Mondo Generator Announce Massive European Tour

Posted in Whathaveyou on September 24th, 2019 by JJ Koczan

mondo generator

I guess the underlying message here is to keep an eye out for news of a new Mondo Generator album. I know that when the Nick Oliveri-fronted three-piece signed to Heavy Psych Sounds back in June, it was specifically with the label’s booking wing for European representation, and hey, that’s cool. But would Oliveri, guitarist Mike Pygmie (also John Garcia) and drummer Mike Amster (also Nebula, ex-Blaak Heat, etc.) really go on tour for nearly a month and a half without a record to support? There have already been a steady stream of Oliveri-related offerings through Heavy Psych Sounds over the last couple years, and certainly the Italian imprint has its fair share of CA desert bands under its banner at this point in Brant BjorkYawning ManNebulaFatso Jetson, etc., so yeah. I’ll just say that when and if the press release comes in between now and, let’s say, January, I’m going to take credit for having called it ahead of time.

Here are the tour dates from the PR wire. There are many of them:

Desertfest Berlin 2019: Om, Wovenhand, Kikagaku Moyo, Wino, Naxatras & More Added

Posted in Whathaveyou on November 30th, 2018 by JJ Koczan

desertfest berlin 2019 banner

Desertfest Berlin 2019, Desertfest London 2019 and the first-ever Desertfest New York have all had lineup announcements this week. That’s by no means a little bit of Desertfest, but of course the Berlin lineup remains a beast unto itself. Along with sharing the likes of headliners Om and Wovenhand and Mondo Generator, etc., Berlin welcomes Wino back to Europe with an acoustic set as well as Kakagaku Moyo from Japan — who’ll just happen to be in the same building as Earthless, with whom they’ve jammed live before and might well again. With Naxatras fulfilling the great Greek psychedelic prophecy and Long Distance Calling rounding out this second announcement, Desertfest Berlin 2019 remains a landmark that, like its London counterpart, has only continued to become more expansive and encompassing.

To wit:

desertfest berlin 2019 new poster

OM ++ WOVENHAND ++ LONG DISTANCE CALLING ++ KIKAGAKU MOYO ++ MONDO GENERATOR ++ WINO ++ NICK OLIVERI ++ NAXATRAS confirmed for Desertfest Berlin 2019!!!

Desert rockers, we are psyched to reveal new names for our 8th edition in the capitol of Germany, Berlin. While our annual festival already unveiled highclass acts such as J Mascis’ Witch, Colour Haze, All Them Witches, Earthless and many more, today DesertFest Berlin pursues the announcements of 8 further and more than exciting bands which have been added to the eclectic 2019 line-up!

Formed by the rhythm section of our all beloved Sleep, legendary OM will make their return to Europe! It’s been a long time since the band released their last album ‘Advaitic Songs’ back in 2012, but your wait and hunger to experience the band live is finally over: OM are going to hypnotize the entire ARENA with their unique, one and only omvibrating sounds!

Bringing you the probably best Americana and Alternative Country tunes you can get, DESERTFEST BERLIN is thrilled to welcome Wovenhand (official) in 2019! Led by former 16 Horsepower frontman David Eugene, WOVENHAND gave the real birth to mix folk, gospel and rock ‘n roll. Expect a unique and very special live show!

Long Distance Calling have always roamed on unexplored territory. Their timeless, atmospheric instrumental rock not only inspires traditionalists with a penchant for guitars, vinyl and compact discs, but without their epic records even no serious streaming playlist is complete. At DESERTFEST BERLIN 2019, the band will make us forget about the digital world. They will transfer us into the real world of finest instrumental rock sounds, only an act like LONG DISTANCE CALLING could ever create!

DESERTFEST BERLIN will also bring back Scott “Wino” Weinrich to Europe! The St. Vitus frontman will be performing a very special acoustic set at the 8th festival edition in Berlin. With his solo project of the dark rock till Outlaw Country tunes alongside rare cover versions, you may never know what WINO will be playing live on stage, but you can be sure: This legend will provide a live appearance we won’t forget too fast!

Punk and metal hybrid unit from Los Angeles, Mondo Generator, fronted and formed by Nick Oliveri (QOTSA, Dwarves, Bloodclot, Kyuss) is going to break loose with the DESERTFEST BERLIN crowd next year. Since the band is no stranger to the Desertfest’s family, you know what to expect, sweaty T-shirts in crazy pits included!

And while we got him in Berlin already, the DESERTFEST BERLIN crew invited Mr. Nick Oliveri to put on his infamous DEATH ACOUSTIC set! Double-action by the one & only NICK OLIVERI, who not only released his critically acclaimed ‘N.O. Hits At All’-series with HEAVY PSYCH SOUNDS over the past few months, but will be also bringing his N.O Hits At All live and in death acoustic manners on stage! Get ready for some fun, desert rockers!

Last but not least, DESERTFEST BERLIN is proud to welcome two of the hottest irons the current underground rock scene has to offer: Japanese up & coming Kikagaku Moyo as well as Naxatras round up today’s second band announcement! They balance heavy, crushing jams with softer, more contemplative moments: Tokyo-based KIKAGAKU MOYO, your new favorite psychedelic rock band, perfectly incorporates the elements of Krautrock, Indian ragas and acid folk, currently and well-deserved selling out one venue after the next! The Greek power trio NAXATRAS delivers a trippy journey to the very roots of the psychedelic sound, paying tribute to rock titans such as Pink Floyd and Hawkwind, doom rock overlords Black Sabbath, as well as funk pioneers Funkadelic or legendary guitar-hero Jimi Hendrix. The relentless touring activity of the band, with recent sold out shows all over Europe, put NAXATRAS once and for all on the map as one of the biggest hopes of European psychedelic music!

Friends, we hope you dig this new killer announcement as much as we do! Desertfest Berlin 2019 will take place between May 3rd – 5th 2019 at the riverside in the heart of Berlin, the ARENA BERLIN. The festival will not only provide a new sound-and payment-system on the ground, but also more space PLUS a chillout- and live zone on the ‘Hoppetosse’ boat! Better be quick to start your trip to Berlin, as you don’t want to miss this amazing line-up and witness one of the best festival editions you have ever been to!

Planet Desert Rock Weekend Announces Lineup with John Garcia, Wino, Wo Fat, Sasquatch and More

Posted in Whathaveyou on October 17th, 2018 by JJ Koczan

planet desert rock weekend john garcia

Last week, John Garcia and the Band of Gold announced that a lone US appearance would take place in Las Vegas on Nov. 29. As presented by Vegas Rock Revolution, that show will be the first of a three-evening event called the Planet Desert Rock Weekend, also featuring headlining spots from Scott “Wino” Weinrich and Texas fuzz-blues stalwarts Wo Fat, as well as support from the likes of House of Broken PromisesFreedom HawkSasquatchPowered Wig MachineValley of the SunThe Heavy Eyes, and so on. The venue changes each night, but there’s no question what’s happening here: It’s a festival.

Look. I can’t tell you how to live your life. Well, I could — eat right, try to get some exercise, love everybody, etc. — but I can’t tell you where to go on any given day. Even aside from this being a rare chance to catch John Garcia in the States, this lineup is pretty much unfuckwithable. Vegas may be known as the land of Psycho, but without a doubt, Planet Desert Rock is looking to make an impact of its own in underground heavy. If you were there to see it, I can’t imagine you’d have regrets later.

Awesome posters by Joey Rudell, full lineup and info follow, courtesy of the fest’s social medias:

Planet Desert Rock Weekend

A Desert Rock Weekend Experience of amazing music from all over the country. Each band hand selected to ensure amazing relevant lineups daily. No fillers just got music.

3 nights of amazing Heavy Rock lineups

Night 1 starts off with legendary vocalist John Garcia of Kyuss. This is a exclusive evening that has never happened before. He will be singing songs from all his bands including Kyuss, Unida (Arthur Seay on guitar) , Hermano (Dave Angstrom on guitar) and Slo Burn (Chris Hale on Guitar). Former Kyuss bandmate Nick Oliveri will also be playing a song or two with John. Luna Sol featuring Angstrom also on the bill as well as Nick Oliveri and Arthur Seay’s Death in Pretty Wrapping with Unida/House of Broken Promises bandmate Mike Cancino on drums. This will be John Garcia only show in the U.S. in 2018. Vinyl at Hard Rock Casino is home to this very special one time event Thursday night.

Night 2 The Bunkhouse Saloon in Downtown Las Vegas hosts headliner Scott “Wino” Weinrich. Longtime heavy rock vocalist with such iconic underground bands as The Obsessed, Spirit Caravan , Saint Vitus and Shrinebuilder. Also joining on the bill will be heavy rock veterans Valley of the Sun who is rising from the ashes and gearing up for a big 2019 with a new album. The Heavy Eyes comes in from blues town Memphis with their psychedelic bluesy rock style and their own very unique catchy sound. House of Broken Promises featuring Arthur Seay and Mike Cancino of Unida fame will be representing Indio CA with riff rocking madness. War Cloud out of Oakland revs up with a late 70s/early 80s high energy styled metal/rock. King Chiefs (formerly Chiefs) gives a 90s grunge era style to this stacked lineup.

Night 3 is highlighted by a rare west coast appearance by Wo-Fat out of Dallas Texas. This power trio has played all over the world at many of the top festivals including DesertFest. Thick Bluesy psychedelic explosion of heavy rock would be a start to describing their incredible sound. World travelled Sasquatch joins the party as one of the premier bands poised for next level breakthrough. Freedom Hawk flies over from Virginia Beach bringing with them catchy rocking songs with duel guitar action. One of the most consistent bands in the stoner rock genre. Powered Wig Machine gets its motor running again after a little layoff as Wayne and Joey Rudell of Fuzz Evil play the epitome of desert rock style blended with retro rock influences. Blackwulf flies down from Oakland on the heals of their last highly acclaimed album which featured former Pentagram member Geoff O’Keefe. Heavy riff rocking live band. Red Desert makes a special appearance coming all the way from Minnesota as they prepare for a big 2019 with a new album/EP. Desert rock sound blended with stoner and doom. Beauty Bar downtown on Fremont street is home to this all star lineup.

We are very proud of these lineups and will only have a limited amount of tickets to sale as each of the last 2 locations have only room from 270 or so……snag those tickets as this is first come first serve. Cool vibe and stacked lineups will be happening each and every night. Our hopes is to develop this into something heavy rock bands and fans can flourish in for future shows. See you soon !

John Garcia & The Band of Gold Announce Exclusive US Appearance

Posted in Whathaveyou on October 11th, 2018 by JJ Koczan

john garcia

He’s doing one US gig and he’s making it count. John Garcia will appear with his Band of Gold on Nov. 29 on the Vinyl stage at the Hard Rock in Las Vegas. He did a show in Calgary earlier this year, but so far as I know, this is it for US appearances for the time being. Joining desert rock’s most pivotal frontman are Death in Pretty Wrapping, featuring Garcia‘s Unida bandmate Arthur Seay, and Luna Sol, with Garcia‘s Hermano bandmate David Angstrom, as well as Garcia‘s former Kyuss/Vista Chino bandmate, Nick Oliveri.

It’s set to be a career-spanning show, as Garcia‘s former bandmates will join him on stage for songs from their respective outfits — Garcia notes in the video below that members of Slo Burn will be on hand for the occasion as well — and one can also expect new tunes from John Garcia and the Band of Gold, whose debut album is now completed and expected to release sometime soon on Napalm Records. Will it be out in time for this show? I doubt it, but probably concurrent to Garcia‘s impending European stint early next year. If you’ll recall, that run was rescheduled to Jan./Feb. to allow for their studio time. If the photo of Garcia and Kyuss producer Chris Goss (also Masters of Reality) posted on social media means they collaborated on the album, then yeah, I’d call that worth putting off some shows. Working toward the greater good, and all that.

The show is presented by Vegas Rock Revolution and the following came down the PR wire:

john garcia show poster

John Garcia & The Band of Gold Announce Special Las Vegas Show

Desert Rock Master John Garcia & The Band of Gold have announced a special once in a lifetime show, set to take place on Thursday November 29th in Las Vegas, NV at Vinyl in The Hard Rock Hotel & Casino. The Band of Gold features (Ehren Groban on Guitar, Mike Pygmie on Bassand Greg Saenz on drums). This will be the band’s only North American appearance this year and will be a night, not to be missed.

Support on this special evening will come from bands that have a played a role in Garcia’s legendary career including Nick Oliveri, Luna Sol (featuring Dave Angstrom of Hermano) and Death in Pretty Wrapping (featuring Arthur Seay of Unida). Fans can also expect to see additional special guests from Garcia’s bands from over the years.

All of the band’s and Garcia’s friends cannot wait to play this show:

“Johnny rocks. All of his band’s rock. We all know that he’s a monster …but having John as a friend is really amazing to me. He’s such a great guy, father, husband, bandmate and brother. His vocals rock me to the core …they always have. I can’t wait to hang and share the stage with Johnny and the onslaught of monstrous players and characters joining forces in Vegas on Nov 29th. It’s going to be a throw down, for sure…my ears are already ringing. Let’s bring the rock!” says Dave Angstrom

Stay tuned for more news from John Garcia & The Band of Gold, and see if you can begin to the put the puzzle together for yourself…

Nick Oliveri Announces Oct. 12 Release for N.O. Hits at All Vol. 5

Posted in Whathaveyou on July 13th, 2018 by JJ Koczan

nick oliveri

Mondo Generator frontman and dude-who’s-been-in-more-bands-than-I-can-count-and-yes-that-includes-Kyuss Nick Oliveri has set an Oct. 12 release for N.O. Hits at All Vol. 5 through Heavy Psych Sounds. All reports — and by that I mean the PR wire info below, make no mistake — point to this being the last in the series of Oliverrare tracks and guest spots and whatnots, though I’d have sworn the same thing was said about Vol. 4, so who the hell knows? If Oliveri was at all predictable, he probably wouldn’t have wound up with enough material to do a five-part series of rare tracks in the first place. So there.

For what it’s worth, I still think Heavy Psych Sounds should compile the whole series into a boxed set. Even if it’s just the five CDs bundled together in a cardboard slipcase that can go on the shelf, that’d work. I don’t think I’ve heard any plans in that regard, but again, you never really know what you’re going to get. That’s kind of the whole point.

PR wire info follows:

nick oliveri no hits at all vol 5

Nick Oliveri Announces ‘Death Acoustic’ European Tour Dates

Posted in Whathaveyou on June 26th, 2018 by JJ Koczan

nick oliveri

You could probably count on one hand the number of people on the planet who could call a solo-project ‘Death Acoustic’ and get away with it. Nick Oliveri is one of them, clearly. The Mondo Generator frontman/Dwarves bassist whose tenure in Kyuss and Queens of the Stone Age has assured him a permanent place in the hearts of desert-worshipers worldwide will head back to Europe next month for a new acoustic tour put together by Heavy Psych Sounds. That same booking agency’s label wing recently released the four-part N.O. Hits at All series of lost tracks, off-album cuts and previously unissued takes from Oliveri, whose penchant for onstage intensity is only mirrored all the more his unwillingness to compromise on the ‘Death’ part when it comes to playing unplugged.

Shows start July 23, as per the PR wire:

NICK OLIVERI announces “Death Acoustic” European summer tour

NICK OLIVERI finally returns to Europe this summer, to bring his solo project “Death Acoustic” live on stage again!

There are not many words needed to introduce this living rock legend: Nick Steven Oliveri is an American musician from Palm Desert, California. He plays the bass guitar, acoustic and electric guitar, and is a vocalist. Nick is most widely known as the bassist of Kyuss, Queens of the Stone Age and the Dwarves, and has also performed with the reunited Kyuss under the names Kyuss Lives! as well as in Vista Chino. As a bandleader, his main project is called Mondo Generator, a punk/metal hybrid formed back in 1997.

NICK OLIVERI has started the fruitful collaboration with Heavy Psych Sounds Records, who took care of releasing his latest records such as the highly acclaimed ‘No Hits At All’ series over the last years, and from now on will be also handling the booking of his unique and excellent live shows! This summer, NICK OLIVERI will finally return back to Europe and will present his Acoustic solo project: The mighty “DEATH ACOUSTIC” where he will play songs from his past projects and original ones! Excited to come back to Europe and to bring his solo project live on stage again, make sure to catch him on the following dates, presented by Heavy Psych Sounds Records & Booking:

Heavy Psych Sounds Announces Vol. III Label Sampler

Posted in Whathaveyou on February 7th, 2018 by JJ Koczan

You gotta watch out for these. They’re sneaky. Label samplers can be tricky in general — sometimes it’s nothing but rehashed tracks from years ago with one or two new songs from a band somebody’s trying to push, but with Heavy Psych Sounds, their annual sampler series has been a way of sneaking new tracks out for first public showcases. Last year, new Black Rainbows showed up, and sure enough they appear here as well, and there also seems to be some new stuff from The Freeks included, which as far as I’m concerned is reason enough on its own to chase the thing down. Also Tons will have a track on there ahead of their album release in April, and new Killer Boogie, so yeah, plenty to grab onto, and even the stuff that’s already out — Mother Engine, Fvzz Popvli, The Lords of Altamont, Nick Oliveri — is all still current, and righteous. That “Kyuss Dies” song is hilarious.

Full tracklisting follows here, courtesy of the PR wire:

Nick Oliveri: Preorders for N.O. Hits at All Vol. 4 Start Dec. 5

Posted in Whathaveyou on November 28th, 2017 by JJ Koczan

Though it’s barely been a month since the release of Nick Oliveri‘s N.O. Hits at All Vol. 3 (review here), the former Kyuss and Queens of the Stone Age bassist has set a Feb. 23 issue date for the next and final installment in what’s apparently a four-part series. Preorders are set to begin on Dec. 5 through Heavy Psych Sounds, the Italian imprint that’s put out each of the collections over the course of this year, and the last one will boast tracks from Oliveri‘s acoustic incarnation, his solo band The Uncontrollable, and The Dwarves, among others.

One can only wonder when the limited edition comp boxed set might be set to land. Haven’t heard anything about one in the works, but it seems like a prime opportunity for such a thing, even if they only make a couple. Something to chew on.

And while we’re chewing:
