Høstsabbat 2023 Adds Shaman Elephant to Lineup

Posted in Whathaveyou on March 31st, 2023 by JJ Koczan

Those keeping track of such things might note that Shaman Elephant are the band with whom Enslaved collaborated for ‘The Otherworldly Big Band Experience,’ which in every respect lived up to its billing. The band released their latest LP, Wide Awake but Still Asleep, in 2020 and bring proggy presence to the bill of Høstsabbat 2023. I’m not certain what stage they’re playing on, or if they’ve got a new record coming or what, but as the weekly confirmations from the Oslo-based festival continue to roll out in advance of the 10th anniversary edition, sonic breadth seems to be the order of the day, and that’s that much better since this may just be the most ambitious Høstsabbat yet, not only in terms of the styles of the acts playing, but also the further realization of the established ethic of showcasing artists from Norway’s equal parts vibrant and varied underground. Shaman Elephant, in contributing to that and becoming part of the shape of the festival overall, are for sure something to look forward to.

From the fest:

HØSTSABBAT 2023 – Shaman Elephant (NO)

The band of the day on this beautiful Friday is a collective hailing from western Norway. Not the easiest band to describe, but very easy to love.

Our west coast has had a thriving prog and psychedelic rock scene for ages, giving and SHAMAN ELEPHANT is carrying that torch with a sound lusher than the fjords themselves.
It´s so captivating and enchanting. Bands like this also come with some sort of relief: Rock is far from dead.

SHAMAN ELEPHANT is as organic as it gets, keeping us focused and alert with a clever progressiveness at all times. Their sound is firmly rooted in the 60´s & 70´s era of their niche, but they are also able to add some kind of modern touch to everything, making them a band for the future rather than the past.

We cant wait to dive into their universe in October.

Please welcome Shaman Elephant to Høstsabbat 2023.

Sonic Whip 2023 Completes Lineup; Shaman Elephant, Samavayo, Vinnum Sabbathi & The Psychotic Monks Added

Posted in Whathaveyou on February 22nd, 2023 by JJ Koczan

Don’t mind me, just over here daydreaming about this one. Yeah, maybe I’ll always be something of a sucker for The Netherlands in Springtime, but even taking that into account, the lineup for Sonic Whip 2023 in Nijmegen speaks for itself top to bottom in terms of the bill. There’s a couple bands I don’t know — including The Psychotic Monks, who were just added, and Shaman Elephant, who were the other band that took part in Enslaved‘s big-band collab — but for familiar names and faces and acts I’ve never seen like Stoned JesusCausa SuiSomali Yacht ClubSamavayoVinnum SabbathiSlift, and so on, I feel like this is two days I very much wouldn’t mind living through.

I feel that way about a lot of European fests these days, and maybe that in itself is worth examining — if perhaps we’re in something of a golden age (a loaded phrase for the Dutch) of smaller-scale festivals across the continent. I see nothing but arguments in favor of that proposition here, and post-covid, the explosion of events both new and returning is only welcome as far as I’m concerned. I haven’t been invited, won’t get over for it, but it’s a good one, and if you’re headed out to it, I tip my hat in your general direction. Or at least I will next time I have a hat on.

Final announcement follows. Tickets are on sale:

Shaman Elephant to Release Debut LP Crystals Dec. 9

Posted in Whathaveyou on November 10th, 2016 by JJ Koczan

Winding and classically-minded progressive heavy rockers Shaman Elephant — about whom I’d probably be writing based on their moniker alone even if their 2015 More EP, streaming below, didn’t have me intrigued — will release their debut album, Crystals, on Dec. 9 through Karisma Records. Hailing from Bergen, Norway, the band has touches of retro stylizations, as the EP demonstrates, but freely kick into stretches of frenetic semi-krautrock energy of the sort that make you wonder how they manage to hold it all together. Presumably they do, because, you know, the album exists and whatnot. So — spoiler alert. But getting there is the fun part of the journey, so if you don’t know the band, feel free to dig in below.

Karisma Records: SHAMAN ELEPHANT New Album “Crystals”!

Release Date: 09/12/2016

The thriving Rock and Prog scene around Bergen, Norway, has already seen the emergence of bands like Seven Impale, Tiebreaker, D’accorD and Ossicles, and the newest addition to this burgeoning scene is Shaman Elephant. Over the past few years, the four piece has been drawing bigger and bigger crowds in their home town, and, after releasing the digital EP “More” in 2015 they were snapped up by Karisma Records.

The band’s sound is firmly grounded in the late 60’s and early 70’s psychedelic and progressive Proto Hard Rock style, but mixed with a modern touch. With a great groove provided by drummer Jard Hole (also in the band Línt) and Ole-Andreas Jensen on bass, they form the backbone for keyboardist Jonas Særsten and guitarist and vocalist Eirik Sejersted Vognstølen. Shaman Elephant’s debut Crystals shows great variation within the more progressive and psychedelic sounds of the past, with songs veering towards drug induced fantasies. They entered the Solslottet Studio in the spring of 2016 with producer Iver Sandøy (producer of Enslaved, Krakow, Seven Impale), and the result is amazing! Crystals is a gem for any music fan with their heart in the 70’s.
