Greenleaf Post Video for “A Million Fireflies”
I’m not even gonna do that thing where an album’s not coming out for a while yet and so I pretend I haven’t heard it — the new Greenleaf record fucking smokes. Holy crap it’s good. After the reset that was 2014’s Trails and Passes (review here), the Swedish four-piece come back swinging on Rise Above the Meadow, their sixth full-length and first for Napalm Records. The songs, of course, were going to be there, but the energy they bring to a song like “A Million Fireflies,” the depth of arrangement and the sense of movement within the tracks — sometimes you hear a record for the first time and just know it’s going to be in your head for years to come.
“A Million Fireflies,” incidentally, is the opener of the album. It’s a little more atmospheric than some of the more driving moments Rise Above the Meadow has on offer, but it’s still catchy and heavy in kind, and does well to represent the entirety of the work. As for the video, it seems to take frontman Arvid Johnsson on a magical whirlwind of rocking stages, portajohns and load-ins — tour life, in other words. Then, as guitarist Tommi Holappa, bassist Johan Rockner and drummer Sebastian Olsson get down to some more psyched out business, a painted dancing lady kind of shows up out of nowhere. Take that, expectation.
Greenleaf are on tour in Europe right now with Clutch, and before Rise Above the Meadow is released on Feb. 26, they will have also hit the road alongside labelmates My Sleeping Karma for the next installment of Sound of Liberation‘s Up in Smoke Roadfestival.
