Darsombra Round out 2015 with Weekday Weekender

Posted in Whathaveyou on December 29th, 2015 by JJ Koczan

Baltimore experimental duo Darsombra — not satisfied with the 109 different cities they played across the US earlier this year — are playing three gigs this week, sneaking two more dates in before 2016 hits and then kicking off the New Year in hometown style at The Crown. The two-piece of guitarist Brian Daniloski and synthesist/vocalist/visual artist Ann Everton had noted intent to make a new album after finishing that mammoth, three-leg run, and I see no reason that can’t pan out as noted, but it’s pretty telling of Darsombra as a project that basically wants to do as much as humanly possible all the time that they can’t get out of 2015 without playing just these last couple shows. I dig that. A lot.

Info and whatnot:

Transcendental audio/visual rock duo Darsombra have packed and prepared their shuttle for launch, readying themselves for journey to inner space. Brian Daniloski (a veteran of metal bands Meatjack and Trephine), pilots, navigates, and controls the sound of Darsombra, alternating between searing guitar riffs, leads, loops, mammoth vocal swells, and soundscapes. He takes one part metal, one part psychedelic rock, one part experimental, and dashes of prog, glam, and krautrock, to soundtrack the voyage. Filmmaker Ann Everton joins him on vocals, synthesizer, and percussion, as well as stewarding us along the way by projecting her kinetic, psychotropic videos specifically composed to the music, engulfing the audience within the trip.

Following releases on At A Loss, Public Guilt, Underradar and others, Darsombra worked with Exile On Mainstream for the release of Climax Community in 2012. The three tracks on the LP traverse forty-five minutes of the outfit’s unique, slow-building, organic transcendental rock. Recent tours in the U.S. and Europe have paired Darsombra with Wino, Jucifer, Thrones, Floor, and Stinking Lizaveta.

This week, Darsombra plays our last shows of 2015/first show of 2016:

Dec 29 – Asheville NC @ Static Age Records w/ Nate Hall
Dec 30 – Norfolk VA @ Electroganic w/ Wandcarver, Clary Sage
Jan 1 – Baltimore MD @ The Crown w/ Height, Gavin Riley Smoke Machine, Hemlock Ernst, EU1OGY, DJ Secret Weapon Dave

Darsombra Announce 109 Tour Dates for 2015

Posted in Whathaveyou on November 11th, 2014 by JJ Koczan

darsombra

For Darsombra‘s sake, I hope they have a really comfortable van. I thought it was pretty admirable when the Baltimore drone/video duo of Brian Daniloski and Ann Everton hit the road for 10 solid weeks earlier this year — they were awesome to watch when they opened for Floor in Allston — but the plan for 2015 goes even further. Three legs of touring, each of them more than most bands dare to take on for a year in itself, and it’s made up entirely of places the two-piece wanted to visit within the US. Fucking a.

Hard not to admire the work ethic. I guess Everton and Daniloski have just sort of figured out how to make being on the road a significant portion of their lives.  They’re (rightly) calling it the “Three-Legged Monster” tour, and it starts off Feb. 12. They still have some work in putting it together and finding venues, so if you’ve got a place that needs some drones and cool visuals, hit them up. Unsurprisingly, they seem pretty flexible on the whole thing.

Jaw-dropping list of dates follows:

Darsombra’s Three-Legged Monster Tour 2015

Hi Everybody! Happy fall!

We had so much fun on our ten week tour of the United States this past spring, that we pulled out a map and counted all the cities in North America we wanted to try and visit next year. . . and it ended up being over 100 places! A little much for one fell swoop, so we’re splitting the tour up into what we have been affectionately calling the “Three-Legged Monster”.

Nothing like dreaming big! If you can help us with anything in your town, please be in touch. We’ll play in your music venue, house, gallery, bar, cave, head shop, museum, botanical conservatory, nudist colony, burn, orgy ;) …wherever we can!

And of course, as always, thank you! Thank you for encouraging us to keep doing what we do as artists, as musicians, as travelers, as friends. We’re looking forward to visiting with you all in 2015!

Totimoshi Sort of Announce New Drummer; Playing L.A. on Thursday

Posted in Whathaveyou on March 13th, 2013 by JJ Koczan

I dug what drummer Chris Fugitt brought to Totimoshi on the band’s last album, 2011’s Avenger (review here), and apparently the band did too, since even though he moved halfway across the country, founders Tony Aguilar and Meg Castellanos haven’t completely parted ways with him. Still, time and gigs march on, so with new part-timer Derrick Hostetter, Totimoshi will be headlining tomorrow night at the Silverlake Lounge.

Details and badass poster follow, courtesy of the PR wire:

TOTIMOSHI Inducts New Drummer

New Live Actions Begin Via Headlining LA Show This Thursday

Los Angeles-based desert rock trio TOTIMOSHI has revamped its lineup and will break in the new blood this week at a special hometown show.

Following the their latest LP, Avenger — released in 2011 via At A Loss Recordings — TOTIMOSHI has been on somewhat of a live hiatus for the past year or so due to the partial departure of drummer Chris Fugitt. While Chris remains in the band’s official lineup, he now lives halfway across the country, so the band’s founding members — bassist Meg Castellanos and vocalist/guitarist Tony Aguilar — have recruited additional drummer Derrick Hostetter in the interim. Having played and toured in Illinois punk bands in the 90’s, and having formed and played in various electronic bands in the Peoria area, Hostetter relocated to the West Coast, recording three albums with San Francisco-based band Cast Of Thousands, two records with The Bruises and Seeking Empire, as well as LA-based hardcore act Bough Breaks.

TOTIMOSHI will perform live with Derrick for the first time this Thursday, March 14th at a hometown headlining show at the Silverlake Lounge, with support from Gaytheist, Stripper Pussy and Dolphins n Shit.

3/14/2013 Silverlake Lounge – Los Angeles, CA w/ Gaytheist, Stripper Pussy, Dolphins n Shit
