Baklavaa Post New Track “Ointment”; Debut Album Dane On Due in March on Grimoire

Baltimore noisemakers Baklavaa have one song streaming now, but their debut long-player, Dane On, has more to its proto-grunge crunch, deceptive melody and who-the-hell-knows-what’s-about-to-happen vibe than a single track can really summarize. The 12 tracks are adventurous and fuzzy in kind, youthfully urgent but likewise calculated for maximum fuckery as the noise/drone of “IV” leads to the raw Converge-ance of “Tampered With.” Later, “R. Plastic” melds noodleprog with post-Sonic Youth freneticism and while I wouldn’t actually bet any of the above are an influence on the band, it doesn’t matter, because they come out sounding like themselves anyway.

Get yourself informed, then get yourself a taste, then wait to hear the rest because it’s a head-smasher:

Baklavaa unveil new track and details from Dane On.

Twisted noise-rock explorers Baklavaa from Baltimore, MD are proud to announce the details of their first full-length effort. Their magnum opus entitled Dane On, aimed squarely at fans of Unwound, Shellac and The Jesus Lizard, is due for release in March on Grimoire Records.

The track demonstrates the album’s sheer diversity, from angular yet catchy noise rock hooks, to meandering excursions reminiscent of Slint. Juxtaposition of dynamic extremes is a main theme on this record. The schizophrenic vocals mumble softly, then howl in desperation. Jagged, dissonant guitars interlock with spastic drum work while the massive, growling bass anchors the songs at every moment. Even in their ambient moments featuring noise courtesy of Angel Marcloid, there is constant tension and a feeling of unease.

Noel from Grimoire Records comments, “Working with these guys (and girl) was an amazing experience. I met Ted while recording his other band, Alone Time, in the spring of 2015 and was mesmerized by his unconventional, angular guitar sounds. He told me about his main band, Baklavaa, that they were looking to record their first full-length, a collection of songs they had been working on since 2012. We started recording in June and continued tracking through the summer in a friend’s garage. Despite the raw, live energy we captured in that garage, It turned out almost like a concept album, with seamless transitions between every song, and carefully-placed ambience. The artwork and liner notes feature a neurotic blend of lettering, scanned from the band’s own handwriting. Musically, this is the longest and most involved production I’ve ever been a part of. Almost the polar opposite of the Alone Time EP that started our relationship, which was finished in a matter of days.”
