Maryland Doom Fest 2024 Announced Full Schedule and Timetable

Posted in Whathaveyou on January 24th, 2024 by JJ Koczan

Look at the blue text below and you know what you’re gonna see? Yes, a whole lot of skull emojis. Like a lot. But it happens that each individual one corresponds to a demonstration of the labor of love and community that is the Maryland Doom Festival. From Abel Blood through Zekiah, Maryland Doom Fest 2024 celebrates its 10th anniversary edition with its standard sans-bullshit glut of heavy. Once more the Frederick-based event looks your square in the eye, drops for absolutely immersive days on you and asks if you’re up for it. Well, are ya?

I’m not sure what my summer travel plans are yet — this and Freak Valley have overlapped the last couple years for me — but it’s been since 2019 that I was last down there and oh I’d be so eager to show up and have the three or four people who recognize me (and thus make it feel like an absolute family experience; love love love everywhere you go down there) quietly think to themselves I’ve gotten older and fatter en route to obliterating myself with volume for about 96 hours straight. Fuck. King. A.

Oh, and I hear Thunderbird Divine have new stuff in the works and it’s amazing. So that’s a thing too.

Social media had it like this:

Maryland Doom Fest 2024 Announces Full Lineup for 10th Anniversary Edition

Posted in Whathaveyou on November 1st, 2023 by JJ Koczan

maryland doom fest 2024

With headlining performances slated from a soon-to-retire Cirith Ungol, noise crushers Whores., mostly-local melodic heavy proggers MythosphereSwitchblade JesusConclaveTen Ton Slug (from Ireland; I got to see them one time; way burly; they’ll do well in Frederick), and plenty of other returning acts and newcomers alike, the lineup for Maryland Doom Fest 2024 could hardly be more appropriate a celebration of the annual Chesapeake gathering’s 10th anniversary. Based in Frederick, the four-day ultra-consuming sensory assault of volume will once again take place at Cafe 611 and Olde Mother Brewing, and if you’ve never been, I’ll tell you outright there’s nothing quite like it.

I mean that. Maryland Doom Fest goes harder than the average festival. A day might start at 1PM and not end until 2AM. And now more than ever, as the fest has grown with the two venues running alongside each other, the bill is packed. I think this year was 50 bands? Well, they’ve got 52 for 2024, and while next June is a while out, there’s a tradition to uphold of Halloween announcements, and festival honcho JB Matson (Bloodshot, War InjunOutside Truth, etc.) pays tribute to his regulars — Shadow WitchBailjackThunderbird Divine, Thousand Vision Mist (congratulations to Danny Kenyon of Thousand Vision Mist on recently kicking cancer’s ass), among others here — while also giving showcase to outfits like Pyre FyreO Zorn! (whose very moniker heralds weirdness), WyndRider and more.

Congrats to Matson and all at Maryland Doom Fest on their 10th anniversary. To do something of this scope once is a lot. To do it across 10 years, well, aside from being fucking crazy, it’s also deeply admirable.

The aforementioned announcement — brief as ever; the poster lands heavy enough to cover any lack of verbiage — follows, courtesy of socials. Ticket link is there too:

The Obelisk Questionnaire: Mark Cruikshank of Zentagram

Posted in Questionnaire on July 7th, 2023 by JJ Koczan

Mark Cruikshank of Zentagram

The Obelisk Questionnaire is a series of open questions intended to give the answerer an opportunity to explore these ideas and stories from their life as deeply as they choose. Answers can be short or long, and that reveals something in itself, but the most important factor is honesty.

Based on the Proust Questionnaire, the goal over time is to show a diverse range of perspectives as those who take part bring their own points of view to answering the same questions. To see all The Obelisk Questionnaire posts, click here.

Thank you for reading and thanks to all who participate.

The Obelisk Questionnaire: Mark Cruikshank of Zentagram

How do you define what you do and how did you come to do it?

Event Producer. Of course, “concert promoter” is far more common a term but I feel like a lot of us do a whole lot more than just promote shows.

Describe your first musical memory.

Seeing Captain and Tennille in Hawaii in the mid ’70s. I was a big fan. I was probably 9.

Describe your best musical memory to date.

There’s no easy way to answer this one. So many to choose from. Two weekends in a row at the Oakland Coliseum with my older brother. Can’t remember which one was first but one weekend was Van Halen on the Fair Warning tour and the other weekend was Rush on the Moving Pictures tour.

When was a time when a firmly held belief was tested?

Pretty much every day I spent as junkie throughout most of the ’90s.

Where do you feel artistic progression leads?

On a personal level, it leads to being able to express myself without having to actually talk to people.

From a more worldly perspective, I think it’s mostly the same thing. People need to express themselves in ways that don’t involve superficial conversations at work, or phony smiles at your local convenience store. Pretty sure humans were communicating artistically before they were communicating vocally.

How do you define success?

Success to me, is doing something intentionally and being satisfied with the end result.

What is something you have seen that you wish you hadn’t?

I’ve seen quite a few OD’s, a shooting death and a stabbing death. I could do without those memories.

Describe something you haven’t created yet that you’d like to create.

A show that JJ will come to.

What do you believe is the most essential function of art?

Self-expression.

Something non-musical that you’re looking forward to?

I’m looking forward to my girlfriend coming home tonight and telling me about her day. I’m looking forward to eating dinner with her. I’m looking forward to all four of our cats driving us crazy all night.

Maryland Doom Fest 2023 Announces Lineup

Posted in Whathaveyou on October 31st, 2022 by JJ Koczan

It’s a big ‘un. And if you’re like me, there are a couple names that stick out from the poster below, particularly Earthride and The Skull. Both are tribute sets, of course. The Skull frontman Eric Wagner passed away in 2021 after complications from a covid-19 infection and the loss of Earthride‘s Dave Sherman just a couple months ago continues to be keenly felt in and beyond the confines of the scene he called home. Karl Agell (ex-C.O.C.) will step in for The Skull, while Scott Angelacos of Hollow Leg is set to front a rotating cast of players for Earthride. You would be hard-pressed to find a more fitting occasion for honoring one’s own, except perhaps this gig in a couple weeks.

Plenty of familiar, returning acts as well as newcomers. Hippie Death Cult and will travel from the Pacific Northwest, Switchblade Jesus and Doomstress make an appearance (not the first for either) from Texas, and Red Mesa come straight out of the capital-‘desert’ Desert. Meanwhile, Faith in Jane, Black Lung, Bloodshot, Mangog, Mythosphere, Thonian Horde, Spiral Grave and plenty of others represent the Maryland home team, High Leaf and Thunderbird Divine trip down from Philly, Curse the Son (CT) and Guhts (NY) come from farther north, Hollow Leg make the trip out from Florida, and Lo-Pan, Doctor Smoke and Brimstone Coven head over from the Midwest. That’s just off the top of my head. I’m not sure there’s ever been a MDDF pulling so many bands from different parts of the country, though of course international bands have featured in the past as well.

There are always some shakeup between the first announcement and the final lineup, but so far so good here. Any way it works out, Maryland Doom Fest has nothing to prove at this point. Guaranteed banger.

Here’s the poster (oy) and the lineup, the latter in alphabetical order:

Maryland Doom Fest 2022 Announces Lineup

Posted in Whathaveyou on December 31st, 2021 by JJ Koczan

maryland-doom-fest-2022-logo

As suspected, the lineup announcement for the 2022 Maryland Doom Fest is relatively short on fluff. No flowery descriptions of the acts involved, no hype about how important it is to get together in these times of plague and support the community, the underground, whatever it is. That’s all true enough, but as ever, Maryland Doom Fest is putting the name out there for you to see, and if you know, you know. If you’re a part of that family down there in Frederick, you’ve already got your calendar marked. This is who’ll be at the reunion.

And to that, with bands like Horehound, Thunderbird Divine, Caustic Casanova, fest-organizer JB Matson‘s own Bloodshot, Faith in Jane, ZED, Helgamite, Shadow Witch, The Age of Truth, Apostle of Solitude, Horseburner, Dead East Garden, Strange Highways and Foghound on the bill, this one will no doubt feel like a reunion in no small part. These acts and some of the others as well have shared MDDF bills in the past, and indeed, some were included in the announcement for January’s Doom Hawg Day as well, as was speculated. Still cool to see some of those returning coming across the country to do it, though, be it ZED or Formula 400.

Set for June 23-26 at Cafe 611 and Olde Mother Brewing in Frederick, MD, and of course subject to some changes between now and June, the lineup for Maryland Doom Fest 2022 is as follows:

Doom Hawg Day 2022 Lineup Announced for Jan. 22

Posted in Whathaveyou on December 31st, 2021 by JJ Koczan

No time like the present, one supposes, for Maryland Doom Fest to lay out its plans for 2022. The lineup for the festival proper — which was held this year over the course of Halloween weekend and, much to its credit, didn’t seem to be a super-spreader event — will be announced later today, as a kind of New Year’s piss-off-2021/celebrate-2022, hopeful-future-despite-so-much-dystopia riff-led daydream, or at very least a long list of bands and probably a poster. As preface for that, organizer JB Matson has put out word of a return of the all-dayer Doom Hawg Day for next month as well.

To be held Jan. 22, which is a Saturday, Doom Hawg Day 2022 boasts no fewer than nine bands in its lineup — and it starts at 5PM! — and recognizable headliners in Mangog and The Age of Truth, the former from Baltimore, the latter imports from Philadelphia but certainly well at home in Frederick, Maryland, too. Both are veterans of the Maryland Doom Fest, and along with a solo set from Dee Calhoun (Spiral Grave, etc.), Doom Hawg Day will welcome Future Projektor, Atomic Motel, Bloodshot, Gallowglas, High Noon Kahuna and 2 Screws Loose.

Groundhog Day itself, of course, is Feb. 2, and while I doubt Cafe 611 has any celebrations in the works for that particular asinine ritual, Doom Hawg Day has been going for a few years now. I wouldn’t be surprised to have some of these acts show up in the Maryland Doom Fest announcement either, which of course one is looking forward to, and I wouldn’t be surprised if that lineup reveal looked a lot like this one, only with a longer list of bands. Maryland Doom Fest has never been one to skirt around the point of the thing.

Unlike some of us, I guess.

Maryland Doom Fest 2021 Announces Lineup

Posted in Whathaveyou on April 22nd, 2021 by JJ Koczan

Maryland Doom Fest 2021 is set for Halloween Weekend, Oct. 28-31, in Frederick, Maryland. Some of the acts on the newly announced bill are carryovers from the first-delayed-then-canceled 2020 edition — among them SasquatchWorshipper, and so on — but it’s worth noting that among those and others, the likes of The Age of Truth will have a new record out by this Fall, and pre-pandemic, Boozewa didn’t even exist. So yes, things have changed.

For further proof of the festival’s stylistic branching out — and with this many bands, they’d just have have to — you’ll note the departure in the poster art from the fest-standard purple toward a greater range of color. The music they’re pushing is likewise broader in palette, and to think of seeing the likes of Howling Giant and Revvnant alongside Arduini/BalichOmen Stones, and Place of Skulls is an encouraging thought indeed. This even was much-missed last year.

Expect a time-table sooner than later, as organizer JB Matson doesn’t screw around when it comes to that kind of thing. The lineup announcement — short and sweet, as ever — is further proof of same.

I don’t know what the world’s gonna look like come Halloween, but I know damn well this is one reason I’m glad I got that vaccine.

[UPDATE 04/30: Black Road and Vessel of Light can’t make it. Lo-Pan and When the Deadbolt Breaks have been added. If there are any further changes, I’ll probably just make a new post.]

Maryland Doom Fest 2020 Canceled

Posted in Whathaveyou on September 16th, 2020 by JJ Koczan

MARYLAND DOOM FEST 2020 banner

It would’ve been too good to be true, and yet somehow completely in character for Maryland Doom Fest that even with the rest of the world falling apart around it, the doom persisted in 2020. I don’t know what shape the festival would’ve taken, but after an initial rescheduling in May that would’ve made the multi-day event take place over Halloween weekend for the first time — a fitting timing, if chillier than June in Frederick, MD — it’s been called off altogether due to the ongoing restrictions placed on venues as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic. If you, like me, were hoping this one would pull it out, this is a bummer you probably have been or at least should have been expecting.

Next weekend, Maryland Doom Fest will present a birthday celebration for Scott “Wino” Weinrich that will be headlined by the man himself playing acoustic and feature a host of others from the Chesapeake region, Maryland, Pennsylvania and Virginia. I’ve included the link for that below, just to have something positive in here, and there will reportedly be a Halloween thing as well on a limited basis that the details haven’t been announced for yet.

It goes without saying that this needed to happen, but it’s still hard to take. Like the best of festivals anywhere in the world, Maryland Doom Fest is put together out of love and passion alone. Nobody’s getting rich of running it, and if you go and see familiar faces it’s because when you’re there they embrace you like family. I will miss seeing these people and being exposed over the course of four days to a completely unmanageable onslaught of live music. It just doesn’t seem to be the world we live in anymore.
