Steak Premiere “Luxury Junk”; Touring This Month with All Them Witches
This month, as they inch closer to releasing their yet-untitled new album this Fall as their first outing on Stickman Records, London’s Steak will tour in the UK (plus Hamburg) supporting All Them Witches. “Luxury Junk,” releasing tomorrow and premiering below, is the second single issued as a preface to what will be Steak‘s fourth long-player, following behind “Cometh,” which dropped a month ago and you’ll find near the links at the bottom of this post. As ever, they keep busy. Of course, this coming January, they’ll play Planet Desert Rock Weekend VII in Las Vegas, and they’ll likely have Fall plans before getting there.
Four years ago, Steak unveiled their third LP, Acute Mania (review here), and brought new levels of complexity to their heavy rock foundation. At this point, and particularly with the advent of “Luxury Junk,” they would seem to be selling themselves short in being a “shit kickin’ band” as the PR wire purports below. Acute Mania was a brazen creative step forward, continuing some threads from the band’s work before in their love for and incorporation of hand-drawn graphic novels and animated complements to the music, but digging into their material and developing it at
a level that hadn’t yet been heard from them. Without giving up the vitality that’s always been so crucial to their songs, they grew up.
“Luxury Junk,” which harnesses mood and thrust in kind and caps its six-plus minutes with an expressive vocal reachout from frontman Chris Haley, goes even further. Steak were not the only ones to come out of the pandemic with a record of songs that had clearly been worked on, but the new singles affirm the shift in intention on their part, as well as the revamped dynamic of the band operating as a five-piece with drummer Dean Deal‘s former bandmate in Crystal Head and Magna Saga, Tom Cameron making his first appearance as a member of the band. Cameron featured on Acute Mania in a guest capacity, but joined Steak later in 2022 and has been part of the lineup since on guitar and vocals alongside Haley, guitarist Reece Tee, Deal‘s drums and bassist James Cameron.
I caught this lineup live a couple years ago at Freak Valley Festival (review here) and proceeded to gush about the next-levelry taking place while they were onstage. “Luxury Junk” and “Cometh” manifest this in a studio setting in ways emblematic of both their overarching growth and the change in configuration that’s brought them to their current form. It’s not that they’ve radically transformed themselves or something like that, but in their maturity, they’re realizing the potential that’s been there all along. Given the previews they’ve offered thus far, I can’t wait to hear how that plays out over the full album when the time comes.
Enjoy the premiere below, followed by more from the PR wire:
