Will Z. Premieres “A New Mirrored You” Video

Psychedelic strangeness abounds on A New Mirrored You, the upcoming but currently streamable album from Belgian acid folk wizard Will Z., and for a certain segment among the converted, that strangeness should be taken as preaching a long-running off-kilter gospel from Gandalf onward. Z., formerly of Nasoni Records psych explorers Cosmic Trip Machine, guides A New Mirrored You through classic psych-folk, a fire-lit cauldron of late ’60s and early ’70s influences playing out in the ramble of “Troubadour,” the harmonies of “Through the Wind” and the serene strum of “Deep in the Forest,” and though he’s not alone in that process, the record maintains a sense of post-Donovan intimacy, playing off traditions either lost or so warped they were never actually traditional or maybe we’re so warped that we’ve forgotten how much fun it can be to be absurd. It’s hard to know sometimes.
Or all the time.
In any case, with full enjoyment of the melodic oddity of the track, I’m proud today to be hosting the video premiere for Will Z.‘s “A New Mirrored You,” the title-track of the album. The clip is no less out-there than the record itself, Z. taking some hard stares at the camera whist in the woods mouthing the woods to the song. If you like weird, or if you think you like weird, “A New Mirrored You” will most certainly scratch that itch, but it’s worth noting that this track and the album from whence it comes has more to offer in terms of its songwriting, arrangement and performance than simply that. On A New Mirrored You, Z. creates worlds with his arrangements of elements like keys, strings, percussion, bird song, flute, etc., and then plays the songs out within those worlds. A core of human songcraft remains, no matter how far out A New Mirrored You goes, and that winds up being what ultimately ties all the varied material together.
