Asteroid Interview with Robin Hirse: Resolidifying the Molten

Posted in Features on November 27th, 2015 by JJ Koczan

asteroid 1

Let the speculation end: Asteroid are back together. New material is in progress for a 2016 release and they’ll hope to tour next year as well.

The Swedish heavy psych rockers ended on a fade after Move a Mountain/One Foot in the Grave (review here), a final 7″ single that followed what remains one of the finest fuzz-jam releases of this decade, 2010’s II (review here), and about two months ago, the Örebro-based trio of guitarist/vocalist Robin Hirse, bassist/vocalist Johannes Nilsson and drummer Elvis Campbell began to tease the prospect of a resurgence via social media, posting on Thee Facebooks vague notes like “Is there anybody out there..?” and photos of setlists, and so on.

This week, news came of their first-announced show as a reunited band, which will be Feb. 27 in Athens, Greece, supporting the inaugural European tour for All Them Witches, and today I’m pleased to bring confirmation that will be the first of hopefully many to come. Five years after II basked in warm tones and the ultra-natural chemistry of HirseNilsson and Campbell on tracks like “Edge,” “Garden,” “Towers,” “River” — hell, all of them — Asteroid have begun work on a follow-up. Whether that will be a full album or something else by the time it comes out, it’s early to say, but when Asteroid start jamming, good things happen. They’ve got one new song done and more taking shape.

Fuzzorama Records — the label helmed by fellow Örebro fuzz specialists Truckfighters — released II and the 2007 self-titled Asteroid debut (discussed here), may or may not continue to handle their work when the time comes. In 2012, the band signed to Small Stone on a deal that ultimately fell through, so it’s entirely possible they could wind up working with their neighbors again or with someone else. Maybe that’s putting the cart before the horse, but it’s easy to be excited about the prospect of a third Asteroid LP, both because the second was such a landmark and because it showed so much potential for them to move even farther forward, and I’m thrilled to be able to bring you the first interview they’ve done to confirm the reunion is taking place.

It’s a quick Q&A and it follows here. Please enjoy:

asteroid 3

Alright, let’s do this. Take me through the story of getting Asteroid back together. How did it happen? Was it always going to happen? Was it never going to happen? What came together that allowed a reunion to take place?

Yep, let’s get to it. First off, we never said: “This is it, it’s over!” So there was always a chance that it was going to happen. Even more likely than not. We’ve been good friends all along so there were no burnt bridges or anything like that. One day I just called up the guys and asked them over for coffee and said something like, “So, what do you think, do you wanna give it another go?” And they said, “Yes of course.” I think the thought had crossed our separate mind at least a thousand times since we “parted ways.”

Tell me about bringing Elvis back into the lineup on drums.

Well, let me put it like this: No matter how many drummer we’ve had, Elvis is the drummer of Asteroid. He’s always been. When he joined we found our sound, our real groove asteroid 2smile. Henke [Jannson] was with us for a lot of shows and on the 7” and we love him dearly and we had Martin [Ström] in the beginning, on the split with Blowback and on the debut album. But as I said, the three of us playing together make the magic that is Asteroid. Nothing else even comes close.

What led to the breakup/hiatus in the first place?

We were just tired… Tired of sitting in that tour bus mile after mile, tired of each other, tired of all the long nights and the endless party. Don’t get me wrong, we love playing live, but it takes a toll on you. The last tour we did before the break (which was with Elvis, by the way) was really hard on all of us, mentally and physically.

It all gets very personal and close when you’ve been a band for as long as we have. And since we hang out in private too it felt like a break was the right thing to do. And that gave us time to get our heads straight and rest our souls a bit.

How did it feel to pick up your gear and jam Asteroid songs again together for the first time? Where was the rehearsal and how did it happen?

Like coming back home, I guess that would probably be the best way to describe it. Like things were beginning to fall back in to place… Honest and true, like music is supposed to feel. It was such an awesome feeling! But I won’t lie, it was a bit harder, and it took some getting used to after all that time. But after the second rehearsal the muscles began to remember the motions and our vibe began to return for real. Great fun to say the least!

We know almost all the bands in our hometown, so getting a place to test our wings wasn’t hard. And a couple of weeks ago we found a nice rehearsal space that we’ve been getting in order with all our lovely gear and all our lava lamps and Persian rugs.

Have you started to write new material? Will you work on a new album first or something else?

We had some song ideas, maybe three or four, that we began writing before the “vacation,” that we’ve started putting together now and I actually think we finished the first, an all-new one, yesterday [Nov. 25]. But you never know, we may change some things around. It’s got kind of a groovy “Zeppelin”-vibe to it… We really dig it! As for the rest of the “buried treasures,” they most certainly sound like Asteroid. Spacious, trippy, soft and heavy as hell! So as soon as we got some more song that we are happy with done, an album will be recorded. Or an EP, or a 7” or a double album… We’ll see how it goes, but we promise that new music will be released sometime next year!

It’s been five years since the second album came out. How do you feel Asteroid’s sound will progress moving forward?

I think we’ll continue to do what we’ve always done: Write stuff that we would want to listen to ourselves. asteroid-nya-latenAnd since that can be anything from soft jazz and strange whale sounds to crazy black metal from the deepest woods of Norway, anything can happen. We never ever strive to write an “Asteroid song” it’s more like all the songs we write become “Asteroid songs” because of the three of us and what we individually and collectively bring to them.

Fuzzorama reissued II last year. What do you think it is about that record that resonated so much with listeners?

I personally think people can tell when something comes from the heart. It’s heavy and fuzzy mixed with raw and fragile… We’ve always been very proud of that album, but we had no idea that it would have an impact on as many people as it has. And that’s what makes you the most proud. That just goes to show what music can do!
But it’s still weird when you think about the fact that at least one or two of those riffs or lyrics were written while I was sitting on the toilet. It’s a good place to think, you know.

You’ll be playing with All Them Witches in Athens, Greece, on Feb. 27. What else is in the works for shows? Will you tour?

That’s gonna be great fun! I really like their style. And it’s gonna be nice to meet Elina [Kemanidi, show promoter] at last. She puts on a lot of great shows there and we’re looking forward to finally seeing one.

Sadly nothing else can be said right now about what has been booked for the next year, but it’s going to be a fun year that’s for sure! We’ve got our No. 1 Dude working around the clock, so yes, we will be touring in 2016.

Any other plans or closing words you want to mention?

Well with everything that is happening all around the world right now it would be great if everyone could just try to remember that we are ALL in this together.

And of course: Long live love, fuzz and hard rock… and all that is good!

Greenleaf Releasing Rise Above the Meadow Feb. 26; Preorders Available Now

Posted in Whathaveyou on November 27th, 2015 by JJ Koczan

greenleaf

Swedish heavy rockers Greenleaf will issue their sixth album, Rise Above the Meadow, on Feb. 26, and of all the albums being released in the early part of next year, it stands among the most intriguing. The long-running-but-recently-more-actively-touring outfit issued their fifth outing, Trails and Passes (review here), in 2014 via Small Stone, and in addition to being their debut on Napalm Records, Rise Above the Meadow‘s quick turnaround time of two years will match the shortest of the band’s career, which taken in context with all the touring they’ve done this year and will continue to do up to and through the new record’s release — they’re on the road with Clutch next month and with labelmates My Sleeping Karma and Mammoth Mammoth after that (info here) — only emphasizes how much of a full-time act they’ve become.

Add to that that this will be their first album without Bengt Bäcke on bass, who along with guitarist Tommi Holappa was for years a calm center in a tempest of lineup changes, and their second with vocalist Arvid Jonsson, and the potential for development in a group dynamic is many-layered. Fortunately they’re beginning from one of heavy rock and roll’s most reliable starting points, which is Holappa‘s songwriting.

Cover art for this one is by Sebastian Jerke, who seems to have become something of an in-house presence for Napalm (and deservedly so), also doing choice 2015 covers for Ahab and My Sleeping Karma. Album particulars and preorder links follow:

Heliotropes Sign to The End Records; New Album Due in Spring

Posted in Whathaveyou on November 25th, 2015 by JJ Koczan

Psychedelic rockers Heliotropes — now, but not always, a four-piece — have signed a deal to release their sophomore full-length through The End Records in Spring 2016. Led by vocalist/songwriter Jessica Numsuwankijkul, the band made their debut in 2013 with A Constant Sea, and though the specifics are few and far between for the follow-up, the band shared the stage earlier this month with Matt and Kim at Music Hall of Williamsburg and they’ll open for Rob Crow in March. Maybe they can convince him to do another Goblin Cock record. That’d be spiffy.

Speaking of spiffy, If you didn’t hear it, A Constant Sea was right on. It’s streaming below, after the announcement from the PR wire:

heliotropes-(Photo-by-Son-Le)

Brooklyn Psych-Rockers HELIOTROPES Sign To THE END RECORDS!

Brooklyn-based genre-benders Heliotropes have officially signed with The End Records for the release of their upcoming full-length studio album, set for release Spring 2016.

Heliotropes combine sludgy metal guitar tones, introspective shoegaze interludes, psychedelic drone, and atmospheric harmonies to create a sound that’s as equally hard to pin down as it is alluring.

Heliotropes is comprised of founding member/songwriter/vocalist Jessica Numsuwankijkul, along with a rotating cast of collaborators, including drummer Cici Harrison, bassist Richard Thomas, and guitarist Ricci Swift, who are all featured on the band’s upcoming album.

The band’s first recorded offering came with 2012’s Ribbons 7”, followed the next year by their debut LP entitled A Constant Sea, which was named by Mother Jones as one of the 10 Best Albums Of 2013. Since then, the band has performed on the road with Esben And The Witch and toured nationally with stops at South By Southwest, Firefly and Culture Collide, sharing the stage with a far-reaching variety of bands including Thurston Moore, The Geto Boys, Matt and Kim, Kurt Vile, Parquet Courts, The Black Angels and The Raveonettes.

Says Jessica, “I’m very excited to release our upcoming album. We’ve been working on it for a while now and we’re very pleased to work with The End, who are gracious enough to remind us to do normal stuff like make album artwork.”

ASG Post New Video for “Mourning of the Earth”

Posted in Bootleg Theater on November 25th, 2015 by JJ Koczan

asg

I’m not really sure what might prompt North Carolinian heavy rock four-piece ASG to make a new video now, more than two years after the release of their latest album, Blood Drive, also their debut on Relapse Records, but if I had to take a guess, they had the footage and decided to use it. Sad to say, I’m not familiar enough with the Wilmington area to know definitively where their newly-premiered clip for “Mourning of the Earth” was filmed, but if it’s Ziggy’s by the Sea, then it would be the same locale where the band captured “Scrappy’s Trip” from the same album, though that seems to have been set to the studio version of the song, whereas this is live video and audio.

Maybe ASG have a new record in the works and are looking to get a little momentum going and say goodbye to Blood Drive before they enter the release/touring cycle anew — and with them, there’s little doubt it’d be a substantial cycle indeed — but whatever it is, I’m little inclined to argue. The massive response Blood Drive garnered was neither happenstance nor the result of anything other than a quality songwriting process and years of hard work put in, and if “Mourning of the Earth” is their way of reminding people of that fact before they bring something new to the table next year, then right on. Hell, even if they haven’t been writing or recording, I don’t think they’ll meet with too many complaints, even this far out from the last release.

Rocka. Also rolla:

ASG, “Mourning of the Earth”

North Carolina stoner rockers ASG have shared a new music video via Vevo for their track “Mourning Of The Earth,” taken from the 2013 release Blood Drive. Directed by Jason Lynn, the video is taken from one of ASG’s recent live performances in their their hometown of Wilmington, NC earlier this year, and features the band tearing through the ripping, riff-laden stoner metal anthem.

In late 2011, Relapse Records announced the signing of North Carolina’s finest psychedelic, stoner-punks. ASG entered the studio in February 2012 to record their highly anticipated Relapse debut with producer Matt Hyde (Slayer, Children of Bodom, Fu Manchu). After a string of U.S. dates with Corrosion of Conformity and label-mates Royal Thunder in early 2013, the group delivered their fourth full length Blood Drive on May 28th, 2013. A 12-song collection of sun-soaked anthems full of groove heavy riffs that reference equally Torche and Queens of the Stone Age, Blood Drive has garnered near-universal critical acclaim since its release.

Black Cobra Announce Feb. 26 Release for Imperium Simulacra

Posted in Whathaveyou on November 25th, 2015 by JJ Koczan

black cobra

There are two ways to approach the prospect of a new Black Cobra record. One is an exclamatory “Fuck yes!” followed by the boarding up of windows, the shoring up of foundations and whatever necessary domicile improvements you might make so that when you finally get your hands on such a thing and play it at the appropriate volume it doesn’t actually destroy the place you live, and the other is, “What’s ‘heavy’?” in which case you’ll probably want to gurd your loins before being introduced. Either way you go, confirmation of a Feb. 26 release for Black Cobra‘s awaited fifth long-player is only good news. If the hatches need battening down, we can get to that later.

Word of Imperium Simulacra comes just days after the two-piece finished a tour with YOB after wrecking their van as they’ve wrecked so many hearts and minds in their nigh on 15 years together, and it brings the first audio from the offering as well in the opening track, “Challenger Deep,” which can be found under the art, PR wire info and links that follow here:

BLACK COBRA announce new album, stream new track

Critically-acclaimed metal duo BLACK COBRA have released new details of their forthcoming album ‘Imperium Simulacra’. The album will see an international release through Season of Mist on Feb. 26 across several CD, LP, and cassette formats.

BLACK COBRA have also released the first track taken from ‘Imperium Simulacra’.

Regarding “Challenger Deep” the band comments, “The song refers to the deepest measured point in the ocean. It’s loosely inspired by the film “Warm Gods of the Deep” as well as our fascination with the extremes of the natural world. We’re very excited to present you with the newest offering from our sonic bestiary. Enjoy.”

I put up a podcast last year on the day before Thanksgiving as well. At least I’m consistent. In the US, today is the biggest travel day of the year, and I continue to feel like there are few things better in this universe than hitting the road accompanied by good music. Whether you’re driving alone on your way to see family for the holiday, commuting to work (that one doesn’t necessarily have to be by car, I suppose), going to stand on line for some silly discount item or whatever it might be, I hope you find something here you consider worth bringing along for the trip.

The holidays are always a pretty stressful time — when isn’t? — so once it gets past the initial burst of heft from Tombstones, this one stays pretty mellow for the most part. Deville and Kind rock pretty hard, but once it moves into the Dirty Streets and Old Man Lizard and so on, it’s more nod than headbang, which is accurate to where my brain is at. Looking for something chill in the face of miles to cover and meals to consume. If you’re in the US, a very Happy Thanksgiving to you and yours, and if not, I hope you enjoy just the same.

Track details follow:

First Hour:
0:00:00 Isaak, “Fountainhead” from Sermonize
0:03:58 Tombstones, “Pyre of the Cloth” from Vargariis
0:13:30 Hound, “Over the Edge,” from Out of Space
0:17:44 Deville, “Mind on Hold” from Make it Belong to Us
0:21:17 Kind, “German for Lucy” from Rocket Science
0:28:26 Dirty Streets, “Save Me” from White Horse
0:31:55 Old Man Lizard, “Craniopagus Paraciticus” from Old Man Lizard
0:40:43 Across Tundras, “No Roads in any Direction” from Home Free
0:46:52 Niche, “On Down the Line” from Heading East
0:52:11 Wired Mind, “Road” from Mindstate: Dreamscape

Second Hour:
1:03:07 Seedy Jeezus, “Echoes in the Sky” from Echoes in the Sky
1:19:03 Dorre, “One Collapsed at the Altar” from One Collapsed at the Altar

Total running time: 1:49:21

Thank you for listening.

All Them Witches Announce European Tour

Posted in Whathaveyou on November 25th, 2015 by JJ Koczan

It was what, two days ago, that the prospect of an All Them Witches inaugural incursion to Europe was being discussed? Yup, two days. I looked. Well, it was pretty clear than that it was going to happen, the only question was when. Announced today: Feb. 24 to March 13. There you go.

They’ll be going, of course, in support of this year’s Dying Surfer Meets His Maker (review here), the band’s third album and first for New West Records, and I have no doubt they’ll be greeted as liberators. By the time they get across the Atlantic, they’ll have gone coast-to-coast in the US already this fall and winter, on an extensive run set to kick off on Saturday with just a couple weeks dividing it for the holidays.

All the dates follow. There are many of them:

Roadburn 2016: Black Mountain Added to Lineup

Posted in Whathaveyou on November 25th, 2015 by JJ Koczan

Canadian psych rockers Black Mountain released a soundtrack in 2012, and earlier this year they oversaw a 10th anniversary reissue of their 2005 self-titled debut, but it’s been five years since Wilderness Heart, their last proper studio LP, came out in 2010. That’s probably long enough. Whether or not they’ll have something in the works or done by the time they get to Roadburn 2016 in April, I won’t speculate, I’m just pointing out numbers. They headlined the Afterburner in 2011, so it won’t be their first time making the trip, but I can’t help but wonder if they won’t have more news to come in the New Year.

Roadburn 2016 has been adding bands in batches so far — see here and here and here and here and here — and, granted, some of those batches have varied in size, but Black Mountain are the first standalone announcement the Netherlands-based fest has made. Not a bad distinction to have:

Canadian Psychedelic Rockers Black Mountain Set To Return To Roadburn Festival

Five years after headlining the Afterburner, acclaimed Canadian psychedelic rock masters Black Mountain will return to Tilburg, The Netherlands to perform at Roadburn 2016 at the 013 venue on Thursday April 14.

With three full-length albums, a soundtrack album, and a host of EPs, the Vancouver band, led by guitarist / singer Stephen McBean, quickly became one of the most critically praised bands of the 2000s. Bridging the heavy rock of Blue Cheer and Led Zeppelin with the more abstract sounds of the Velvet Underground and Hawkwind, 2005’s Black Mountain and 2008’s In the Future cemented Black Mountain’s status as leaders of a new generation of rock bands embracing vintage sounds, and have since spawned countless imitators. Critics and audiences have responded in kind, as In the Future and 2010’s Wilderness Heart were both nominated for Canada’s prestigious Polaris Music Prize.

“Roadburn is the teenage wet dream for heavy metal outcasts,” says McBean, who is elated to return. “The people, the party and of course, the riffs! Black Mountain can’t wait to turn up, turn on and get down with some future right on. Thank you for all the years of face melting!”

Roadburn Festival takes place between 14 – 17 April 2016 at the 013 venue, in Tilburg, The Netherlands. Tickets are on sale!
