Roadburn 2014: Sets from Freedom Hawk, Inter Arma, Aqua Nebula Oscillator, Graves at Sea, Anciients, Glitter Wizard, Hark and The Old Wind Available to Stream

inter arma

Every year at Roadburn, there are a couple bands — guaranteed, without fail — whose sets you want to watch but don’t get to. Maybe you’re somewhere else seeing a once-in-a-lifetime show or reunion or one-time-only thing or maybe you just get the schedule wrong and miss it. This batch of Roadburn 2014 audio streams has the three bands I most regret not seeing at this year’s fest: Freedom HawkInter Arma (pictured above), and Aqua Nebula Oscillator. I wouldn’t have minded catching AnciientsHarkGlitter Wizard or The Old Wind either, but those three stung particularly hard.

In the case of Inter Arma, their single-song 2014 full-length, The Cavern, has made a considerable splash on the Readers Poll so far, and like their fellow Virginians, Freedom Hawk, they were a band whose schedule just didn’t match my own. At least I can hear what I missed out on, thanks to Marcel van de Vondervoort and his crew, who’ve returned again with another diligently gathered round of primo live recordings. As we move closer to 2015 and the next incarnation of the festival — Roadburn 2015 has a few lineup announcements left, but it seems to be by and large set — all the better to cap off the year that was by tying up such loose ends.

Check out the streams on the players below, snagged from the Dutch website Vpro 3voor12:

Anciients – Roadburn 2014

Aqua Nebula Oscillator – Roadburn 2014

Freedom Hawk – Roadburn 2014

Glitter Wizard – Roadburn 2014

Graves at Sea – Roadburn 2014

Hark – Roadburn 2014

Inter Arma – Roadburn 2014

The Old Wind – Roadburn 2014

Thanks as always to Walter and the Roadburn crew for permission to host the streams. For the other batches of audio from Roadburn 2014 — there’s some stuff worth digging for — click herehere, here and/or here, and to read the coverage from this year’s fest, click here.

Aqua Nebula Oscillator US Tour Starts April 23

Posted in Whathaveyou on April 15th, 2014 by JJ Koczan

French psych rockers Aqua Nebula Oscillator will spend three weeks on the road in the US starting April 23 and including slots at Austin Psych Fest and Scion Rock Fest. A run that’s the better part of a month long and apparently the precursor to more touring on the West Coast is a bold undertaking for the spacey outfit, who released their fourth album, Spiritus Mundi, late last year on Tee Pee Records, but as you can see in the list of dates below, they’re playing with some killer acts along the way, including King Buffalo, The Golden Grass and Electric Citizen. Keeping good company always helps.

The PR wire puts it like this:

French Psych Rockers AQUA NEBULA OSCILLATOR Announce U.S. Tour Dates

Major Market Trek to Include High Profile Performances as Part of Austin Pysch Fest and Scion Rock Fest

Celebrated French underground psych rock trio AQUA NEBULA OSCILLATOR has announced a U.S. tour in support of its new album Spiritus Mundi. Now, with a head of steam and an established name in the U.S., AQUA NEBULA OSCILLATOR will perform the first-ever U.S. live shows of its storied career. The tour will kick off on April 23 in NYC and include A-level performances as part of both the Austin Psych Fest (May 2) and Scion Rock Fest (May 17).

AQUA NEBULA OSCILLATOR — formed in 2000 by David Sphaèr’os — creates utterly unique and fantastically tripped out occult psych rock inspired by parallel dimensions, voodoo, ethnic trance, horror and cult movies (from the 1920’s to the 60’s), painters like Hieronymus Bosch and Salvador Dali, dark underground literature (H. P. Lovecraft, Isidore Ducasse, Antonin Artaud), aliens and UFOs! A modern mix of Krautrock / motorik with Hawkwind-style psychedelia, Hendrix-styled, ultra tripped out guitar action and an apocalyptic, Raw Power energy, AQUA NEBULA OSCILLATOR’s mind-burning, dark and dirty “chaos-sound” is a cauldron full of seething, psychedelic rock. ANO looks and sounds like it was buried in a tomb in the late 60’s / 70’s and has just been dug up, ready to resume its wild sound-making once again.

AQUA NEBULA OSCILLATOR tour dates:
April 23 Manhattan, NY Pianos (Free, Midnight show)
April 24 Brooklyn, NY Saint Vitus Bar (w/ WHITE HILLS)
April 25 Philadelphia, PA Dobbs
April 26 York, PA The Depot (w/ The Golden Grass )
April 27 Baltimore, MD Holy Frijoles (* FREE show w/ The Golden Grass)
April 28 Richmond, VA Strange Matter (w/ ZOMBIE ZOMBIE)
April 29 Asheville, NC Double Crown
April 30 Atlanta, GA 529 (w/ Abby Gogo)
May 1 Mobile, AL Music Box (w/ Electric Sheep)
May 2 Austin, TX As part of Austin Psych Fest
May 5 Little Rock, AR Vino’s
May 6 Nashville, TN The Other Basement
May 7 Cincinnati, OH MOTR Pub (w/ Electric Citizen)
May 8 Pittsburgh, PA Brillo Box (w/ Shaky Shrines)
May 9 Rochester, NY Bug Jar (w/ Roz and the Rice Cakes)
May 10 Providence, RI Firehouse 13 (w/ Nervous Virgins)
May 12 Manhattan, NY Pianos
May 17 Pomona, CA * As part of Scion Rock Fest

AQUA NEBULA OSCILLATOR is: David Sphaèr’os (Guitar, Vox, Sithar and Organ, Master Of Ceremony), Adrian Bang (Drums, Orchestra Conductor), Andreas Carrere (oscillation, organ, flute, backing vocals) and Alexis Raphaeloff (Bass, EarthQuaker). Follow the group on Facebook.

With no slowdown in the music coming out as we move into the fall, it’s time for another audiObelisk podcast. Like last month, the idea here was to keep it super-simple, not go too long or get lost too much in including stuff just for the hell of it. Whether it’s a big band or someone you’ve never heard of in this tracklist, it’s all quality, and most of it is new. A couple of these albums haven’t even come out yet.

Things get pretty dark in the second of the two hours, but I figured what the hell? It starts off rockin’ with Sasquatch and The Freeks and so on, so it seemed there was room to doom out for a while, and once I threw in The Body, there was nothing to do but plummet even further. As it winds down, there’s some transition back to more rocking fare though with Earthless, so it’s not like it gets totally lost and drowns in the mire of dark tones and sonic abrasion. I know you were worried. I was too.

Like last time, it clocks in at just under two hours long. I hope you download and enjoy the tracks. Here’s the full rundown of what’s included:

First Hour:

Sasquatch, “The Message” from IV (2013)
Monster Magnet, “Mindless Ones” from Last Patrol (2013)
The Freeks, “The Secret Pathway” from Full On (2013)
Red Fang, “Blood Like Cream” from Whales and Leeches (2013)
Pyramido, “Tiden är Kommen” from Saga (2013)
Hollow Leg, “Ride to Ruin” from Abysmal (2013)
YOB, “Ether” from Catharsis (2013 Reissue)
Seremonia, “Suuri Valkeus” from Ihminen (2013)
Aqua Nebula Oscillator, “Human Toad” from Spiritus Mundi (2013)
Jesu, “Everyday” from Everyday I Get Closer to the Light from Which I Came (2013)
Ayahuasca Dark Trip, “To the Holy Mountain” from Mind Journey (2013 Reissue)

Second Hour:

All Them Witches, “Born under a Bad Sign” (2013)
The Body, “Prayers Unanswered” from Christs, Redeemers (2013)
Primitive Man, “Antietam” from Scorn (2013)
Windhand, “Cassock” from Soma (2013)
Atlantis, “Omen” from Omens (2013)
Earthless, “Violence of the Red Sea” from From the Ages (2013)

Total running time: 1:59:33

Hope you dig it. Thanks for listening.

Roadburn 2014 Lineup: Sula Bassana, Aqua Nebula Oscillator, Scorpion Child and The Cult of Dom Keller Added

Posted in Whathaveyou on September 4th, 2013 by JJ Koczan

With Loop as the headliner, Mikael Akerfeldt as the curator and previously announced performances from The Heads, Conan, Freedom Hawk, True Widow, Gozu, Windhand, Inter Arma and more, Roadburn continues to inspire. Today four more acts (unless, like last week, I’ve missed a shit-ton of other news, though I think I got it) have been announced. Sula Bassana, Aqua Nebula Oscillator and The Cult of Dom Keller are sure to add to the already super-trippy side of the bill, while Scorpion Child preach a gospel of classic riffing and bluesy swagger.

Here are the announcements, courtesy of Roadburn:

During recent editions of the Roadburn Festival, Dave Schmidt aka Sula Bassana graced the stage with Electric Moon to explore an unknown distant psych galaxy through hallucinatory spacerock. We at Roadburn HQ are drawn to his mesmerizing music like a swarm of tripped-out moths to a flame. Whether he is jamming with Weltraumstaunen, Liquid Visions, Krautzone, Sudstern 44, Zone Six, Interkosmos or Electric Moon, there is simply no one who can channel the krautrock vibe like Schmidt.

Dave and his myriad bands are well-known for their fantastic far out live performances, but Sula Bassana shows have been a rare occurrence indeed, never mind performances with a full band under his solo moniker. As you can imagine, we are elated to announce that Dave Schmidt has agreed to play Roadburn Festival 2014 exclusively as Sula Bassana on Saturday, April 12th in Het Patronaat in Tilburg, The Netherlands.

Backed by a full band – Komet Lulu (bass), Marcus Schnitzler (The Spacelords, Electric Moon / drums), Rainer Neeff (The Pancakes, Zone Six, Krautzone / guitar) – Sula Bassana (guitar / synthesizers) will propel us through hyperspace, taking us on an utterly absorbing and surreal journey into the captivating and colorful sounds of the cosmos.

Vintage proto-metal lovers rejoice! Scorpion Child, hailing from Austin, Texas, will bring their killer heavy rock to Roadburn Festival 2014 on Friday, April 11th at Het Patronaat in Tilburg, The Netherlands. With their blues and krautrock-influenced heavy psych rock, the band fits right in with the likes of Graveyard, Kadavar and Witchcraft, while adding their own twist to the good times, good vibes and catchy hooks found on the great records of the 1970s.

When it comes to straight up, kickass hardrock, Scorpion Child delivers! Do yourself a favor and don’t miss ‘em at Roadburn 2014.

We at Roadburn HQ have become obsessed with The Cult of Dom Keller‘s druggy bliss lately, as the Nothingham (UK) four piece channels the lysergic spirits of 13th Floor Elevators, Stooges, Black Sabbath, Spaceman 3 and Acid Mothers Temple into full blown, third-eye transcendentalism.

You can almost hear the trippy, kaleidoscopic flashbacks through hazy clouds of obscurity, flashing strobes and glowing smoke through the band’s chemical feast of fuzzy, psychedelic madness, part shimmering feedback explorations, swamp-infested blues bastardizations, and part mind expanding stoner rock manipulations.

The Cult of Dom Keller will document our delirious, collective hallucinations by gathering on Thursday, April 10th at the 013 venue in Tilburg, The Netherlands, and the band’s captivating, tranced out sounds will definitely echo through the deepest valleys of your mind.

It was only a matter of time until French droned out psych-space wranglers Aqua Nebula Oscillator found their way to Roadburn Festival.

The band’s super charged, heady collision between extended Hawkwind freakouts and the raw, metallic swagger of the Stooges is a perfect fit, and we’re excited to announce that Aqua Nebula Oscillator will appear at the 2014?s Afterburner on Sunday, April 13th at the 013 venue in Tilburg, The Netherlands.
