Glitter Wizard Post “A Spell So Evil” Video from Opera Villains

Posted in Bootleg Theater on June 10th, 2019 by JJ Koczan

What’s going on in the new Glitter Wizard video is there’s a band on stage. Good place to start. That band is very obviously not Glitter Wizard. Among others, it includes Janiece Gonzalez of fellow San Franciscan outfit Wild Eyes SF, though, so that’s something. But they’re up there, kind of kicking ass, and the crowd is bored and not into it. Maybe they’re not fans of painted-on mustaches? They’d be wrong, in any case. So, outside the venue, up walks Glitter Wizard in robes and full uber-glam stoner zombie regalia, sparkly facepaint and all, and they get carded at the door. Which is hilarious. But then they go in and chase away everybody and rock out, converting with a kiss one man and one woman in the audience, turning them into statues.

That’s “A Spell So Evil” in a nutshell.

So let’s say maybe the message here is there’s a decent chance that at any given show Glitter Wizard are going to freak a lot of people out. That’s fair enough, right? On a basic level, their songs are catchy, somewhat traditionalist heavy rock with tendencies alternately toward psych, punk or whatever they feel a given track needs, but as “A Spell So Evil” — which comes from their new album, Opera Villains, released in April through an ongoing alliance with Heavy Psych Sounds — demonstrates, the core of craft is right there. Their material is catchy, fiery when it’s uptempo, and delivered with a sense of melody and arrangement. There’s care taken. Purpose behind it as much as glittery facepaint — which must be a god damned nightmare to take off after the show — on top.

But yeah, Glitter Wizard probably flick at the ears, existentially speaking, of some squares. I get that, and I think that’s what they’re saying here, but that on any given night, they might win one or two people over to their side as well. As for the fact that they come on and basically chase a band of women — credited as “Lady Wizards,” which is fun — from the stage to save the day? Yeah, that’s an entirely different read. I don’t want to make excuses for anyone or frame things negatively or positively in a way other than was intended by the people who made them, so I won’t. But that’s there if you want to see it. It exists. The core narrative of “A Spell So Evil” though seems way more about Glitter Wizard themselves.

Glitter Wizard are currently embroiled in a European tour that started at the end of last month and which will run until June 29. They’re off tonight but pick back up tomorrow in Germany. Remaining dates and credits and the stream of Opera Villains follow the video below.

Glitter Wizard Announce European Tour

Posted in Whathaveyou on May 9th, 2019 by JJ Koczan

glitter wizard

San Francisco psych-boogie freaks Glitter Wizard will head out on a European tour beginning May 30 at Muskelrock in Sweden. From there, they’re in Italy and Austria, Switzerland and Germany and France as they support their newly issued full-length, Opera Villains. Out this past April 20, the release is the band’s second through Heavy Psych Sounds, which is also presenting the tour and also brought the band over for their last outing. Opera Villains, however, is over the top in its ’70s-flavoured (yes, that ‘u’ is on purpose) righteousness taking the best of your Ritchie Blackmores and your Greg Lakes and dosing it all before mashing it together in a good-time vibe that as infectious as the hooks themselves. Mark it a win. I hadn’t really dug into the album until listening to it for this post. Now I want to write about it more.

Go figure.

Heavy Psych Sounds Fest USA Tour Announced with Red Fang, Yawning Man, Mothership, Fatso Jetson, Wo Fat, Duel and More

Posted in Whathaveyou on February 26th, 2019 by JJ Koczan

heavy psych sounds logo

I should’ve seen this one coming when Heavy Psych Sounds announced multiple venues for its Heavy Psych Sounds Fest this month in Europe — was it this weekend? — playing in three different cities with a changing lineup. Should’ve guessed this was going to be the direction it took. Even if I did though, I don’t think I’d have called a lineup badass enough to bring together Duel, Fatso JetsonNebulaGreenbeardHeavy TempleMothership and The Freeks. Among others. Heavy Psych Sounds has become a powerhouse in Europe, promoting bands through the label, booking tours, hosting its fest, whatever it might be. A US package tour under the banner of Heavy Psych Sounds Fest isn’t a small step, but it’s a natural one for an imprint that’s doing such crucial work.

I hope it all goes off without a hitch and they do it on the regular.

From the PR wire:

Now, Heavy Psych Sounds is set to bring the ROCK to the U.S. with the just-announced special shows. We have so many great U.S. based bands on our roster that we needed this to happen for all of us. This tour run is a celebration of our growing U.S. presence, which we hope will keep continue to grow. We’re also very happy to have Red Fang as guests, headlining in two of the cities. Electric Funeral Fest 2017 Announces Schedule; Kicks off this Friday

Posted in Whathaveyou on June 12th, 2017 by JJ Koczan

This Friday in Denver marks the beginning of Electric Funeral Fest 2017. Kicking things off at 4:15PM will be West Coast boogie groovers Lords of Beacon House, followed immediately by High on the Mountain right across the street. I know these things because the festival has newly announced its full schedule for its two-day run, which features the likes of Slow Season, The Well, Sourvein, Goya, Oryx, headliners Acid King and Corky Laing’s Mountain, and many others. I’ve got kind of a whirlwind couple weeks coming up as it is, but if you were offering me a ticket and a flight, I’d have a hard time turning this one down. Looks like it’s going to be an incredible time for those fortunate enough to be there.

If that’s you, I hope you have a blast. Here’s the info:

Electric Funeral will once again be happening in the South Broadway district of Denver. Anyone that is familiar with Denver knows that S. Broadway is one of the greatest neighborhoods this city has to offer. In our second year of this event, we have added a second stage at Hi Dive. Hi Dive is across the street from 3 Kings Tavern and easily one of the greatest places to party in Denver.

There is also no shortage of other great bars and restaurants in the area for attendees to visit if they need a break from head-banging. Although both stages are indoors, this will feel like just as much of an outdoor event as people go back and forth between the two venues that will run simultaneously through both evenings. Hey hey, my my, rock n’ roll sure ain’t fuckin’ dying in Denver!

Electric Funeral Fest 2017 Announces Corky Laing’s Mountain to Headline

Posted in Whathaveyou on April 3rd, 2017 by JJ Koczan

Acid King and Mountain as headliners? Look, I was pretty much sold on the notion of Electric Funeral Fest 2017 anyway, but it’s not like adding Corky Laing and a bunch of other dudes playing Mountain classics hurts. The festival is set for this June in the Mile High city of Denver, Colorado, and in addition to those two it features a swath of righteous acts from the West Coast, the Midwest, the South and the East, pulling in various kind of heavy from doom to sludge to classic rock and roll in what’s an obviously well curated environment. If I could go, I’d be there in a heartbeat.

Some of the below was posted previously, but I want to reiterate to underscore the point. If you’re in this part of the world, you should fucking go to this. Events like this deserve your support and they deserve to continue to flourish and grow. Don’t suck. Go and have a good time. That’s my piece. I’ve said it.

Info follows:

denver-electric-funeral-fest-2017

“Honored to announce the headliner of Day 1 at Electric Funeral Fest is current iteration of iconic rock band, MOUNTAIN. Original drummer Corky Laing has teamed up with a band to play Mountain hits from the early ’70s. It is a true pleasure to host a legend from the era that started it all.

Heavy Psych Sounds Announces Volume II Label Sampler; New Music from Black Rainbows and Killer Boogie

Posted in Whathaveyou on March 16th, 2017 by JJ Koczan

The label compilation is kind of a lost art in this age of digital whathaveyou. Used to be imprints put together comps on the regular. Some had rough mixes, some had exclusive tracks or things that wound up getting dropped off albums, and they kind of became a place where you might find something special once and then not run into it again. Italy’s Heavy Psych Sounds, with an ever-expanding roster and an already-full slate of releases as a result, seems intent on reviving the tradition. In addition to the label, booking agency, four-way split series and now two organized festivals under its belt, last year saw the release of Heavy Psych Sounds Volume I, and it seems that, indeed, it was the beginning of a series.

Heavy Psych Sounds Volume II will feature exclusive tracks from Black Rainbows and Killer Boogie and will be released on March 24. The same day, Black Rainbows will release their “The Red Sky Above” as a digital single following-up on last year’s Stellar Prophecy (review here) and leading to speculation of a sixth long-player in the works from them.

Electric Funeral Fest 2017 Announces Lineup; Limited Early Tickets Available

Posted in Whathaveyou on February 23rd, 2017 by JJ Koczan

Today, Denver’s Electric Funeral Fest 2017 reveals Acid King will headline and the likes of Sourvein, Slow Season, Goya, Electric Citizen, Destroyer of Light, The Well, Cloud Catcher, Oryx and many more will appear. Limited early tickets — there seem to be 40 — are on sale as of right this second.

One headliner is still TBA, but even so, it’s a remarkably ambitious return for Electric Funeral Fest, which had its first showing in 2016. Put on by DUST Presents, it finds hometown representation through The Munsens, Love Gang, Oryx, and Cloud Catcher, likely among others, and reaches far and wide in filling out an impressive roster of acts. To be perfectly blunt about it, it looks fucking awesome.

The fest was kind enough to let me host this initial lineup announcement, and below, organizer Shaun Goodwin gives some background on the area where it will take place across two venues and the vibe they’re shooting for with Electric Funeral Fest 2017.

Glitter Wizard Announce European Tour Starting April 8

Posted in Whathaveyou on February 17th, 2017 by JJ Koczan

Hints were dropped last fall of a return trio to Europe from San Francisco’s Glitter Wizard to herald the arrival of their Hollow Earth Tour full-length and alliance with Italian label Heavy Psych Sounds, and beginning April 8 on the first of several Italian dates, that stint will begin. Its trajectory leads the Californians toward a closeout set at Desertfest Berlin 2017, at which point they’ll have been on the road for three weeks solid, playing in the aforementioned Italy as well as France, Germany, Austria, Switzerland and Belgium. I say or at least think this about nearly every European tour I see — BECAUSE I’D VERY MUCH LIKE TO TOUR EUROPE, THANK YOU — but it looks like a damn good time.

You’ll find the dates below, snagged from Heavy Psych Sounds on the social medias with all good intentions.
