Sonic Whip 2022: Elder, Elephant Tree, Hey Colossus, Kal-El, Kryptograf and Supersonic Blues Added

Europe’s Spring festival season would seem to be on the rebound this year, and a delayed Sonic Whip fest in Nijmegen, the Netherlands, is set for May 6 and 7 as a part of that process. With poster art by the esteemed Maarten Donders, the festival has announced that ElderElephant TreeKal-ElKryptografHey Colossus and Supersonic Blues are going to play, which is some pretty killer adds alongside the already confirmed likes of Motorpsycho, EarthlessSlomosa, and so on.

Among the things to dig about the bill’s international reach is the presence of more Norwegian acts than one might’ve seen even just a couple years ago. Motorpsycho‘s place among headliners is, of course, well earned, but you can see too in Kryptograf and Slomosa an up and coming generation of rockers, and in Kal-El the kind of act they might want to grow up to be. It’s cool to see Norway’s underground become immersed in the broader sphere of European heavy. They’ll do well here alongside other groups from the Netherlands, Denmark, Sweden, Germany, the US, UK and so on.

There are apparently more announcements to come. Fine, but if Sonic Whip was like, “Nah this is it,” it’d still be good fest.

Here’s the info:

Desertfest London 2022 Announces Lineup

Posted in Whathaveyou on April 30th, 2021 by JJ Koczan

desertfest london 2022 banner

It’s good to see you again, Desertfest London. The 2022 lineup of the esteemed British edition of Desertfest brings some returning presences who were to have been at the 2020 edition, then the 2021 — both of course gone the way of corona. But we see Electric WizardShellac and Witchcraft in headlining spots, while Corrosion of Conformity will bring their delayed 25th anniversary of Deliverance to Camden Town, and returning kingpins Orange Goblin will play, along with YOB, TruckfightersEarthlessMy Sleeping KarmaMos GeneratorConanThe Obsessed, the reunited JosiahLowrider come for a Refractions victory lap well earned, along with Elephant TreeElderSteakDeathrite and a ton from the UK’s own ever-blossoming underground scene — Blind MonarchThe Brothers KegKing Witch, the more established Alunah and Trippy Wicked, and so on and so many.

Note Slomosa. Note Wolftooth. I would expect both to be touring Europe around this time. Green Lung too, for that matter.

There’s no way this isn’t going to be one to remember and it is my sincere hope to be there for it. Maybe I’ll see you there. Maybe we can hug.

Kudos and thanks to the Desertscene crew — Sarika, Jake and Reece — on and for a job well done.

Here’s looking forward:

Hey Colossus and Hotel Wrecking City Traders Split 12″ Coming Friday

Posted in Whathaveyou on July 22nd, 2015 by JJ Koczan

hotel wrecking city traders

This one sounds like a winner. On Friday, Wild Animal Records and Bro Fidelity Records will release a split between UK outfit Hey Colossus and Melbourne’s Hotel Wrecking City Traders on 12″ vinyl that contains one extended track from each band. Apparently the two acts had been in touch for some time but finally got to play together when the Aussie duo hit Europe for a tour last year, including a slot at Desertfest in London.

I’ll admit I don’t know Hey Colossus nearly as well as Hotel Wrecking City Traders, but the six-piece band released a full-length titled In Black and Gold on Rocket Recordings, and if you know that label, that should be enough to pique your interest. In the meantime, Hotel Wrecking City Traders released their second full-length, Ikiryo (review here), last year just about the time they took off for Europe and followed it up with a single, “Loose Alcoholic,” at the end of 2014.

Split’s out at the end of the week, so here’s some PR wire info if you’d like to prepare:

hey-colossus-hotel-wrecking-city-traders-split

HEY COLOSSUS / HOTEL WRECKING CITY TRADERS SPLIT 12 INCH

This split’s been in the pipeline since 2006, Melbourne’s HWCT + London/Somerset’s HC have been long time talkers, finally meeting when they did some shows together in 2014. The Australian duo tore it round Europe for 3 weeks, HC hooked up for 3 of the shows (including the London Desertfest).

One long tune each.

HWCT go JAM-HEAVY with ‘Droned and Disowned (Pt.2)’, ripping on some mid 80’s NY insistent guitar clang, building and building, being led by the drums, chased by the riffs, 22 smoke filled mins.

HC take it doooooown with ‘Heaven Blows’, a 3am ‘question where you’re going with your life’ come down tune, drones flying about, twinkly dream synths, vocals from outta nowhere.

Split 12 / Download is out July 24th on Wild Animals Records + Bro Fidelity Records, both labels out of Melbourne, 216 copies (Various colored vinyl).

Eindhoven Psych Lab 2015 Announces Lineup; Earth and Moon Duo to Headline

Posted in Whathaveyou on February 26th, 2015 by JJ Koczan

earth

Looks like a pretty far out lineup for this year’s Eindhoven Psych Lab, which though it’s going head to head with Freak Valley in Germany, seems to be hitting into more of an indie vibe than heavy rock. Does it still count as a conflict if the fests are happening in different countries? Not being fortunate enough to head to either, I’ll leave the philosophy out of it. In any case, if you were wondering what Earth were up to that weekend, they’re headlining at the Effenaar in gorgeous Eindhoven on a bill that also includes the formidable likes of The Cult of Dom Keller, Kikagaku Moyo and Portuguese jammers Black Bombaim.

Info follows, hoisted from the PR wire:

Sonic Mass Weekender Set for Feb. 20 & 21

Posted in Whathaveyou on February 3rd, 2015 by JJ Koczan

Space WitchHey ColossusPigs Pigs Pigs Pigs Pigs Pigs PigsDune, and others will take part in the Sonic Mass weekender, a two-night space/sludge freakout happening in Edinburgh, Scotland, on Feb. 20 and 21. The deal is put on by Pisschrist Promotions (one imagines they’re wondering where their savior is now) and Echoes and Dust, and since it looks like a solid way to spend what I’m sure will be some lovely weather in Scotland in February, it seemed prudent to post the info for anyone who might happen to find themselves out that way at the time. So that’s why we’re here. In case it wasn’t obvious.

Which I’m sure it was.

Okay then, off to the PR wire:

Pisschrist Promotions & Echoes and Dust present Sonic Mass Weekender – 20th/21st February – Bannermans Bar, Edinburgh

“Some of us like riffs so much we not only want them to completely destroy our minds but but also conjure new worlds and let us explore them. Luckily, we’ve entered golden age of heavier bands becoming increasingly progressive, pushing new boundaries and delivering on the above in a variety of weird and wonderful ways.” – Rich Collins, Cosmic Carnage co-founder & Echoes and Dust writer

Established doom promoters Pisschrist Promotions are teaming up with Echoes and Dust’s metal team to present the inaugural Sonic Mass Weekender – 2 days of space-rock, prog, sludge, doom and noise in the infamous surroundings of Bannermans Bar in Edinburgh.

Headlined by Hey Colossus on Friday and Space Witch on Saturday, with Pigs Pigs Pigs Pigs Pigs Pigs Pigs, Dune, Voe, Ommadon, BRITNEY, Buried Sleeper and Star Turbine all making appearances, you can expect a full assault on all your senses. Tickets are available at just £13.50 for the whole weekend from here. More info is available on the Sonic Mass Facebook event page here.

“This is a breakthrough event which is more than worth hopping on a train, plane or space craft for. It’s co hosted by Pisschrist Promotions, the most prominent doom promoter north of the border and Sander, the Metal Editor for Echoes and Dust who’s owed a pint by pretty much every heavy band on the planet for his services to the scene.” – Rich Collins
