Set for Sept. 15-18 in White Hall, Maryland, Shadow Woods Metal Fest 2016 has completed its lineup. The fest runs a gamut of extremity from blackened noise to rolling stoner grooves and covers copious ground between in death metal, doom, drone and heavy rock, and the final nine acts announced only add to its breadth. This is the second year for Shadow Woods Metal Fest, and very clearly fest organizer Mary Spiro is staying true to the vision of a backwoods vibe, exploring the connection between a natural setting and various incarnations of heaviness. To be blunt, I don’t know all these bands and they’re not all really in my sphere so much as I have one, but I’d love to check this out anyway, just for the vibe of it.

Spiro works hard as hell on putting this together. Nothing but respect. Tickets are on sale now.

SHADOW WOODS METAL FEST: Complete 2016 Lineup For East Coast Open-Air Metal Fest Announced; Tickets Available + Trailers Posted

SHADOW WOODS METAL FEST, the Mid-Atlantic’s open-air camping metal party, is pleased to announce the complete lineup for the 2016 festival, which runs from Thursday, September 15th through Sunday, September 18th at Camp Hidden Valley, in White Hall, Maryland. This year, forty metal bands, representing diverse subgenres, will terrorize three stages in the woodlands of The Old Line State at the same summer camp where the fest was held last year.

Highlights of this year’s installment include a set by the mysterious GHOST BATH from North Dakota who have never performed live until this year, will be playing the event. The festival welcomes their first Canadian act to this year’s event with Calgary’s NUMENOREAN, and Baltimore’s trippy duo DARSOMBRA will headline Thursday night. Brooklyn’s post black metal pillagers TOMBS, Mongolian folk metal warriors TENGGER CAVALRY, Detroit’s horror-death conjurers ACID WITCH, and a special reunion performance from Philly’s blackened doom two-piece SADGIQACEA will ignite the fires Friday night. Black-thrash alchemists BLOOD STORM, Chicago’s mystic black metal kings EMPYREUS (featuring members of Kommandant) and the doom metal godfather SCOTT “WINO” WEINRICH and friends from Western Maryland’s FAITH IN JANE will headline Saturday night. The fest will close with the return of the black metal-blues shredders ZUD from Maine.

“We are honored and humbled that all these great acts have agreed to play our little gathering in the woods,” says festival founder Mary Spiro of Metallomusikum.com/Shadow Woods Productions LLC. “Our team has worked diligently to bring these groups to our unique performance environment, and we cannot wait to see how the weekend unfolds. This lineup stays true to the fest’s mission of showcasing the bands that metal fans ought to be seeing and hearing, not simply the bands that everyone has already seen somewhere else.”

This year’s lineup also boasts several acts that have never performed on the East Coast, such as the blackened space-rock pair LOTUS THIEF from San Francisco, which features Otrebor of Botanist on drums, and Colorado’s HELLEBORUS, powered by the Houseman brothers (Akhenaten; ex-Execration), who specialize in psychedelic black metal tinged with sexual mysticism. The complete lineup (listed below) surpasses the ferocity of the fest’s inaugural installment in both diversity and scope of metal styles.

Grimoire Records, the Baltimore-based hybrid recording and distribution label founded in February 2013, has become a co-producer with Shadow Woods Productions, LLC, and has several bands featured throughout the weekend, including CORPSE LIGHT, GENEVIEVE, MYOPIC, and TORRID HUSK.

Attendees will be able to munch of a plethora of food choices throughout the weekend including the return of the high octane Zeke’s Coffee and vegan selections from Headbangin’ Hotdogs, among several others. Jewelry, knitted-wear, art, CDs, vinyl, t-shirts and more will be on sale in the festival’s long hall. Yoga sessions will again be held each morning for those willing to brave a downward dog with a hangover. Other workshops are to be announced. The fest is BYOB and is 21 and up only. Those interested in vending, teaching a free workshop or who have specific questions should send an email with a description of your products and a website link to contact@shadowwoodsmetalfest.com

Weekend Passes for SHADOW WOODS METAL FEST are available for $130 at BrownPaperTickets.com. Tent camping is included with the weekend pass. People who want to reserve cabin beds can do so for an additional $20 for the duration of the fest. Only 400 weekend passes will be available and about one-third have sold so far. Sadgiqacea Announce Extensive Summer Touring with Hivelords

Posted in Whathaveyou on June 9th, 2014 by JJ Koczan

I have to admit, looking at a post from Sadgiqacea tourmates Hivelords saying they’re looking for someone to tag along and sell merch on their upcoming month-plus run from June 20 to July 26 is a pretty tempting prospect. Would be a long time out, but The Patient Mrs. will be gone for most of that time anyway — she leaves at the end of June for a month away — and the only real concern is what would I do with the dog. Oh well.

While I don’t think I’ll be volunteering, you might want to, and if so, hit up Hivelords on their Thee Facebooks. The tour is an admirable run, with some house shows — or what look an awful lot like house shows anyway — mixed in with some bars/venues and a couple dates to be filled in yet as Sadgiqacea and Hivelords both head out in support of their 2013 debut LPs.

To be informed:

Sadgiqacea Announce Tour with Haethen

Posted in Whathaveyou on September 9th, 2013 by JJ Koczan

Including a two-show day on Sept. 21 covering the Indianapolis Metalfest III and later that evening in Dayton, Ohio — just a thrilling trip down I-70 away — Sadgiqacea are once again hitting the road in support of their 2013 Candlelight Records debut, False Prism, and they’re bringing along the also-difficult-to-spell-but-in-a-subtler-way Haethen for the trip. It’s a week of shows that start next Wednesday and they’ve aptly called it the “Week Long Tour.” Truth in advertising.

Also sprach the PR wire:

SADGIQACEA: September Eastern US Tour Dates Confirmed

While still unpacking from their massive recent Summer trek which saw the duo occupying more than forty cities across the country with cohorts Hivelords, this week Philadelphia-based spiritualistic sludge duo SADGIQACEA confirms yet another new tour in support of their Candlelight Records debut False Prism.

Originating in Boston on Wednesday, September 18th, the new bout of East Coast performances will take SADGIQACEA on a six-city trek through Washington, Columbus, Indianapolis and Dayton before the final show in Pittsburgh on Sunday the 22nd. SADGIQACEA will be performing alongside their comrades Haethen for all shows except the Indianapolis Metalfest III where they’ll play alongside the likes of Incantation, Decrepit Birth, Byzantine and more, but following their early set at the fest the duo will trek over to Dayton, Ohio to meet back up with Haethen for a second show that day.

SADGIQACEA Fall Tour w/ Haethen:
9/18/2013 Roggies – Boston, MA w/ The Binary Code, Scaphism, Brain Famine
9/19/2013 The Pinch Bar – Washington, DC w/ Caustic Casanova
9/20/2013 The Summit – Columbus, OH w/ Swarm
9/21/2013 Old National Centre – Indianapolis, IN @ Indianapolis Metalfest III (*no Haethen)
9/21/2013 Blind Bob’s – Dayton, OH w/ Half Ghost
9/22/2013 The Smiling Moose – Pittsburgh, PA w/ Dendritic Arbor, Wrought Iron, Dutchguts, Ubasute, Dope Lake

SADGIQACEA draws from a melting pot of influences that together presents a lush yet tension-filled sound. Their debut full-length, False Prism, is a forty-minute journey bearing four mammoth tracks, captured without the use of overdubs to preserve the authentic recording quality of their live performances, recorded and produced by Chris Grigg of Woe. False Prism was released via Candlelight on CD and limited edition vinyl via Anthropic Records in May.

Sadgiqacea Start Summer Tour July 4

Posted in Whathaveyou on June 25th, 2013 by JJ Koczan

Anybody remember that scene in Independence Day when Will Smith suckerpunched that alien in the face and said “Welcome to Erf?” like human beings are all tough and these aliens who just jetted across the galaxy to try and mess with us were chumps? I’ve never seen Philly twosome Sadgiqacea before but I imagine that catching them on the Fourth of July would probably feel something like being punched in the face. Only with volume. Welcome to Erf.

Sadgiqacea (which is pronounced “sadji-whozawhatsits”) are out supporting their Candlelight Records debut, False Prism, and if you ever wanted to know what a long-ass tour looks like, it features two shows in Jersey:

SADGIQACEA: Rigorous U.S. Summer Tour Begins Next Week

Following sporadic, regional shows supporting the release of the record, SADGIQACEA will take on as much of the country as possible this Summer as their brutal forty-two date trek with brethren Hivelords kicks off on Independence Day. Some Asshole Steals Sadgiqacea’s Van, Stuff

Posted in Whathaveyou on June 21st, 2011 by JJ Koczan

Every time something like this happens, I say the same damn thing: It’s a special kind of asshole who steals shit from a band’s van. Even more so, it’s an even more special asshole who steals the van altogether. Come on, you can’t even carry their stuff off as you take it? You’ve got to get the whole vehicle too? It’s a fucking travesty. The complete inventory of everything taken is here.

My best hopes to recently On the Radar-ized Philly smashers Sadgiqacea that they get their equipment, merch and vehicle back, and that whoever stole it is apprehended and brought to justice. Here’s the news and contact info in case anyone can help, even by sending the band your support or helping spread the word:

Achtung metal legions – we need your help!

Yesterday, Philly doomhaulers Sadgiqacea had their tour van parked on 13th and Carpenter in South Philadelphia when it was stolen around the hours of 12-7PM. Everything they owned was in the van, including all of their merch and gear. Total estimated loss of gear and merch is about $8,500. This duo is one of the hardest-working bands to ever come out of the (215), and are amazingly talented musicians on top of being genuinely sweet, good-hearted guys. This couldn’t have happened to two less deserving people. If you’re located in or around the Tri-State area (PA/NJ/DE and NY) please keep your eyes peeled, and get in touch if you hear or see anything.

On the Radar: Sadgiqacea

Posted in On the Radar on May 27th, 2011 by JJ Koczan

When a band’s logo comes complete with its own pronunciation guide, you know you’re in for a phonetic treat. Not to be confused with the happy-giqacea you might find elsewhere, Philly guitar/drum duo Sadgiqacea specialize in oppressively dark and bleak post-doomcore, all lumber and crash and heavy and pummel the way the kids like it these days. There are some vague touches of psychedelia in the far-off echoing clean vocals of “Nature’s Antidote” — the second of two crushing tracks Sadgiqacea donate to the cause of a split with Phanatic countrymen Ominous Black — but mostly they’re just mean and dark, and that works out just fine.

The two songs were recorded, mixed and mastered by Mick Mullin at Super 8, whose impressive discography includes Total Fucking Destruction, Fight Amp and Javelina, and in about 13 minutes, they effectively cloud the mind in a wash of malevolent sounds. Even the surf-esque opening guitar lines of “Thy Will be None” feel as though they’ve been run through a hellish alternate dimension, and as the vocals once again change from yells to echoing clean singing, there’s an underlying melodicism that I can’t imagine Sadgiqacea won’t continue to develop going forward.

In the meantime, there’s enough low end in their sound to likely please everyone but bassists, and enough of a genre mix happening in the material to hold even the most fickle of attentions. You can check out Sadgiqacea on Thee Facebooks here, or if you’d rather not travel, here are “Thy Will be None” and “Nature’s Antidote,” courtesy of a fancy-type Bandcamp player:
