The Top 20 of 2016 Year-End Poll is Now Open!

top-20-of-2016-year-end-poll

Welcome to The Obelisk’s Top 20 of 2016 Year-End Poll!

Maximum participation is welcomed and encouraged. By now you know the rules, or if you don’t I’m sure you can guess. Everyone contributes a list of their favorite releases of 2016. I don’t care if it’s an album, EP, single, whatever. Anything that struck your fancy is cool.

All of those picks are rounded up from the form below — it asks for your email just to prove you’re a human being, so please don’t think I’m keeping tabs or selling info or anything like that; I wouldn’t know how even if I wanted to — and will be tabulated at the end of the month. For the last few years, we’ve used a point system wherein a 1-4 ranking is worth five points, 5-8 worth four, 9-12 worth three, 13-16 worth two and 17-20 worth one. Raw votes are of course also counted, and the results from both counts will be posted on New Year’s Day, along with all the lists contributed.

I had a pretty good idea last year what the number one was going to be. What’s 2016’s pick? Not a clue. I’ve got my own list in progress and will be adding it to the poll as well, but I’m dying to see what everyone chooses and what wins out. More than ever it seems there could be multiple options, so if there’s something you feel strongly about, make sure it’s high on your list to get those extra points.

You have my sincere appreciation for contributing your list, and any sharing of the link or commenting or anything else is welcome.

This is meant to be a conversation and a good time, so let’s have at it:

THE POLL IS CLOSED. THANKS TO ALL WHO ENTERED!

Thanks as always to Slevin for his invaluable assistance in putting this poll together, and to you for reading and taking part in this ongoing experiment. Let’s make this the biggest poll yet.

Results out Jan. 1, 2017!

Now you only need to know what was released this year. :)

  2. PALE GREY LORE’s debut came out this year, which JJ graciously reviewed back in September! Listen here: https://palegreylore.bandcamp.com/

  3. Charlie says:

I did this best-of first time last year and to me, it’s turned out to be the best way to review what the year’s been like. I think we can all agree 2016 sucked ten ways to Tuesday and then some, but making my list of all the awesome albums I’ve heard also makes me remember the awesome things I did when I listened to them (like roadtripping along the French coast with my best friend) and I feel a lot better about 2016 and life in general, so thanks JJ, for doing this and doing the Obelisk!

  4. jimg says:

2016 did Not suck! you must not know where to find good music if you think that.

    • Regicide says:

I think he meant the year itself sucked and the great music was the only saving grace. This year started sucking even before it started when Lemmy died.

  5. DugMcF says:

Stoner Sludge band BLOODNUT released Blues From The Red Sons this year on bloodnut.bandcamp.com. Give it a listen…maybe it’ll make your list.

  6. J.T. says:

    Submitted!

  7. J.T. says:

I think it was a good year. I thoroughly enjoyed every album/ep on my list. Deepspacepilots was my numero uno.

Mars Red Sky made my top spot. I hate that I chose a Saturday work cookout over driving up to Chicago to see those guys. Outside of them, I can’t heap enough praise on the new ones from Beelzefuzz, Asteroid, Salem’s Pot, Mountain Dust (where did that one come from!?) and Black Rainbows. Great, GREAT year for tunes. Jacked to see your guys’ lists to see what I missed out on. And just because:

1 Mars Red Sky – Apex III
    2 Asteroid – III
3 Beelzefuzz – The Righteous Bloom
    4 Salem’s Pot – Pronounce This!
    5 Mountain Dust – 9 Years

Nice to see Eternal Champion also.

      • shirtless mike says:

I dug the Deadsmoke and need to dive into the Bus record some more. I’ve had Slow Season on the ipod since it came out but haven’t explored it. Will definitely fire that one up in the cubicle next week and will check out Langfinger (never heard of them before).

        • shirtless mike says:

Really surprised this record is not popping up on more lists. I do realize this was a crowded year but man I cannot get enough of this.

  23. Mr. Fuckit says:

It’s fun to check out bands you guys recommend. Fun ’cause it confirms my theory abt “most ppl having shitty taste in music.” And the fact that ppl waste their time listening to boring shit like Fall of an EMpire or whatever. Fuck that! Listen to Elder instead.
I can’t stand weak ass generic boring “stoner rock”, shit I’ve heard bands do for years, it just sounds washed up and used.
I’ve got nothing against gingers, in fact I LOVE ginger, it’s awesome in drinks aso, but this band from kengaroo-land, Bloodnut, sounds just as boring and shitty as most of these “new” stoner rock/doom bands do. Ppl are free to make whatever music they want, obviously, but naming shit bands on a year end best of list, just proves you are FUCKED in the head. SO many good bands release albums every year, it’s hard to know where to look, but bitch please…Educate yourselves, dig deeper.
Here’s my list. I rest my case.

Graves at Sea, The Curse That Is
    Death Fortress, Deathless March…
    Ripper, Experiment of Existence
Whoredom Rife, The Whorship of Idols..
    Infant Death, Violent Rites
    Temisto, Temisto
    Slabdragger, Rise of the Dawncrusher
    Zaum, Eidolon
    Hashshashin, nihsahshsaH
    Bölzer, Hero
    Nuclear Aggressor, Slow Dismemberment
    Blood Incantation, Starspawn
    Convulsing, Errata
    Crematory Stench, Crematory Stench
    Black Cobra, Imperium Simulacra
    R.I.P. In The Wind
    Cough, Still They Pray
    Cadaveric Fumes, Dimensions Obscure
Arkaik Excruciation, Cursed Blood of Doom
    Gruesome, Dimension Of Horror

I don’t even think I have heard 20 new albums this year…if so…I don’t remember most of them. Ugh.
