Ruff Majik Release Tan Halen EP
“Tan Halen” is the third standalone single South African heavy rockers Ruff Majik have issued since January, preceded by “For the Life of Me” (posted here) and “Can of Wyrms” (posted here), which respectively featured guest appearances from solo artist Dan Patlansky and Slomosa‘s Benjamin Berdous.
The new song finds the four-piece on their own, both continuing to pull away from and advocate against the ‘content-driven’ mindset of social media while at the same time, it has to be said, putting out some righteous algorithmic fare. “Tan Halen” appears in three mixes on what I’ll call an EP because, well, there’s an alternate mix of “For the Life of Me” too, so it’s not just the single and I don’t think anybody frets much about what’s an EP and what isn’t these days. That’s old-man-standing-in-front-of-his-record-shelf shit. Those shelves don’t even exist now.
If you ever needed a ready example for the difference in vibe a mix can make, dig the vocals-forward take on “Tvn Hvlen (Tvpe Mix)” and the garage-ier sound of “Tan Halen (Too Much Fuzz, Not Enough Drums).” All are plenty volatile in their writhing groove, but each also has its own angle, like three middle fingers coming at you, each from a different position.
Probably not gonna get off the internet this weekend, sadly, and I’ve never surfed, but I take the point:
“Surf’s up.
Tan Halen is out now, or whatever we’re supposed to say about it.
Get off the internet and go catch a wave this weekend.”
