Bootleg Theater and Nebula’s Exhaustion

Posted in Bootleg Theater on April 10th, 2009 by JJ Koczan

As the week draws to a close and I make ready to head out to Connecticut for the next two days — Redscroll Records in Wallingford, I’ll see you tomorrow afternoon — I can only leave you this holiday?weekend (Happy Passover and Easter, whatever your version of the pagan equinox celebration might be) with the below killer video shot in France. It’s heavy psych legends Nebula doing “Long Day” in Paris last year. Enjoy and have a great weekend.

Bootleg Theater and the Originators

Because it’s absolutely gorgeous out in the valley despite some clouds rolling in, I’m feeling like summer time and summer time means Blue Cheer. As such, here’s a video of the original stoner rock band, live from Virginia Beach, VA on the local show Up all Night, doing “Rollin’ Dem Bones” from 2007’s What Doesn’t Kill You — their first album since 1991. Classic stoner pace. If you’d like to check out the whole show, all you need to do is make a wish and click these words. Enjoy and have a great weekend.

Bootleg Theater: Beavis Loves Crowbar

Posted in Bootleg Theater on March 14th, 2009 by JJ Koczan

You know there’s a whole generation of kids who have no idea who Beavis & Butt-Head are? I have no idea what they’re teaching in schools nowadays, but it should be this. Here’s the genius work of Mike Judge in a video that recalls a simpler time, when not only did MTV have shows worth watching, but had videos as well. Crowbar, “Existence is Punishment,” as seen by Beavis & Butt-Head. Have a great weekend.

The Atomic Bitchwax are the Catchiest Band in the World…

Posted in Bootleg Theater on March 9th, 2009 by JJ Koczan

… And here’s the proof:

I know the early days with Ed Mundell get all the “where it’s at” points, but for my money, when the Bitchwax put out the four Jack Endino-produced studio tracks on Boxriff, they nailed their sound perfectly. Rawer and less poppy/mature than subsequent studio album 4, those songs took everything about predecessor 3 that was awesome and gave it a healthy dose of Jersey intensity (funny that they had to go to Seattle to do it). Note guitarist Finn Ryan‘s vocal contributions with bassist Chris Kosnik and since-departed drummer Keith Ackerman ripping it up. Great stuff.
