Earth Messiah Sign to Argonauta Records; Debut Full-Length Coming Soon

Posted in Whathaveyou on March 22nd, 2018 by JJ Koczan

Seems to me that if you’re a relatively new band looking to get attention with your first demo, calling it something like Nocturnal Thoughtgrinder might not be a bad way to go. One could argue it worked well enough for Swedish three-piece Earth Messiah, who’ve signed to ever-expanding Italian imprint Argonauta Records for the release of their soon-to-be-recorded-and-much-more-generically-named debut album, Ouroboros. You can stream the current two-tracker now at the bottom of this post, and to my ears it brings to mind some of the burl of pre-social media European heavy, what groups like Mustasch were up to around 2002-2003. It’s got its own edge, to be sure, but there’s a touch of that classic stoner rock vibe and I’ll be darned if the riff to “Always Remember” doesn’t feel right out of the Kyuss playbook. Nothing wrong with that.

The PR wire made the thing official:

ARGONAUT RECORDS- EARTH MESSIAH, new deal

We’re thrilled to welcome in the family Swedish Stoner Rocker trio EARTH MESSIAH.

EARTH MESSIAH born in 2017, when long time stoner fans Mathias Helgesson (Unhealth, Ex Lawgiver) and Patrik Orrmén (ex Fuzztrated, ex Rhubarb Blues Band) met up to write some tunes together. Things hit off directly, and the tracks seemed to come naturally as soon as the two played together.

With Mathias strong songwriting and the pounding drive of Patriks drums in place, the search began for more band members who shared their mutual vision. After trying out some bass players and vocalists, it was decided that Mathias vocals was more fitting for their style. In early 2018 they met up with Marcus Hedkvist (From Soil, ex Eskatologia) and it was fuzz at first sight, thus completing the power trio.

The band says: “We’re very excited to sign to the Argonauta roster! We feel like we’re in great company and that this will be a good platform to reach out with our music. We’re right now doing preproduction demos for the upcoming album “Ourobouros” – and we feel that we have a strong 8 track album which is likely to create a buzz for you listeners! Stay tuned for blues fueled stoner rock greatness!”

The two track demo “Nocturnal Thoughtgrinder was recorded in late 2017, and rendered in lots of positive feedback and interest in the band. They are currently recording the debut album “Ourobouros”. Stay tuned kids!

Ruby the Hatchet Reissuing Debut LP Ouroboros in April

It would seem Philly heavy psych rockers Ruby the Hatchet and I share an enduring affection for the artwork of Adam Burke. Also for reverb. The forthcoming vinyl pressing of their 2012 debut album, Ouroboros, would seem to offer plenty of both while also giving a glimpse to those who came on board after they signed to Tee Pee and released Valley of the Snake (review here) last year where they’re coming from. Not technically a reissue, since it’s the first vinyl pressing, but if you want to quibble semantics, do it up. The comment section is below. By all means, take me to task.

Kind of bothers me that I’ve yet to see this band live. Gotta see if I can work on that this year at some point.

The PR wire has news it would like to share:

RUBY THE HATCHET: Debut Album ‘Ouroboros’ to See Deluxe LP Release April 29

Psychedelic Philly Force’s First Full-Length Pressed to Physical Format

Philadelphia psych-metal band RUBY THE HATCHET will see its debut album, Ouroboros, issued on deluxe LP April 29 via RUR Records / Outer Battery. Recorded three years prior to the group’s celebrated Tee Pee Records debut, Valley of the Snake, the 2012 digital-only release — now presented for the first time on any physical format — offers insight into RUBY THE HATCHET’s formative years and blues-based hard rock sound. The limited edition colored vinyl LP is available to pre-order now at this location.

Ouroboros features RUBY THE HATCHET founding members Jillian Taylor (vocals), Johnny Scarps (guitar), Owen Stewart (drums) and Mike Parise (bass). The nine song release was recorded at Retro City Studios in Germantown, PA by audio-engineer Joe Boldizar with assistance from Barry Knob and Sean Hur. Now a full-time member, organist Hur makes his RTH debut here on the tracks “The Lean,” “Holy Father,” and “Good God Damn.” Released on the heels of the band’s self-titled debut EP and written mostly as a three-piece (Taylor, Scarps and Stewart), Ouroboros explores what would be the next realm for the band – playing with harmony, tone and overall style.

“It has been a long time coming and we are beyond excited that after four years our first album is getting a proper vinyl pressing,” comments Taylor. “Ouroboros holds a lot of nostalgia for us and is a fan favorite. This album shows our blues and classic rock beginnings and it is also where organ enters the soundscape, shaping our sound from this point on.”

Track listing:
1.) Taking Sides
2.) Black Tongue
3.) Can’t Get Him Away
4.) Strange Hold
5.) The Lean
6.) Holy Father
7.) Wicked Ones
8.) Nowhere
9.) Good God Damn

In addition to Jillian Taylor, RUBY THE HATCHET features Johnny Scarps (guitar), Lake Muir (bass), Owen Stewart (drums) and Sean Hur (organ).
