Isolation Dawn Premiere Video for Eponymous Debut Single

isolation dawn

Whatever else Isolation Dawn‘s debut single has — and it has plenty — it has a killer “Ough!” Listen and watch for it about 4:54 into the seven total minutes of the Brazilian collective’s eponymous first track. “Isolation Dawn,” which, yes, is a pandemic project, brings together members of Pesta, Dirty Grave, Riffcoven, Erasy, Weedevil, and others, and the idea is of course collaborative expression made possible through technology at a time when getting together in a rehearsal room and hammering out riffs wasn’t possible.

If you’re unfamiliar with Brazilian heavy, I don’t think you’d be wrong to consider Isolation Dawn a primer for some — definitely not all — of what’s going on in the country and the kind of groove being wrought. The vocals of Thiago Satyr bring a classic doom mindset (as well as the aforementioned “ough!”) as the guitars of André Bode and Leandro Carvalho hold down the central riff. There’s organ from Luan that gives a sense of grandiosity to the nod brought to bear by drummer Flavio Cavichioli and bassist Anderson Vaca as Melissa Rainbow shows up later on backing vocals. New stuff from any of these players would be noteworthy. The fact that they’ve all come together is all the more so.

What happens now with Isolation Dawn? I don’t know where all these people live — they’re not exactly going for minimalism with six people and maybe more involved — but is an album possible? If it’s been two years since they started working on this, is it something they can feasibly pursue, or maybe they already have? There could be a whole full-length in the can and it’s like a big secret that no one knows and then blamo, one day there it is. It’s a known unknown. And one for another time, perhaps, though I’ll note that in calling this the “debut” single, the PR wire below does seem to hint toward the possibility of more. Maybe they’ll be able to get in a room after all.

Been a minute since we had a socially-distant video. They will be a hallmark of this era in music.

Enjoy:

Isolation Dawn, “Isolation Dawn” video premiere

The Isolation Dawn project appears in mid-2020 amid the social isolation resulting from the pandemic, with both positive and negative developments in several aspects. Hyper coexistence, apprehension about the future and greater access to instruments, all converged in an attempt to put into practice a somewhat bold idea: a “collab Doom” formed by members of different bands of the genre.

Thus, guitarist Leandro Carvalho (ERASY) initially calls bassist Anderson Vaca (PESTA) and drummer Flávio Cavichioli (WEEDEVIL), consulting them about the idea. Without hesitation, approval happens. So, Leandro calls guitarist André Bode (RIFFCOVEN) and vocalist Thiago Satyr (WITCHING ALTAR), who also approve the idea and join the project. There is a suggestion by Flávio for the addition of one more voice in the band, and so Melissa Rainbow is added and closes the lineup. Additionally, Satyr calls Luan to contribute with Keyboards, and Pedro Vitus is invited to co-produce and mix and master the debut material, which resulted in a solid audiovisual for the track “Isolation Dawn,” edited by Berns, made by masterfully with clippings and videos of different formats.

Musically, the group’s debut track is a powerful and pulsating sound panel dedicated to Doom Metal, with explicit references, and more implicit ones, from several traditional names of the genre, in addition to presenting some of the musical DNA of each member and of their respective other projects.  “Isolation Dawn” is scheduled for release in February, on streaming and YouTube.

Abraxas, Fuzzrious & Bruxa Verde Team for Fuzzwitch Ritual Vol. 1 Compilation out Friday

Posted in Whathaveyou on August 4th, 2021 by JJ Koczan

As I understand it, this will be a series of benefit compilations, each one dedicated to a different cause. Fuzzwitch Ritual Vol. 1, put together at the combined significant behest of Abraxas Records, Fuzzrious and Bruxa Verde, will donate proceeds to Solidariedade Vegan. It’s got 17 bands from Brazil and beyond, and it costs all of three friggin’ dollars (minimum) through Bandcamp, so yeah, one way or the other the worst that happens is you pay a few bucks and check out some bands you might not’ve heard, even if you’re violently opposed somehow to homeless people eating healthy. Which, if you think about it, it probably a position you’ll want to reexamine at some point.

There’s a lot going on here, sound-wise, band-wise, label-wise, cause-wise, compilation-series-wise, but let the big takeaway be that this is a thing that’s happening, it might happen more, and I think it’s something worth your time and three bucks of your hard-earned. If you can’t donate and just want to listen, well, then you heard some cool tunes. Okay.

Here’s info:

va fuzzwitch ritual vol 1

The compilation Fuzzwitch Ritual is the result of a partnership between Bruxa Verde Produções and the labels Fuzzrious and Abraxas Records, three representative supporters of Brazilian’s Stoner related scene working through PR and divulgation activities, label’s releases and more.

Bringing together sixteen tracks from sixteen different bands from countries like Brazil, Mexico, Chile, Greece and the United States the compilation will be released at Bandcamp on August 6th and has as its motto the total reversal of sales values for the social cause of Solidariedade Vegan, a project managed by Brazilian punk rock legend João Gordo (Ratos de Porão) and his wife Vivi Torrico, where they develop a social work dedicated to feeding and supporting vulnerable people in homeless situation and also focused on vegan food.

This first edition of the project has prominent names from the national scene and also foreign bands such as Slow Voyage (Chile), Electric Cult (Mexico) and The Supernauts (Greece). Genres such as Stoner Rock, Doom Metal, Psychedelic Rock and Hard Rock are embraced by the compilation which aims to unite the labels and scenario linked to the social cause, with bands supported/released/published by the participating labels. Snow Premiere “Prensado” From Fast ‘n’ Heavy Loud ‘n’ Slow out Jan. 20

Posted in audiObelisk on January 8th, 2021 by JJ Koczan

snow

The ethic is laid forth immediately: skate fast, die hard. Such is the title and repeated opening lyric of the first track on Snow‘s debut album, Fast ‘n’ Heavy Loud ‘n’ Slow, and over the next two minutes or so, the quarantine-era project headed by Rodrigo Neves with Rodrigo Borba and Andrez Machado elbow their message into the consciousness in a fashion that’s likewise catchy and blown out. In a time of limited movement due to pandemic lockdowns, it’s not hard to see what might’ve been the motivation behind Neves getting the band “together” — in the socially-distant sense, anyhow — in that the eight-track release runs a brash and bruised 24 minutes and purposefully aligns itself with a heavily distorted skate punk attitude. Though by no means emotionally driven in surface theme, there’s a palpable sense of release across the board.

That’s true in the post-early-C.O.C. chug and scorched lead work of “Prensado,” the pick-slide-into-full-sprint of “Perfect Lies,” the knuckledragging lumber of “Nowhere Fast” and the feedback wielded so capably in the crunch of “Paradoxical Conflicts.” snow fast n heavy loud n slowTracks are blown out and laden with intent, and because of the latter, I’m not willing to simply write this off as a case of fuckall and leave it at that. “Escape From Brasil,” the longest cut at 3:44 (the version on Bandcamp is 5:11, and also the running order is different), brings a deceptive depth of mix with guitars ringing behind the central stomp like a siren unless I’m hearing things and in that song and the subsequent “Good Vibez From Hell” there are undertones of almost proto-metal, the latter coming through in its back end with the album’s slowest crawl as though to make sure all sides of the title were duly represented before “Crying Lies” rounds out with one more sub-three-minute primitive blast.

All of Snow‘s social media aligns around the ID ‘snow.hates.you,’ which is kind of a downer sentiment, but fair enough. In addition to living up to the four descriptors of their debut album in the music, I guess they’re also willing to make the URL real, since the track that’s supposed to be a premiere below has been on Bandcamp already for I don’t know how long. Does it matter? Not really. This is the third single from the record and they’ve got a stream booked for the full LP, so at best it’s a stopgap I pushed for because I wanted something cool to accompany a few words about the album coming out and I dug the sound. If anyone feels like calling it out that the song’s already out there, you earn a hearty shrug from me. I ain’t in charge of everything.

But the record’s right on and that’s what matters. And you can hear “Prensado” in the player below, and I’ve included the Bandcamp stream for the other tracks as well. Whole thing’s due out Jan. 20.

Enjoy:

On the next 20th of January, the project SNOW will release their first studio album. “Fast N´Heavy Loud N´Slow” brings eight tracks of a sound divided between the speed and the frenetic weight of Hardcore and Skate Punk, and the slow and dense slowdown of tempo of Stoner and a little Sludge, in just over half an hour of release.
