Throneless Sign to Black Bow Records; Cycles Coming March 23

Posted in Whathaveyou on November 13th, 2017 by JJ Koczan

For a band like Malmö, Sweden’s Throneless, who roll out huge-sounding, lumbering grooves in longform and pummeling fashion with a lysergic underflourish and cavernous crash, one can imagine few direct endorsements that might carry the weight as that of Jon Davis, guitarist/vocalist of UK crusher-destroyers Conan. Davis has signed the three-piece to his Black Bow Records imprint for the release of their second offering, Cycles, which will be out on March 23, 2018. As in five months from now. Hey, I like an early heads up as much as the next guy. Probably more, actually, since that’s about as long as it takes me to review shit sometimes.

I digress. The band made their self-titled debut in 2015 via Heavy Psych Sounds, and it’s worth noting they’re not really out of place on either label. Still, from the quote below it’s pretty plain they’re stoked to be working with Black Bow, and yeah, they should be. That record was also four songs of mega-stomping doom, so it’s nice to see they’re keeping to form with the new one. Not that I’ve heard it yet or anything, but it’s bludgeoning.

Throneless – Cycles

On March 23rd 2018 Black Bow Records will release Cycles by Swedish doom metal band THRONELESS. The album is four tracks of psychedelic doom metal that is highly recommended for fans of Conan, Yob and The Slomatics.

The album is set to be released on limited edition vinyl and digital formats.

The band commented, “We’re stoked to release our second album on Black Bow Records, and getting the opportunity to work with people who totally understand the type of music and expression we stand for.”

Throneless is a doom metal band from Malmö, Sweden, that through heavy downtuned fuzz, monotone and medative riffs focuses on waking people up from the masshypnosis we call society.

Heavy Psych Sounds Fest Vol. 2 Lineup Announced

Posted in Whathaveyou on October 16th, 2015 by JJ Koczan

If so inclined, one could probably find an update for every day of the week from Italian imprint Heavy Psych Sounds, which between its label and booking ends is helping to establish Italy as a major player in the European heavy rock underground — or at very least bring attention to the country’s contributions to same — but frankly it’s impossible to keep up with it all. Nonetheless, as Gabriele Fiori — also of Black Rainbows and Killer Boogie, as if he didn’t already have enough going on — brings together the lineup for the second edition of the Heavy Psych Sounds Fest, it’s hard not to admire the expanding scope of the project as a whole, one thing feeding into the next as it becomes a sustainable and growing whole.

With Ufomammut and Fiori‘s own Killer Boogie at the top, the Heavy Psych Sounds Fest Vol. 2 has announced its initial round of bands with the promise of more to come. I’m looking forward to seeing just how big this thing gets:

The first acts have been announced for Italy’s heavy music event HEAVY PSYCH SOUNDS FEST, with Ufomammut, Killer Boogie, Isaak, Throneless, Sgt Sunshine, Oak and Tons. A mouthwatering lineup that will be hosted in Roma’s famous venue Traffic Live this December.

December 11th & 12th at Traffic Live (Roma, Italy)
Weekend & day tickets available soon

…and more bands to be announced soon.

Hosted by Italian rock’n’heavy music label and booking agency Heavy Psych Sounds (Black Rainbows, Fatso Jetson, Karma To Burn, White Hills, Mos Generator…), the second edition of HPS FEST VOL.2 will once again bring the heaviest riffs to the peninsula for two days of doom, stoner and psych partying, with both established bands and newcomers from the HPS roster.

Throneless Announce Oct. 30 Release for Self-Titled Debut

Posted in Whathaveyou on September 2nd, 2015 by JJ Koczan

It won’t take long into the stream below of “Masters of Nothing” to figure out what Swedish three-piece Throneless are all about. Big riffs, big nod, big doom. The PR wire info below is right to list Ufomammut and Conan among the “FFO” types, but maybe I’d put Monolord in that list as well, if only for a fitting summary. Either way, Throneless bring something different to Italian imprint Heavy Psych Sounds, as they’re a long, long way down a deep, dark hole away from most of what the label specializes in producing — groups like Black RainbowsKiller BoogieApe Skull, and so on — but listening to “Masters of Nothing,” it’s kind of hard to argue with what Throneless are up to. The sore-necked results speak for themselves.

The band made a quick statement about releasing their first album, a self-titled, through Heavy Psych Sounds. I’ve no clue if “Masters of Nothing” will show up on the record as well, but it’s here as a sonic reference in any case.

From the PR wire:

Throneless debut album out 30.10.2015

FOR FANS OF: Conan, Bongripper, YOB, Ufomammut.

Throneless is a doom metal band from Malmö, Sweden, that through heavy downtuned fuzz, monotone and medative riffs focuses on waking people up from the masshypnosis we call society.

“We adapt our minds to someone else’s vision of a life, that clearly doesn’t benefit anyone but the ones on top of the pyramid. And since we’re taught that this is the only way of living, kicking downwards and licking upwards, we waste our golden years at some worthless job, to save up some worthless money and buy amplifiers so that we can express how much we fucking hate everything.”

In April 2015 after hours of jamming, Throneless recorded and produced 4 tracks that turned into their self titled debut album.

Throneless have signed with Heavy Psych Sounds for the physical release on CD & LP in October 2015.
