Against the Grain Post “Here to Stay” Video; Tour with Speedealer and Mothership Starts Tomorrow

against the grain

Tomorrow night, Detroit bruisers Against the Grain head out on a tour alongside Mothership and the resurgent Speedealer. The heavy rockers continue to live up to the ethic set forth with 2015’s Road Warriors (review here), by doing more than simply putting in time on the road, instead seeming to take a step forward with each subsequent tour. Over the last two-plus years, they’ve been out with Lo-Pan, The Atomic Bitchwax, Bongzilla, Black Cobra and others. I’ve yet to hear a complaint from anyone who’s been fortunate enough to see them play.

Given the significant amount of touring, maybe it’s not such a surprise that Against the Grain‘s new video for “Here to Stay” — a funny claim for a band with so much “go” in their approach to be making — is made up of a lot of live footage. There are some other clips and stuff spliced in, but the bulk of the thing finds the four-piece kicking ass on stage, which by now is probably where they’re most at home in so doing. I’ve heard they’ve got new material on the way at some point this year — they were included last month in the most anticipated for 2017 list, if you missed it — and there can be little doubt that when it arrives, in whatever form it takes, the follow-up to Road Warriors will be yet another occasion for the band to get out on tour. Much to their credit, it doesn’t seem to take much to convince them.

You’ll find the live dates under the video player below for the Speedealer and Mothership tour. Note also that Against the Grain will be at Berserker Fest in Pontiac, Michigan, in April. One assumes there are more dates to follow as we head deeper into the year.

Enjoy:

Peter Pan Speedrock Announce Retirement

Posted in Whathaveyou on December 1st, 2015 by JJ Koczan

Can this possibly stick? Am I crazy for thinking that after 20 years, Dutch trio Peter Pan Speedrock might not just be able to put the band down and walk away? It’s like slamming into a brick wall at 100 miles an hour. I mean, right now and for the last couple nights, they’re in Japan. They toured in the US back in October. They’ve got an extensive run through Europe set up for before and after the New Year. Granted, they might need a break, but I have to think that sooner or later Peter Pan Speedrock will pick up again and continue their assault. It’s what Motörhead would do.

Until I hear otherwise though, they’re calling it a retirement. News came down the PR wire:

Peter Pan Speedrock announce retirement and plan international farewell tour for 2016

“It was loud, mean, fast & dirty”

An international farewell tour in 2016 will be the last chapter in the saga of the loudest band from the Lowlands. Dreams came true, goals were achieved, Peter Pan Speedrock had their say and left their mark, so the book may close. After twenty years it’s time for singer-guitarist Peter van Elderen, bassist Bartmann and drummer Bart Nederhand to embark on new endeavors. Meanwhile the Dutch speed rockers take off again, for their Japanese tour starts on November 27.

The farewell marks the end of an era, because Peter Pan Speedrock are more than a band. This force of nature is a counterweight for Holland’s lack of earthquakes and hurricanes. Since PPSR arose from Eindhoven in 1996, the sonic landscape in the Netherlands has been shaken up and blown to smithereens. This relentless approach eventually gained PPSR worldwide recognition. Alas their roller coaster ride will come to an end somewhere in 2016.

While they are flying to Japan, the three Lighttown diehards are probably reminiscing about a long and lively career. In 1996 they had a damn good feeling about the road ahead, but no-one foresaw it would lead Peter Pan Speedrock across the length and breadth of Europe numerous times, cut through by tours in North America and Australia. To top it all PPSR instigated the grand slam of rock on Dutch soil: Speedfest. Last Saturday this annual international festivalhalla celebrated its tenth anniversary.

With over 25 releases under their belt PPSR are still on top of their game: supercharging their own brand of rock & roll vigor and winning crowds over by playing scorching live shows. Initially they strived to play 2247 shows, as much shows as the Ramones, but the counter will stop at around 2000 shows next year. If that’s the only unreached objective, it must have been a wild and wonderful ride. And the million visitors who witnessed PPSR live over the years will agree. Let’s drink to that with some Speedrock Premium Heavy Lager. That’s right, PPSR even have their own beer brand as part of their legacy.

No matter what the future holds, Peter Pan Speedrock shall ring on forever and a day!

You Know Who to Release Debut Album Oct. 13

Posted in Whathaveyou on July 14th, 2015 by JJ Koczan

you know who

Palm Desert-based trio You Know Who will release their self-titled debut album on Oct. 13 via Self Destructo Records. The band features members of John Garcia‘s touring band, as well as Hermano, Mondo Generator, Waxy, The Dwarves, Sort of Quartet, on and on. And perhaps in an effort to distinguish themselves from their rather considerable pedigree, they’ve unveiled the new song “Marshall Stacks and Alcohol” which, by the sound of the thing, also seems to be a look at the creative process itself.

The PR wire brings details and audio:

you know who you know who

You Know Who announce release date of LP; Debut track “Marshall Stacks and Alcohol”

Mike Pygmie: Guitar/Vocals, Dylan Brown: Bass, Greg Saenz: Drums

On October 13th, Self Destructo Records will release the debut album by You Know Who on five hundred pieces of all white vinyl that are packaged in hand numbered silk screened covers with design and illustration created by graphic artist Casey Howard. Recorded and mixed at Dead End Studios in Palm Desert, CA and mastered at What? Studios in Denver, CO, the album consists of eleven tracks of crushing crossover metal/punk that we feel is a throwback to the days of yore when skate punks would head out from West LA to a Discharge/Anthrax gig at the Reseda Country Club and slam dance themselves to sleep. Songs like “Save Me Jebus” are chock full fast paced riffage and drop of the dime time changes while “Marshall Stacks in Alcohol” is circle pit inducer in itself from start to finish and “Chinese Shoes” is a breakneck verbal/sonic assault against multinational corporations incorporates Jello Biafra worthy lyrical content and humor with D.R.I. speed.

The low desert area of Southern California is a breeding ground to some of underground music’s most well regarded and celebrated acts such as: Kyuss, Fatso Jetson, Unsound, Masters of Reality, Yawning Man and of course Queens Of The Stone Age. DIY generator parties, legendary venue Rhythm and Brews on Highway 111 in Indio, CA and The Desert Sessions recordings played a big part in the development of the scene and for having music audiences and players looking to the area for new artists/bands to emerge since then.

However, what sets desert natives You Know Who apart is that they’re not a Kyuss clone at all, they play fast, heavy and technical punk/metal, the polar opposite of what mainstream music press has coined the desert sound to be. You Know Who consists of Mike Pygmie, Dylan Brown and Greg Saenz who got together in 2009 after cutting their chops in such bands as Excel, Dwarves and Invitro. What best describes their sound is taking the technicality and complex time changes of Bl’ast, mix in the speed and tongue n’ cheek humor of Suicidal Tendencies and Mr. Bungle and the virtuoso musicianship from each guy that forges a sound as harsh as the desert heat on a summer afternoon. Trust us, these guys have chops!! Since they brought their music to audiences across most of California and have shared the stage along such bands as: Jello Biafra & The Guantanamo School Of Medicine, Kyuss Lives, The Freeks, Dwarves, Angry Samoans, John Garcia, Agent Orange, The Chuck Norris Experiment, Nick Oliveri & The Uncontrollable, Mondo Generator & Fatso Jetson.

Peter Pan Speedrock to Release Buckle up and Shove It! on March 31

Posted in Whathaveyou on March 10th, 2015 by JJ Koczan

peter pan speedrock (Photo by Brendy Wijdeven)

When it arrives later this month/next month, Peter Pan Speedrock‘s Buckle up and Shove It! will be the Netherlands-based trio’s first North American release since 2007’s Pursuit until Capture, leaving 2010’s We Want Blood! ripe for reissue. Self Destructo Records will have Buckle up and Shove It! out on CD on March 31 with vinyl to follow in April. The album was also released by Suburban Records in Europe last year, but as Peter Pan Speedrock have never really gotten their due from the heavy punker Stateside contingent, a separate North American distribution seems like a fair move. Maybe they’ll tour. I’ll try not to get ahead of myself.

We turn to you, oh PR wire, with your copious informando and upcoming (European) tour dates:

peter pan speedrock buckle up and shove it

Self Destructo Records to unleash Peter Pan Speedrock in North America with the release of Buckle Up And Shove It!

Peter Van Elderen (Guitar/Vox) – Bart Geevers (Bass) – Bart Nederhand (Drums)

For the first time in a decade, the Netherlands prevalent group of balls out/motherfuckering rock n’ roll Peter Pan Speedrock will service their North American fan base in late Spring with their latest offering entitled Buckle Up And Shove It! to be released on CD and limited vinyl through Self Destructo Records.

Peter Pan Speedrock is hands down the hardest working band to come from the Dutch rock n’ roll scene. That can be said with absolute confidence on our end. The band derived their name from a condition called “Peter Pan Syndrome” (a popular psychological term regarding male social immaturity) and have a career together spanning nearly twenty years which includes 1800+ shows, eleven full lengths, a handful of E.P’s and split releases with appearances by fellow neck breakers Zeke, V8 Wankers, Batmobile, Gluecifer and Danko Jones. They’ve done transcontinental tours (Europe, Russia, Australia and USA), played to massive audiences at some of the largest festivals in the world (Pinkpop, SXSW, With Full Force, Dynamo Open Air) and organize/curate their own festival called Speedfest, which happens annually in their hometown of Eindhoven “Rock City” and draws 5,000 + from around the globe to the festival grounds. They’ve done tours with Turbonegro, Zeke, Honky (to name a few) across Europe, toured the US with Nashville Pussy and have opened up for Motörhead and Anthrax during tour stops in the Benelux. At Speedfest, they’ve shared the stage with some of the biggest names in underground hard rock (i.e. Monster Magnet, Suicidal Tendencies, The Fuzztones, Red Fang, The Reverend Horton Heat, ..And You Will Know Us By Trail Of The Dead, Doomriders, Napalm Death and TONS of others.)

Buckle Up And Shove It! consists of thirteen blistering tracks that blur the lines for anyone attempting to categorize them as a punk or metal band. Just a pure sonic assault on the ears. For 37 minutes, these cats exhibit their love for Motorhead-like heaviness, AC/DC like riff structures, the speed and ferocity of Zeke and conjure the swagger of The Damned. Recommended tracks like “Murdertruck” and “Get You High” bring out exactly what any hard rock fan wants: Illegal activity praise, POUNDING drums and down strokes on the strings on a Les Paul and Fender Jazzmaster through Eindhoven amplifiers (these dudes support as much local Nethelands business as possible). The album will be released on CD and highly limited vinyl in a first run flaming translucent beauty for North America. Buckle Up And Shove It! will be made available through Shop Self Destructo, Shop Turbojugend and wholesale through Cobraside Distribution.

As mentioned earlier, its been a decade (and countless amounts of Grolsch consumed by these lads) since a Peter Pan Speedrock album has been picked in North America for a release (last one being Pursuit Until Capture c/o Prophase Music). The last time Peter Pan Speedrock made a presence in North America was at the turn of the century with two appearances at SXSW (2001 and 2003) and a 25 date tour through the US and Canada with Georgia based sex, riff n’ whiskey thumpers Nashville Pussy. We here at Self Destructo Records have been avid fans of these guys for years and the opportunity to work alongside Suburban Records to push these guys in North America is something we’re not taking lightly, we’re proud to have Peter Pan Speedrock be a part of our roster alongside The Meatmen, The Hip Priests, Against The Grain, Razorbats and the rest of our brothers here.

Release Date and formats for North America
Digital – March 24
CD – March 31
Vinyl – April 21

Lo-Pan and Against the Grain Announce Northeast Tour Dates

Posted in Whathaveyou on January 9th, 2015 by JJ Koczan

Before they split out for Europe in April and, presumably once reaching its shores decide never to return, Ohio fuzz rockers Lo-Pan will hit the road like they do with Detroit speedfreaks Against the Grain. The tour will be in the north and northeast, which should be almost thinking about thawing out by then, and is set to start March 12 and run until March 22. For Lo-Pan, they’re out supporting last year’s Colossus (review here), while the oft-touring Against the Grain will have by that time recorded their fourth album, which is set to release later in 2015.

Like I said, after this, Lo-Pan are off to Europe alongside Black Pyramid, but it’s worth noting that this will be their first tour with guitarist Adrian Zambrano, so it should be a chance for them to further solidify before they go. They’ve given themselves a high-energy companion in Against the Grain, who will no doubt keep them on their toes for the duration.

The PR wire brings details and dates, and we all like details and dates, right? Okay then:

Against the Grain Announce US Tour Dates

Posted in Whathaveyou on September 1st, 2014 by JJ Koczan

against the grain

Just a couple weeks out from losing gear in the same Detroit-area floods that took out the Small Stone Records offices, heavy rock troublemakers Against the Grain have announced they’ll hit the road in October alongside long-running punk outfits Guttermouth and Voodoo Glowskulls. To be perfectly honest, neither is really my thing, but I have no doubt that Against the Grain‘s high-energy thrust will do well on tour with them, and it’s yet another in the four-piece’s continuing series of runs that seems to be geared toward their perfecting their craft, rugged and dirty as that craft might be. I’m glad they’ve gotten their gear back and I’m glad they’re getting out again.

The PR wire puts it like this:

against the grain

Against The Grain suffered a major blow as a band when their gear was destroyed by flooding in their practice space due to freaks thunderstorms occurring in Detroit in early August but due to support from all over (including a message of assistance from the Valient Thorr/Revolving Beast camp), they managed to successfully raise the money needed to assist them in getting new gear to get back on the road. On September 12th, they will be a part of a benefit show being held at The Corktown Tavern in Detroit with Axe Ripper, Rawdogs and Mud Falcon playing as support to Against The Grain. Tesco Vee has signed on to be MC’ing for the night and to host a silent auction of vintage Meatmen/Touch and Go items.

In what has been an extremely active year of 2014 A.D. for the band, Against The Grain has toured all over the states in support of their re-release of Motor City Speed Rock that Self Destructo Records put out on 10” vinyl. They’re in the middle of writing new songs for their upcoming record that will see the light of day in mid 2015 with touring plans already solidified for January 2015 with a Detroit favorite of the underground scene, more of that plus other news in development in the following weeks.

Motor City Speed Rock and Surrounded By Snakes vinyl are available at http://www.shopturbojugend.com and all digital streaming/download services (i.e. Spotify, iTunes, Google Play, Amazon Mp3 and more) worldwide.

Revolving Beast and Turbojugend Kokomo Stream Tracks from New Split 12″

Posted in audiObelisk on May 29th, 2014 by JJ Koczan

Seems like a safe assumption that between the feedback-soaked intro to Revolving Beast‘s “Hogs,” the Voivod-meets-MondoGenerator weirdness that plays out from there, and the acoustic, “Tiki-themed” cover of Turbonegro‘s “All My Friends are Dead” by Norwegian cover act Turbojugend Kokomo, at some point as you make your way through the nine minutes or so of music below, you’re going to wonder just what the hell is going on. It’s okay. That’s pretty much the whole idea.

The tracks come from a Self-Destructo Records split 12″ between the two vastly different acts, based alternately in North Carolina and Oslo, and yeah, things get pretty weird. Revolving Beast are given to layered solos, prog-metal rhythmic insistence, and deft turns that create overarching groove where one wouldn’t expect it could thrive. “Hogs” has a jagged feel and makes quick work of its shifts, which betrays some of the trio’s pedigree in acts like Valient Thorr, The Church of Zann and The Black Hellatones these are guys who’ve been around — but the three-piece keep a steady flow and hold the track together, which is a significant accomplishment considering how off-the-rails some of it sounds.

And “All My Friends are Dead?” Well, it’s an acoustic Turbonegro cover. At under 90 seconds, it’s over before you know it, but before then, it keeps the madcap infectiousness of the original, which appeared on Turbonegro‘s 2005 outing, Party Animals, but strips the song down to its bare bones, a verse, a hook, repeat. As zany as Turbonegro have been for the better part of the last 25 years, Turbojugend Kokomo emphasize that what’s underneath the wacky hats, drunken antics and perpetual cult following, there’s a quality of songwriting serving as the foundation for all the rest.

If you wanted something a little off from the norm, start with either. PR wire info follows the tracks below:

Self Destructo Records announces split 12” with North Carolina’s Revolving Beast and Oslo, Norway’s Turbojugend Kokomo

North Carolina power trio Revolving Beast and Scandinavian vocal/guitar quintet Turbojugend Kokomo to be featured on split LP out in late summer 2014 via Self Destructo Records. We welcome them to the family!!

Revolving Beast is a NC based power trio comprised of guitarist Benjamin Earl, drummer Storm Castañeda, and bassist Kenneth Ells. While their collective musical pedigree implies a form of rock and roll that is equal parts aggression and complexity – see Valient Thorr, Thunderlip, The Kickass, The Church of Zann, and The Black Hellatones for a short list of their previous work – they write songs in an unnamed argot. Amorphous and crystalline, a landlocked island, they pierce your hull, sever your canvas, and nurture you with their affectation.

Revolving Beast has already played a handful of shows around the Southeast area and has been met with good responses by the crowds.

Revolving Beast live:
– June 1st at The Cave (Chapel Hill, NC): Brief Lives, Revolving Beast, Bitter Resolve.

Turbojugend Kokomo is a vocal group consisting of five drunken Norwegian rock n rollers who are members of Turbojugend Oslo, the mother chapter of the Turbojugend, the global fan club of the Scandinavian hard rock band Turbonegro. Formed in the winter of 2006 under the influence of pizza and beer and hailing from the cold city of Oslo, these Beach Boy worshipping, Hawaiian shirt clad Scandinavians have traveled throughout Europe (most notably Germany and Sweden) using their natural talents to have audiences walking into bars in curiosity and walking out in disbelief since. They’ve played such events as the Welt Turbojugend Tage (St. Pauli, Hamburg) and the Oslo Bloodbath; they’ve been featured on various recordings and tribute albums from various labels (most notably for Trashcan Darlings and for Turbonegro).

Turbojugend Kokomo is:
Tanked Mongo – Vocals, Guitars and Tambourine
Party Cowboy – Vocals and Kazoo
Twin Turbo – Vocals and Triangle
Turbo Truls – Bass & Vocals
Peke PresHenning – Vocals

The two bands will have four songs each be featured on a limited split 12” LP out in early Fall 2014 via Self Destructo Records. Both bands, despite their difference in sound, are excited to be a part of this release and to be working alongside each other.

Track listing is as follows:

Turbojugend Kokomo:
1. All My Friends Are Dead
2. Whiskey in the Jar
3. Sloop John B.
4. House of The Rising Sun

Revolving Beast:
1. Four Banger
2. The Burning Of Salem
3. Hounds
4. Hogs

Against the Grain Announce Winter Tour Dates and Motor City Speed Rock 10″ Vinyl

Posted in Whathaveyou on January 21st, 2014 by JJ Koczan

If I’ve learned one thing in this still-pretty-new New Year, it’s that there’s going to be a ton of shit going on all the time, and on that level, kudos to Detroit four-piece Against the Grain for putting their hats and beards in the ring. The dudely duders who released their third full-length Surrounded by Snakes last year (review here) and subsequently hit the road alongside Church of Misery will once more take it to the people starting next month, hitting the Midwest and the East Coast before heading back for a hometown release show for the forthcoming Self-Destructo Records 10″ vinyl issue of their 2012 Motor City Speed Rock release.

Detroit’s own Motor City Madmen – Against The Grain start off 2014 with a two month trek across Middle America and the Eastern Seaboard in support of their vinyl re-release of Motor City Speed Rock. Originally released in 2012, it was the album that laid the foundation for their presence in the heavy music community in their city of Detroit and neighboring states alike and opened doors for them to play alongside the likes of The Dwarves, Valient Thorr, Zeke, Holley 750, Riverboat Gamblers and The Meatmen.

Self Destructo Records released their third LP entitled “Surrounded By Snakes” in 2013, which catapulted the band full on into the world of stoner rock/doom. Following the release of Surrounded By Snakes, opening slots in Detroit for Saint Vitus, Orange Goblin and a tour with Japanese doom veterans Church of Misery ensued.

Stream Surrounded By Snakes and Motor City Speed Rock in its entirety below, available for a week upload.
