The Obelisk Presents: Planet of Zeus First-Ever North American Tour Dates

Posted in The Obelisk Presents on February 11th, 2020 by JJ Koczan

planet of zeusplanet of zeus us tour banner

Go, just go. Go see Planet of Zeus. The Greek heavy rockers are coming to the US (plus a couple Canadian shows) in April, and you should be there to see it. Not the least because they’re traveling in the certifiably legendary company of Fatso Jetson, as well as Druids — what a fucking tour — and not just because I get an ego boost out of seeing a logo for this site at the bottom of tour posters, but also because it’s their first time here and they come in celebration of their 20th anniversary as a band and should be accordingly made to feel nothing but welcome every step of the way.

Seriously, you know the vast, vast majority of the planet thinks Americans are assholes, right? Well, you can work to counter that impression by showing up. Hell’s bells, buy a t-shirt, if not because you dug the crap out of Planet of Zeus‘ 2019 record, Faith in Physics (review here), then at very least for diplomacy’s sake. You’re an ambassador. Start acting like it.

Before they make the journey across the Atlantic, Planet of Zeus will be out starting later this month in Europe — call it a pre-victory lap — and that’s awesome, but please know that I’m honored to have involved in presenting this in the tiny way that it is and humbled to have even been asked. Get your ass out of the house. Please. We want them to come back.

Dates follow as posted today by the band:

The Obelisk Presents: Mars Red Sky First US Shows Since 2016

Posted in The Obelisk Presents on January 23rd, 2020 by JJ Koczan

mars red sky

Before they return to the US for the first time in four years, when among other shows they appeared at Psycho Las Vegas and The Obelisk All-Dayer in Brooklyn, French heavy psychedelic progressives Mars Red Sky will continue to support their 2019 album, The Task Eternal (review here), with dates mostly in France but also touching into Germany. They did a full round of European touring last year and no doubt will be on the road again before 2020 is done, because that’s pretty much how they roll.

Given that I’ve been lucky enough to see them a couple times at this point, and that I’m already looking forward to doing so again in Norway this October at Høstsabbat, for which they were recently confirmed, I’m all the more thrilled to have The Obelisk on board with presenting their upcoming run through the West Coast. Starting in Chicago on May 28, they’ll head toward the Pacific and make their way through California up to Portland and Seattle before crossing into Canada to close out in Vancouver on June 7. It’s an efficient run that only seems like more of a gotta-show-up-style no-brainer with Colorado’s Dreadnought supporting.

My standard for presenting shows is this: Is it worth leaving the comforts of home to go out and be among other human beings for a span of hours? Would I go to that show?

The answer here is a clear yes, I would. I hope you will.

Dates and info follow, as just announced by the band:

MARS RED SKY – THE TASK ETERNAL – AMERICAN TOUR

We’re thrilled to announce a new tour in North America this spring that will take us from Chicago to Vancouver with the great Dreadnought, past a number of cities we’ve never visited before (Denver, Santa Fe, Mesa) and other hot spots we’re excited to go back to!! Artwork done by the one, the only, Carlos Olmo Art.

“Four years have past since our last visit, time well spent touring and composing material for our newly released fourth album, The Task Eternal. This upcoming tour will be the opportunity for us to perform these new songs in America after extensively touring Europe. Stay tuned and see you out there!!”

Beyond a highly recognizable sound imprint, Mars Red Sky craft their own otherworldly atmospheres. The trio has been entrancing crowds for a decade now, with their eponymous debut coming out in 2011, following a recording session in Spain’s mystic Bardenas desert. Whether you listen to the albums or experience their music on stage, their hulking yet trippy brand of stoner rock will take you on an infinite journey. From the beginning, the Bordelais trio becomes a major live act, leading them to play the biggest rock and metal stages (SXSW, Hellfest 2014 and 2017, Desertfest London and Berlin, Roadburn, Eurockéennes). After another two years spent on the road, 2019 felt like the right time to return with their brand new album “The Task Eternal” on Listenable Records, which is set to be followed by a couple of extensive European tours.

The Obelisk Presents: Kadavar Touring Australia & New Zealand in March 2020

Posted in The Obelisk Presents, Whathaveyou on December 3rd, 2019 by JJ Koczan

I’m rarely so filled with pride and sheer delight as I am when I see a logo for The Obelisk on a poster for a tour happening very, very far away from where I live. And if it’s something amazing, all the better. German heavy rock forerunners Kadavar will head Down Under for a tour in Spring — or I guess Fall — 2020 supporting their latest long-player, For the Dead Travel Fast (review here). As that album is sure to feature on my list later this month of 2019’s finest offerings, I’m all the more stoked to have The Obelisk on the admittedly-not-insignificant list of presenters for the run. I mean, seriously, I’m a dork from New Jersey. Who the hell am I to (even co-) present anything on the other side of the world? So awesome.

Special thanks to Beats Cartel for having The Obelisk on board for this one. To say it’s an honor would be putting it mildly.

Here’s the press release, as much for future-me to look back on fondly as for your current information:

kadavar aus nz tour

GERMAN FUZZ KINGS KADAVAR ARE COMING TO NEW ZEALAND

There are few bands who’ve had more of an effect on the course of classic heavy retro rock this decade than Germany’s KADAVAR, having never sounded so much in command of their music.

Arguably the hardest working band in European rock, Kadavar have established themselves quite simply in a different league form their retro-rock labelled peers, smashing out large capacity international tours and festivals (Hellfest/Psycho Las Vegas/Download/Wacken) en masse and landing German and US chart positions for a host of album releases. Latest album release For the Dead Travel Fast (Nuclear Blast), reignites new depths and heights alike on this their fifth and darkest full-length.

Highly regarded as one of the most explosive heavy psych live experiences on the planet, Kadavar return to Australian and New Zealand shores in March/April 2020 for Beats Cartel on the back of a Mojo Burning Festival appearance. Not having visited Australian since their 2013 tour with Blues Pills and the follow-up 2016 headline tour, interest will be paramount in 2020 to catch one of the best names in the business perform albums worth of new live material.

The band’s fifth record is a perilous journey into the land of the dead, a foray into the bleakest corners of our minds. A heavy, slow-paced, throbbing force of guitar, bass and drums, preciously enriched by spooky synths and a brooding narrative reminiscent of the Victorian death-cult.

“Something like this wouldn’t have been possible earlier in our career. Only now do we know each other well enough to pull off something like this” drummer Tiger nods, “We have the feeling we created something new while at the same time having rediscovered our core DNA. Feels damn good.”

Get ready to witness something special… Kadavar are coming. For the Dead Travel Fast 2020 Australian and New Zealand tour stops in a host of cities across the two countries including Sydney, Newcastle, Brisbane, Christchurch, Wellington, Auckland, Canberra, Adelaide, Melbourne, Scarborough and Perth. All shows on sale now at www.beatscartel.com. National supports will be announced soon.

The Obelisk Presents: Godmaker, Hyborian & Migrator at Saint Vitus Bar (Matinee) Nov. 17

Posted in The Obelisk Presents on October 23rd, 2019 by JJ Koczan

godmaker hyborian migrator ghouls

Alright, let’s face facts. Nov. 17, you weren’t going to be anywhere other than the Saint Vitus Bar. That’s the night Monolord and Blackwater Holylight are playing. Obviously you’re going. Obviously I’m going. Obviously we’re all going and we’re all looking very much forward to that.

What I’m saying to you is, get there early. Super-early. 2PM early. Because there’s an opportunity here to turn a pretty heavy night into an all-day extravaganza, and there’s even a convenient break in between for you to, I don’t know, get some food or coffee-up or do whatever you need to do.

In conjunction with Ode to Doom, The Obelisk (you are here) is presenting Godmaker with (Kenny Appell of Cleanteeth, Goes Cube, etc., filling in on drums), Hyborian and Migrator on Sunday afternoon, Nov. 17, ahead of the evening’s festivities. Is it going to be absolutely insane? Yes. Should you take Monday off from school, work, or whatever of life’s duties might otherwise occupy your time? Totally. Why? Because chances like this don’t come along every day, and years from now, you’re still going to remember that time you told the rest of the universe to buzz off and did it up proper in Brooklyn, whereas otherwise, it’s just gonna be another Monday of the same old crap that, barring disaster, will be another in a series of forgettable such Mondays. Even if you have a good day doing whatever it is you do, I submit it won’t compete with plowing your brains into oblivion with riffs by hitting these two shows back-to-back.

And hey, if you need to, need to, need to go to work or whatever on Monday, a Sunday matinee still gives you plenty of time to get home and get yourself ready for the morning. Either way, you don’t lose.

Godmaker‘s got the show info as follows:

The Obelisk Presents: Sunnata & Yatra European Tour

Posted in The Obelisk Presents on July 25th, 2019 by JJ Koczan

sunnata yatra tour banner

The response this year to Yatra‘s debut album, Death Ritual (discussed here), has been stunning, but no less has been the amount of work the Maryland band have put in to support it. They’ve reportedly got a follow-up recorded now, and with Poland’s Sunnata getting ready to issue a new record of their own next year, the two make an excellent complement to each other, Sunnata‘s lush melodicism and spaciousness and Yatra‘s crush-your-head riffs coming together for a tour that hits hard and expands your mind at the same time. Cool bill, and I’m honored to have been asked to be among the presenters for it along with Blackskull Services and STB Records. Obviously that was an easy “yes.”

Beginning Oct. 2 in Dresden, the tour will make stops in Oslo, Norway, for Høstsabbat (see you there) as well as at Setalight FestivalDesertfest Belgium and Into the Void as part of an efficient 12-show run that’s over on Oct. 19. There are a few off-days in there, and I don’t know if they’ll be filled in or what, but as Yatra‘s debut European tour and Sunnata‘s kiss-goodbye to their third album, last year’s Outlands (review here), it seems like just the right tour at just the right time. Hard to ask for anything more than that, except perhaps to see it.

So go see it.

Here’s the info:

sunnata yatra tour poster

Doom units Sunnata and Yatra announce fall European tour

It’s a doom takeover! Blackskull Services are happy to present the European fall dates for heavier-than-heavy purveyors SUNNATA and YATRA, to kick off October 2nd in Germany.

SUNNATA declare: “We are writing new material for an upcoming, 4th full length album. We hope to release this in 2020. We want to merge the primal vibe of our latest album ‘Outlands’ with heavier riffage, being an essential part of yet another tribute to void. Feel invited for a journey with us.”

Sunnata performs ritual heavy music. A soulful, trance-inducing journey deep into self. Known from expressive and atmospheric live performances, the Warsaw foursome already took part in various international festivals and been invited to support the likes of Mastodon, Uncle Acid & The Deadbeats, The Sword, Kylesa or Conan, just to name a few. Sunnata explores impermanent nature of sound, full of rapid changes and distortion overdose.

Meanwhile, YATRA add: “We have just completed the recording of a new eight-song album at Developing Nations Recording Studio (of Skeletonwitch, Full of Hell, Pig Destroyer fame) to be released worldwide on STB Records on all formats this year.”

Yatra is a journey into mountainous sound, transcending into the deep forests of primeval times. Born of the ashes of doom band Blood Raven, Yatra emerged to create sound is “darkly spiritual” and includes elements of doom and sludgy riffs, guitar explorations, a heavy rhythm section and black metal style vocals.

SUNNATA & YATRA European tour:
02.10 – Dresden (DE) HD
03.10 – Copenhagen (DK) Stengade
04.10 – Oslo (NO) Hostsabbat Festival
06.10 – Uppsala (SE) Ungdomens Hus
09.10 – Cologne (DE) MTC

16.10 – Munich (DE) Backstage
17.10 – Paris (FR) L’International

The Obelisk Presents: Heavy Mash 2019, Oct. 19 in Arlington, TX

Posted in The Obelisk Presents on July 23rd, 2019 by JJ Koczan

heavy mash frog

With another killer lineup of (mostly) Texan acts, Heavy Mash Fest returns with Heavy Mash 2019 this Oct. 19 at Division Brewing in Arlington, TX. This is the third year of the fest and I’m proud to have presented all three of them, as the reach has grown and the palette continues to expand even as the focus stays on the Lone Star underground, which, fortunately, seems to have an endless array of groups from which to build a lineup. This year, Louisiana’s Forming the Void join the fray, and The Liquid Sound Company — featuring guitarist John Perez of Solitude Aeturnus — will headline, with Destroyer of Light, Funeral Horse and others taking part. Whether you’ve yet been indoctrinated into Smokey Mirror‘s good-time blues psych or not, you’re probably going to want to get in on this one before the rest of Texas shows up and it sells out. It’s gonna be a good show.

Here’s all the info for it, as posted by the fest itself:

HEAVY MASH 2019 POSTER

Heavy Mash 2019

Arlington, TX Heavy Music Festival

In conjunction with Division Brewing in Arlington, TX, we are pleased to announce the 3rd year of this small fest presented by Growl Records, The Obelisk, The Sludgelord, Artificial Head Records, and Death Chicken! It will be held at Division Brewing in Arlington, TX on October 19th from 2pm to midnight-ish. In past years we’ve seen Wo Fat, Duel, Great Electric Quest, Doomstress, Mountain of Smoke, Stone Machine Electric, and many others slay our stage. Below is our full line-up, starting with the headlining act:

The Liquid Sound Company – a psychedelic band formed by doom veteran John Perez in 1996 from Arlington, TX

Destroyer of Light – a melodic doom metal band that pushes those boundaries from Austin, TX

Forming the Void – progressive heavy rock from Lafayette, La

Vorvon – wizard metal from Fort Worth, TX

Funeral Horse – garage metal from Houston, TX

Whep – punk sludge from Denton, TX

Smokey Mirror – heavy psych blues from Dallas, TX

The Grasshopper Lies Heavy – post-metal from San Antonio, TX

Sonar Lights – heavy rock from Fort Worth, TX

C.I. – Instrumental rock for crankhead alcoholic camo-jort-wearing deadbeat dads from White Settlement, TX

For any comments or questions, please contact us at heavymashfest@gmail.com. If you’re in a band, feel free to submit yourselves for next year and beyond.

The Obelisk Presents: Backwoods Payback & Cavern September Tour

Posted in The Obelisk Presents on July 22nd, 2019 by JJ Koczan

cavern

backwoods payback

Easiest conversation I had last week went like this, “Hey man, we’re doing some shows with Cavern, you wanna present the tour?” “Yes. Duh.”

That’s not quite verbatim, but it’s enough to give you the gist anyhow, and when it’s Backwoods Payback doing the asking, the answer’s just about always going to be yes. Even if I hadn’t seen the Pennsylvania/Virginia three-piece last month at Maryland Doom Fest 2019 (review here) and been so thoroughly blown away, they’re reliable the way people think of sunrise as being reliable, and I’m too busy indulging delusions of relevance any time they ask for anything to say no. “Well, if Backwoods think it’s cool, I must be on to something,” and so on.

But lo! There’s intrigue here too, as the Marylanders Cavern will be heading out in their newfangled trio incarnation, having welcomed bassist Rose Heater to the lineup with guitarist/synthesist Zach Harkins and drummer Stephen Schrock and, for the first time, turning not just from a two-piece to a three-piece, but from an instrumental to a vocal-topped outfit as well. In order to “demonstrate their style” — as Madball once put it — Cavern put up the post-rocky, prog-tinged single “Fade Before the Flood” in April. You can hear it streaming down at the bottom of this post. Indeed, it sounds like something I’d want to check out live.

And because any excuse to put it on and I’m happy, I’ve included Backwoods Payback‘s 2018 album, Future Slum (review here), as well. I know you’ve heard me say it a ton of times by now, but if you haven’t given that record its due, the time is now. Quick, before they put out another one!

Genuinely thrilled to be involved here in the small way I am. Go see these bands on this tour:

The Obelisk Presents: Greenleaf Go to Australia This Fall

Posted in The Obelisk Presents on June 14th, 2019 by JJ Koczan

GREENLEAF

This one makes me happy. Australia’s Your Mate Bookings is bringing Greenleaf all the way from Sweden to do a nine-day tour Down Under and this humble site is among the presenters for the run. I’ve been lucky enough to have The Obelisk present some killer shows and tours at this point, but Greenleaf going to Australia? And doing so on the heels of last year’s Hear the Rivers (review here)? Yeah, that’s something special. And if you read the album’s title in that sentence just now and didn’t hear the chorus of the title-track in your head, I’m going to guess you haven’t yet properly dug into the record itself, which I can only heartily suggest you do at the next available moment. Now works. I’ll wait.

The ascension of Greenleaf this decade has been remarkable. From being a Dozer side-project to a full-time band, to a full-time touring band, they’ve lived up to and surpassed what I think most people expected of them, establishing a solidified lineup and embarking on a creative growth that has helped push heavy blues as a whole forward in Europe’s underground. Even as someone who’s never seen their current incarnation, their reputation precedes them, and as they continue to push ahead stylistically and in their chemistry and dynamic, I’m flat-out honored to be involved in presenting this tour in the small way I am, seeing them expand their geographic reach as well.

Tickets are on sale Monday. Go to the show if you can.
