BLACK SABBATH: New Album Title Announced; Recording Drummer Revealed - Jan. 12, 2013

BLACK SABBATH has set "13" as the title of its new album. The group's first album with Ozzy Osbourne since 1978 will be released in June via Vertigo/Universal Republic in the U.S. and Vertigo in all other territories. The drum tracks on the CD were laid down by RAGE AGAINST THE MACHINE sticksman Brad Wilk following original drummer Bill Ward's decision to bow out of the reunion due to a contractual dispute with the rest of the group.

Osbourne, Tony Iommi (guitar) and Geezer Butler (bass) recorded the album primarily in Los Angeles with producer Rick Rubin.

In advance of the album's release, BLACK SABBATH will head to New Zealand, Australia and Japan for live performances. Additional tour plans will be revealed in the coming months.

As previously reported, BLACK SABBATH took part in a photo shoot on November 30, 2012 with famed British photographer/artist Sam Taylor-Wood.

Iommi clarified the status of the band's new CD in an October interview with "The Blairing Out With Eric Blair Show". Although it has been reported that the band has recorded 15 songs, Iommi explained, "That's wrong . . . We've written 15 songs and we've played them all. But now, at the moment, we're recording them. We recorded them at my house first, in England, just as demos, but now we're doing them for real. So we're about six tracks in now, at the moment."

Asked if there is any chance of Ward rejoining the band, Iommi said, "We'll always have a heart for Bill, but I think it's gone past that now, because it's gone on so long that I don't see that happening at the moment. Maybe at some point we might [play together again]."

The drumming decision is out of left field. Wish they'd continued with Appice, a nice heavy, doomy sound like 'The Devil You Know'.

I'll check it out, but my hopes aren't overly high.

Not really THAT out of left field. Rick Rubin is producing. Rubin produced the last Rage album...and was quickly the guy who said "hey other three Rage guys....you should form a band with Chris Cornell."

Rubin is such a mastermind in creating good records (not records that everyone will like per se). The Heartbreakers (Tom Petty's) are all over Johnny Cash, Donovan, Dixie Chicks, Neil Diamond, etc albums...Whatever we think about Tom Petty's music...we all know they are incredible musicians. He's a weird mastermind of taking musicians that you would never think about working together and just making it happen. Rubin is the guy who thought having Glenn Danzig write a song for Johnny Cash was a brilliant idea.

I'm sure Rubin said "oh...Bill's out...well I know some good rock drummers that don't really have a band right now..."

I'm not gonna soil myself over this, but I will put a smidgen of faith into it. This is about as close to the original line-up as we'll get.

Not the most flattering picture of Ozzy... Oh well.

I will buy this because I'm a completionist. Hopefully it will be decent.

The drummer decision is actually a good one - had to mull it over for a bit. But of all of the drummers out there, Brad does know how to groove better than most and that is really what Sabbath needs. That early groove along with the amazing riffs is what snagged me at an early age. I am a huge fan of Vinnie and even know him, but I think his style works best with a heavier, more metal and full on doom approach (which is always a good thing of course). And the new Kill Devil Hill they are working on is gonna blow your minds so I'm happy he is there at the moment. I think this is an indication that they are trying to capture some of that early magic with some groove and jazzy/blues laced sections in the songs.
