Mojave Experience 2027 Adds Red Fang & 20 Watt Tombstone to Lineup
The more I see, the more I like from Mojave Experience 2027, but I’ll admit that was the case with this year’s inaugural lineup as well. Still, the second edition of the Joshua Tree-based, desert-minded festival is expanding outward in fascinating ways, offering, well, an experience that goes beyond the desert in geographic and stylistic terms while bringing something special from that region/aesthetic as well.
You may have seen yesterday the returning Sasquatch will appear. That’s only good news. The other latest adds to the bill are Portland magnates Red Fang and Wisconsin duo 20 Watt Tombstone, and so far as I know more are still coming. I’m just trying to keep up. That and figure out a way to get there for next March. I guess I’m trying to do two things. No wonder I feel so cripplingly overwhelmed.

Red Fang joins Mojave Experience 2027.
For nearly twenty years they’ve carried their own banner through the heavy underground, forging a sound that’s equal parts power, groove, and grit. Since emerging from Portland in 2005, they’ve built a catalog filled with massive hooks, driving rhythms, and songs that feel just as natural blasting from a van stereo as they do shaking the walls of a packed venue.
Their songs don’t ask for attention. They take hold naturally, settling in and staying there. Loud, unshaken, and unmistakably their own. Through records like Murder the Mountains, Whales and Leeches, and Only Ghosts, Red Fang has carved out a place that belongs entirely to them, earning a devoted following along the way.
Next March, those riffs will roll out across the desert and into the night, finding their place among the dust, the lights, and the gathering that forms each year at Joshua Tree Lake. Red Fang is on the horizon, and the picture keeps coming into focus.
20 Watt Tombstone
Since emerging from Wisconsin more than a decade ago, the duo has built its reputation the old-fashioned way, one show at a time. Their music draws from blues, heavy rock, outlaw country, and punk, but never settles into any one lane for very long. There is a grit to what they do that feels earned rather than manufactured, shaped by years spent on the road and countless nights in small clubs across the country.
Listeners first caught on with Wisco Disco, followed by Death Blues vs. The Dirty Spliff, the strange detour of Year of the Jackalope, and most recently The Chosen Few. Records like these have given 20 Watt Tombstone a loyal following among people who appreciate music that carries some weight behind it. Songs such as “Prophet Man,” “Bomb That Saved the Day,” and “Black Top Sorrow” hit with the kind of conviction that comes from a band comfortable being exactly what it is.
There is something fitting about their sound finding a home in the desert. It has the feeling of movement, of long stretches of highway, distant lights, and the sense that there is always another horizon waiting beyond the next rise.
