audiObelisk: Stream Roadburn 2013 Sets from Eternal Tapestry, Ihsahn, Moss, Mournful Congregation, Penance and Switchblade

Posted in audiObelisk on July 15th, 2013 by JJ Koczan

Already the announcements have started up for Roadburn 2014 — as demonstrated last week by the landmark revelation that a reunited Loop will headline — but in the meantime, there are still more audio sets from the 2013 fest to unveil, and the latest batch has a little something for everyone. From the ambient post-everything of Eternal Tapestry to the crushing tonality of Switchblade and the trad-doom plod of Penance, it’s like a sampler platter that still only begins to give some hint of the stylistic ground the highly-varied festival has come to cover in recent years.

As always, these recordings were overseen by Marcel van de Vondervoort and it’s through the courtesy of Walter and the rest of the Roadburn crew that I’m able to host them here for your streaming pleasure. Much thanks to all involved.

Please enjoy:

Eternal Tapestry – Live at Roadburn 2013

Insahn – Live at Roadburn 2013

Moss – Live at Roadburn 2013

Mournful Congregation – Live at Roadburn 2013

Diagonal Added to Complete Roadburn 2013 Afterburner Lineup; Tickets Still Available

Posted in Whathaveyou on January 8th, 2013 by JJ Koczan

It was bound to happen sooner or later, but with the addition of British progressive rockers Diagonal, the lineup for the 2013 Roadburn Afterburner is complete. I can say with some confidence this is the most diverse roster of acts I’ve seen for the Sunday after Roadburn proper, which I’ve always looked at as a way to transition from the festival back into the much more drab existence of the real world, with Spiritual Beggars playing alongside Nihill, Sigh alongside Golden Void, and Astra rocking down the hall from Die Kreuzen. Weirdness is afoot and I couldn’t be more stoked.

Tickets are still available via the link included below. Here’s the official announcement:

Diagonal To Complete The Lineup For The 2013 Roadburn Afterburner

We are very excited to announce that UK prog act Diagonal  will be making a highly anticipated return to Roadburn. This completes the lineup for the 2013 Afterburner, which includes Rise Above labelmates Astra, Ihsahn, Michael Rother Presents The Music of NEU! and Harmonia, Spiritual Beggars, Die Kreuzen, The Devil’s Blood, Golden Void, Sigh, Nihill, Switchblade and Leprous, and takes place Sunday, April 21at the 013 venue in Tilburg, Holland. Diagonal will follow up their extraordinary and challenging 2008 Roadburn performance with a new set to promote their sophomore release, The Second Mechanism.

Aficionados of Vertigo-label inspired prog-jazz-fusion and Canterbury-flavored krautrock or psychedelica will want to check out Diagonal, whose sound recalls vintage 60s and 70s bands like Pink Floyd, Soft Machine, Hatfield and the North and Tangerine Dream. Their adventurous prog explorations are infused with lush keyboard soundscapes, scattered jazz sax, guitar, and keyboard melodies. At the same time, there is no shortage of heavy riffing and some searing guitar solos. Diagonal is definitely a band to watch in 2013.

Roadburn Festival 2013 will run for four days from Thursday, April 18th to Sunday, April 21st, 2013 (the traditional Afterburner event) at the 013 venue in Tilburg, Holland. Tickets for the Afterburner are still available!

High on Fire, Dream Death, Penance, The Midnight Ghost Train & More Added to Roadburn 2013 Lineup

Posted in Whathaveyou on November 13th, 2012 by JJ Koczan

Time marches on and the Roadburn 2013 lineup becomes increasingly unfuckwithable. In this latest update we learn that High on Fire will play The Art of Self-Defense in its entirety (as well as do a regular set), and that among others, The Midnight Ghost Train have joined the lineup! Those dudes kill live and have just toured Europe again, so it’s awesome to see their hard work paying off with a gig at a fest like this. Congrats to the band. Also included is info about Jus Oborn of Electric Wizard‘s curated event, and announcements of PenanceDream Death (their first Euro show!), Maserati, Ash Borer, Intronaut, The Atlas Moth, and more.

Massive as ever:

HIGH ON FIRE TO PLAY TWO EXCLUSIVE SHOWS AT ROADBURN 2013, DREAM DEATH & PSYCHIC TV/PTV3 CONFIRMED FOR JUS OBORN’S CURATED ROADBURN EVENT, DOOM PIONEERS PENANCE AND MORE CONFIRMED

Here are the latest updates from Roadburn headquarters:

We’re elated to announce that Oakland, CA heavy metal juggernaut High on Fire will bring their enormous sonic assault to Roadburn Festival 2013 for two exclusive shows.

On Thursday, April 18th, High on Fire will play their landmark debut, The Art of Self Defense, in its entirety. Initially released in 2000 by Man’s Ruin Records (and now reissued by Southern Lord), The Art of Self Defense displayed a new, intensely primal attitude for stoner rock / metal that broke away from the laid back desert bands.

On Saturday, April 20th, Matt Pike, Des Kensel and Jeff Matz will bring their brute force musicianship and thundering roar, anchored in an endlessly captivating, punkishly frantic sound to Roadburn 2013. This set will showcasing High on Fire’s obsession with Motörheadish thrash, stunningly renderd on instant classics like De Vermis Mysteriis, and Snakes for the Divine. More info on High on Fire here: http://wp.me/p1m0FP-6zY

Electric Wizard is proud to present two more mindblowing freakouts for The Electric Acid Orgy: “Cult (and we mean really fuckin kkvvuullttttt!!???) Pittsburgh Doom pioneers Dream Death are back from the dead!!, says Jus Oborn. “1987’s Journey into Mystery LP was a blueprint for a ‘chosen few ‘doom freaks… evil churning riffs, proto 70s influences, HP lovecraft / weird tales inspired lyrics and tortured ‘real’ vocals.”

“Everyone else was ‘thrashing’ but this was it… ominous, foreboding, twisted and evil and it definitley pointed us in the right direction. We are unbelievably excited to witness them live at last and hope you will join us in screaming every word from Back From The Dead: “I hope you enjoyed the living me cos the dead one never ends.” More info on Dream Death’s first ever European performance here: http://wp.me/p1m0FP-6yU

“And from even further into the abyss we present legendary aural terrorists and brain agitators Psychic TV / PTV3!!! Formed in the early 80’s after the disbanding of Throbbing Gristle, this legendary outfit was always a dark subliminal influence. Their live performances would still haunt various festivals when we were teenagers and they were always scary… their fans , their image. Back then it meant something to shock people, to wake them up from their government imposed comas.

“I also remember their fake (?) cult Temple Ov Psychic Youth”, says Jus, “which had a huge influence on us and the early black metal scene, they even got satanic ritual footage on the BBC. Its all been done before kids and it started here.” More info on Psychic TV / PTV3 here: http://wp.me/p1m0FP-6zS

More info on Jus Oborn’s The Electric Acid Orgy here: http://wp.me/p1m0FP-6An

Their name has perennially appeared on Roadburn Festival wish lists. Like many of you, we have been dreaming of finally getting a chance to see them live. And now, for the first time since touring with Cathedral and Sleep in 1993, doom pioneers Penance (the Parallel Corners lineup) will return to Europe for an exclusive appearance at Roadburn 2013! More info on Penance here: http://wp.me/p1m0FP-6yO

Ash Borer, Fell Voices, The Atlas Moth, Intronaut, Maserati, The Midnight Ghost Train and Raketkanon are also confirmed for Roadburn Festival 2013.

Roadburn Festival 2013, including Electric Wizard, Godflesh playing Pure in its entirety for the first time ever, Neige (Alcest) as Artist-in-Residence , Spiritual Beggars, Ihsahn and Die Kreuzen reunion among others, will run for four days from Thursday, April 18th to Sunday, April 21st, 2013 (the traditional Afterburner event) at the 013 venue in Tilburg, Holland.

Tickets for the Roadburn 2013 Afterburner are still available: http://www.roadburn.com/roadburn-2013/tickets

Mr. Peter Hayden Added to Roadburn 2013

Posted in Whathaveyou on September 24th, 2012 by JJ Koczan

While I’m saying congratulations today, way to go to Finnish space crushers Mr. Peter Hayden. The announcement came through this morning that the band — who released their second album, Born a Trip (review here), earlier this year — will be joining the lineup for Roadburn next year, and not a moment too soon. One imagines any further delay in those stars aligning and MPH would be off on some other time continuum somewhere, jamming until nebula clouds of smoke rise from their amplifiers.

Or something. Whatever, the band’s cool, and good for them they get to be cool at the 013 in ‘013. Dig it:

Mr. Peter Hayden To Bring Their Lysergic Post-Metal / Space Rock To Roadburn 2013.

We’re very pleased to announce that elusive Finnish psychedelic crushers Mr. Peter Hayden will bring their lysergically elliptical planetary travelogues to Roadburn Festival 2013 on Saturday, April 20th at the 013 venue in Tilburg, Holland.

Mr Peter Hayden‘s post-metal-infused space-rock is comprised of intertwining movements built from long progressive builds reaching cosmically thundering apexes heavily immersed in the vastness and darkness of deep space. This is melded with spacey ambience, which ventures off into impressive prog textures and vaguely-melodic synth wash punctuated by rhythmic chug and drum thud. Their excursions rise and fall tidally, offering minute wave-like undulations to coincide with the larger push and pull.

At the peak of their gargantuan cosmic improvisational powers — spectacularly demonstrated on both their debut full-length, Faster Than Speed, and this year’s sophomore album, Born A TripMr. Peter Hayden‘s space opuses are devoid of the rushes of light and the sun drenched jams present in so many contemporary European psychedelic bands; instead they are all about cosmic travel deep in throes of brown acid!

Roadburn Festival 2013 will run for four days from Thursday, April 18th to Sunday, April 21st, 2013 (the traditional Afterburner event) at the 013 venue in Tilburg, Holland. Roadburn Festival 2013 Pre-sales start Thursday, 4 October 2012 at 20:30 CET.

Roadburn 2013: Pilgrim Added to Lineup

Posted in Whathaveyou on August 27th, 2012 by JJ Koczan

The good news continues to pour in from the Netherlands. This time, it’s hotter-than-hell Rhode Island youngins Pilgrim added to the Roadburn bill. They’ll be at SHoD this weekend as well, so maybe I’ll just have to say congrats to The Wizard in person. Way to go, gents.

Rhode Island’s Doom Disciples Pilgrim To Bring Misery To Roadburn 2013

We’re excited to announce that Pilgrim will be appearing at Roadburn Festival 2013 on Thursday, April 18th at the 013 venue in Tilburg, Holland.

Remember the time when the great bands of the Seventies—Wishbone Ash, Rainbow and Led Zeppelin, to name but a few—wrote their tunes around mythical stories involving swords, sorcery and magic? For those of us who are hungry for epic music that tells of majestic tales, look for the Misery Wizard (Metal Blade), the debut long-player from Rhode Island’s disciples of doom, Pilgrim!

The trio of drummer Krolg, the Slayer of Man, bassist the Soothsayer and guitarist / singer the Wizard combine the chest-caving sounds of Pentagram and the mountain-moving tempos of Reverend Bizarre and tie it all together under the spiritual guidance of the grand masters of doom, Black Sabbath. Deep within the thick sonic walls, listeners can hear the Wizard tell tales about ancient beings from the sky, timeless heroes and the eponymous Misery Wizard.

Gather ‘round at the 2013 Roadburn Festival and be immersed in the power and might of Pilgrim and the Misery Wizard!

Roadburn Festival 2013 will run for four days from Thursday, April 18th to Sunday, April 21st, 2013 (the traditional Afterburner event) at the 013 venue in Tilburg, Holland.

Roadburn 2013: Teeth of the Sea Added to the Lineup

Posted in Whathaveyou on August 20th, 2012 by JJ Koczan

The annual adventure known as Roadburn continues to take shape, this time with British outfit Teeth of the Sea joining the lineup. They’ll apparently have a new album out before the fest gets underway next April, but I figured I’d include a video in the meantime, just in case the name’s not immediately familiar. Dig:

Teeth of the Sea To Play at Roadburn Festival 2013

Roadburn’s excited to announce that UK’s most adventurous and intrepid psychedelic rock outfit Teeth of the Sea has been confirmed for Roadburn Festival 2013 on Saturday, April 20th at the 013 venue in Tilburg, Holland.

Taking inspiration from sources as disparate as the 70s French prog of Heldon, the soundtracks of Angelo Badalamenti, the white-noise-shamanism of Skullflower and the psych-punk vortex of Chrome, London’s Teeth of the Sea marry searing electronics, torrential riffage and cinematic atmospherics, in the process mapping out a mind-melting path between the garage and the cosmos.

Obsessions with science-fiction, trash culture and heavy amplification coalesced in style around their two albums thus far for Rocket Recordings, 2009’s Orphaned By The Ocean and 2010’s Your Mercury; reviewing the latter, Julian Cope asserted that Teeth Of The Sea ‘operate entirely within their own mythological mind map, their own specific & singular Weltanshauung. Epiphany after epiphany, brothers’n’sisters, that’s the shameless method this band deploys in order to enslave our minds.’

Teeth Of The Sea’s third album will be released on Rocket Recordings in early 2013, just in time for the band to lay waste to Roadburn. It’s destined to see them venturing yet further into unchartered realms of earth-shaking intensity and kaleidoscopic noise.

Roadburn Festival 2013 will run for four days from Thursday, April 18th to Sunday, April 21st, 2013 (the traditional Afterburner event) at the 013 venue in Tilburg, Holland.

Castle Added to Roadburn 2013; New Video Unveiled

Posted in Whathaveyou on August 15th, 2012 by JJ Koczan

Always diverse, always intriguing, the Roadburn lineup continues to expand its horizons and those of anyone lucky enough to get tickets. Word just came down the wire of San Franciscan metallers Castle being added. Check it out below, followed by their new video for the song “Corpse Candles” from their Van Records sophomore outing, Blacklands. Right on:

San Francisco’s Castle bringing “true” metal to Roadburn 2013

Like your metal chunky? Full of old-school doomy riffs? So do we! That’s why we’re really happy to announce that San Francisco’s metal juggernaut Castle have been confirmed for the Roadburn festival on Thursday, April 18th at the 013 venue in Tilburg, Holland.

Signed to Ván Records, Castle have created quite a buzz with their energetic live shows and their extremely well-reviewed albums “In Witch Order” and “Blacklands”. The lineup is a classic power trio comprised of bassist/vocalist Elizabeth Blackwell, guitarist (and occasional vocalist) Mat Davis and drummer Al McCartney. Their churning, roiling metal is filled with intensely catchy riffs framed by memorable songwriting and delivered with gusto and true metal panache.

Mostly delving into mid-tempo, heavy headbanging territory, Castle are anything but an anachronistic throwback band. Instead, they take the classic sound of doomy metal and infuse it with creativity and relentless drive to create a vital and unstoppable onslaught of chunky riffs, catchy hooks and bludgeoning energy that reminds us of the metal we grew up worshipping, but in an undeniably contemporary way.

Celebrate the pure joy of real metal with Castle at the Roadburn festival, you will find us in the front row headbanging like we used to do in our bedrooms when we were 13!
