Low Flying Hawks Post Video for “Ruins”

Their imagery sure is dark, but the actual sonic output of two-piece post-everything rockers Low Flying Hawks seems far more colorful. The band’s aesthetic seems tied inexorably to black and white, grim vibes, but I think if a video for the track “Ruins” showed up in full-on pinks and oranges and yellows with the song the same as it is now I don’t think anyone would call it incongruous. Same could be said of their forthcoming Magnetic Eye Records debut, Kofuku, which boasts a couple high-profile appearances from around the Melvinsphere — drummer Dale Crover, sometimes-bassist Trevor Dunn and producer Toshi Kasai — but I guess maybe going the opposite route is part of what makes Kufuku stand out from the we’re-gonna-do-MyBloody-Valentine-but-heavy-psych hordes currently shoegazing across the surface of the earth.

Still, shit is severe. The video, which kicks off with festering maggots and dirt packed over the eyes of a dead body — presumably female, but it’s pretty obscure — was directed by Victoria Franco, and hardly gets any brighter from the start, as its protagonist wanders around an anonymous cityscape and winds up in a field with said body, putting bricks on it and pouring blood on dolls as multi-instrumentalists/vocalists EHA and AAL vibe out slow-motion chug and widespread melodic echoes. The track itself is hardly upbeat, but the video’s clear in its intent as a downer, and it plays out that way with an underlying threat of violence (not shown) and what seem to be visual references to films like Pi and The Machinist.

Kofuku is out Feb. 12 on Magnetic Eye. It’s winter. Bum out:

Low Flying Hawks share new video for ‘Ruins’

K?fuku by Low Flying Hawks will be released on 12th February 2016

Working with producer Toshi Kasai (Big Business) at Sounds of Sirens studio in LA, and featuring Trevor Dunn (Mr Bungle, Melvins) and Dale Crover (Melvins, Nirvana) on drums, Low Flying Hawks is a project that consists chiefly of longtime collaborators and enigmatic multi-instrumentalists EHA and AAL.

Album highlight ‘Ruins’ stands tall as a gripping arrangement that merges metal, rock and roll and crawling, corporeal drumming with the lysergic/elegiac mirrors in songwriter EHA’s mind. Whereas prolonged pieces such as ‘Wolves Within Wolves’ and ‘Destruction Complete’ explore profound themes such as loss and rebirth, amid the dramatic hefts in mood and guitar play that switch freely between seismic drone; noise-rock and shoegaze. All of which make K?fuku a remarkably moving experience.
