Borracho Announce 10th Anniversary Oculus Reissue Out Oct. 13

Posted in Whathaveyou on September 6th, 2023 by JJ Koczan

Washington D.C. heavy rock trio Borracho are not unaware of the passage of time. Even as they celebrate the release of their new album, Blurring the Lines of Reality (review here) just a couple weeks ago, the rollers o’ riff have let it be known that together with Savage Magic Records they’ll reissue their 2013 outing, 2013’s Oculus (review here), to mark its 10th anniversary.

Oculus was a special moment for Borracho. Following their well-received 2011 debut, Splitting Sky (review here), it was their first full-length to boast the lineup of guitarist/vocalist Steve Fisher, bassist Tim Martin and Mario Trubiano on drums, which, if you caught the latest LP, you already know is the lineup they still have this decade later. They took a risk. It worked. A decade later, looking back on that and celebrating a success seems a worthy endeavor, even if the timing is weird since they just put out a record. Someone once told me you can’t stop progress. I wouldn’t dream of trying.

LPs ship in October, or so their Bandcamp tells me. You might recall Borracho also put out the Riffography (review here) collection in 2017 to note 10 years since the start of the band. This is why you keep track of birthdays.

BORRACHO Announce Tenth Anniversary Reissue of OCULUS

Creating a sonic tapestry that transcends boundaries, Washington DC’s Borracho combine elements of classic, doom, and progressive rock to form a signature sound that has resonated with fans since their formation over fifteen years ago.

Drawing on influences that span decades, they combine soaring musicality with subterranean propulsion, encompassing the hard-driven strut of acts like Black Sabbath and Mountain, stoner jams of Clutch and Fu Manchu, and the unmistakable energy of Mastodon and High on Fire.

Following the critically acclaimed release of their fifth studio album Blurring the Lines of Reality this summer, the trio will also revisit a big part of their history with the official tenth anniversary reissue of Oculus. Viewed upon by the band as “something of a second debut,” given personnel and directional changes, Oculus heralded the arrival of Borracho’s classic and current line-up. Showcasing the fast, purposeful growth that Steve Fisher, Tim Martin and Mario Trubiano undertook in playing as a power trio. Having gone on to release several albums since to commemorate the occasion the band has teamed up once again with Savage Magic Records, one of the original labels who released the record in 2013.

“I’ve known these guys a long time and have been working with them on vinyl releases for over a decade,” explains SMR’s Carey Neill. “To have a chance to reissue Oculus and work with them again has been so fun. I’m sure hearing it again on fresh wax will rekindle the excitement about it from back then for a new generation of listeners.”

Duster 69 to Release With Best Regards in June

Posted in Whathaveyou on April 12th, 2022 by JJ Koczan

After their 2021 EP that was called — wait for it — 2021 (review here), it’s not a huge surprise to hear more from reignited German heavy rockers Duster 69, who if you can’t trace their sound back to turn-of-the-century-era nascent European stonerrockness, then certainly the star on their logo should speak to the era. Still, the more you know the better off you are, so in addition to that new release testing the waters for a proper return, the band has now moved forward with a gathering of some 13 tracks (11 on vinyl) from their first run in the form of With Best Regards, a new LP/CD/DL collection that spans 1999-2008 and has had its material completely remastered for this new release.

It’s not a complete stretch of catalog reissues, but neither is it unjustified. There were a slew of bands like this at the time, laying the groundwork for what became the vital creativity of the German underground — to say nothing of greater Europe — so to have them back is a boon even if this will be the first time many listeners who’ve gotten into the style since encounter them. There are three labels involved here in Savage Magic, Ozium and Daredevil Records, with a total of 200 CDs and 200 LPs pressed. Seems like maybe an argument in favor of checking it out while the checking’s good.

duster 69 with best regards

Duster 69 With Best Regards LP/CD (SM-059)

Between 1999 and 2007, German stoner rockers Duster 69 released four full length albums, a handful of split EPs and singles with bands like Calamus, The Awesome Machine, Rickshaw, and House Of Broken Promises, and one final EP before splitting up. A collection of rare and unreleased stuff came out in 2008 and capped off the band’s initial run.

After 14 years, the band’s original lineup got together and recorded two new songs for a very limited single on No Balls Records appropriately titled 2021.

Knowing that all the original releases are long sold out and out of print, the band wanted to put together a career spanning collection. Here we have 13 tracks carefully selected from all those albums, EPs, and singles remastered just for this release.

This will be a limited pressing of only 200 LPs. 100 will be pressed on beige vinyl and available only here through Savage Magic Records. 100 will be pressed on red vinyl and available through Ozium Records in Sweden and Daredevil Records in Germany. 200 digipak CDs containing two bonus tracks will also be pressed and be available in limited amounts from each label.

Keep an eye out for updates as we get closer to the release date. We’re shooting for June/July.

As always, thanks for your support!

~ Carey/SMR

Borracho to Release 7″ with Jake Starr on Vocals

Posted in Whathaveyou on February 19th, 2020 by JJ Koczan

borracho with jake starr

Five years after joining forces on stage at a Savage Magic Records showcase in California Borracho and former Adam West frontman Jake Starr — currently of Jake Starr and The Delicious Fullness — have put together a two-song 7″ single with a couple of Adam West tracks redone in the studio. Borracho drummer Mario Trubiano played in the more garage-style rocking outfit as well, who were long a staple of the Washington D.C. underground, putting out a massive slew of short releases as well as five full-lengths, the last of which was offered up in 2008.

Something cool for fans either of Starr‘s work or of Borracho, but clearly the kind of thing undertaken because they wanted to do it rather than as any sort of high-profile outing. Still, the most recent Borracho release was 2017’s Riffography (review here), so whatever they’ve got is welcome. One wouldn’t necessarily expect it to lead to any further collaboration, but of course one also never knows pretty much anything, ever, ever, ever, so take that for what it’s worth and maybe just dig into some songs. Cool.

Borracho with Jake Starr 7″ (SM-046)

If you were there for the Strange Magic Showcase Night #1 in Pomona, CA January 31st, 2015, then you saw Jake Starr take the stage with Borracho and knock out two amazing versions of Adam West classics. It sounded so incredible, we immediately got to talking about getting these two songs recorded in the studio and releasing a 7-inch. Lo and behold, and five years later it has actually happened! Here we have “Sixth Son of a Seventh Son” from Adam West’s 2002 single of the same name, and “Bulletproof” from Adam West’s 2005 album “Power to the People” completely re-imagined and re-recorded Borracho-style!
