Soundtracks album, providing a similar bridge between cosmic ambience and the wide-open terrains of Western music. The accompanying video was directed and shot by Chris Owsiany and Tom Conway.

One of REZNʼs most understated assets lies within guitarist/singer Rob McWilliamsʼ vocal approach. As Bandcamp praises, “Rob McWilliamsʼ clean vocals have a raw, nasal quality that presents as almost emo-esque, his melodies delivered with a palpable vulnerability that renders the musicʼs voidlike grandeur more human and the overall experience more approachable.” Eschewing heavy musicʼs guttural growls or operatic gymnastics, McWilliams has been steadfast in his soaring, delay-drenched melodies, providing a beguiling path through even the most primal and pummeling moments in the bandʼs repertoire. Like a piper calling you to join him, McWilliams forges through the darkness yet remains cloaked in mystery. The voice serves more as an instrument and a guidepost than as a vehicle for poetry or a portrait of a personality.

REZN have long operated—and thrived—in the subterranean realm of music heads who crave the aural equivalent of altered states. And with Cycles in the Infinite Dream, they have created their most psychotropic work to date.
