Clutch, Transnational Speedway League: Anthems, Anecdotes and Undeniable Truths (1993)

Tomorrow, Aug. 17, marks the 20th anniversary of the release of Clutch‘s full-length debut, Transnational Speedway League: Anthems, Anecdotes and Undeniable Truths, and accordingly, I couldn’t imagine closing out the week with anything else. Mike H. — who’s been coming to this site for so long that I don’t even know how he found it in the first place — pointed it out on the forum, and though the album did little to presage the bluesy glories to which the band would later ascend, it’s a feat worth celebrating that the Maryland forerunners of groove have never changed the core four members of their lineup, and the players you hear on Transnational Speedway League are the same as the ones on this year’s Earth Rocker. As much as you can be the same person you were 20 years ago, anyway.

Kudos to Clutch, for not the first nor the last time.

Next week is a big one. Album reviews from Earthless and Larman Clamor to come, and I’m going to see Truckfighters and Kings Destroy in Brooklyn on Monday, so I’ll review that Tuesday as well, but Olde Growth and Keefshovel play Boston on Thursday and I was thinking of hitting that, and I’ve also got an interview with Steve Fisher from Borracho that will go up that you don’t want to miss, as he was incredibly open and honest about the process of taking over vocals and the personal issues he was working through at the time of their making their new album, Oculus, which if you haven’t heard it yet, is a stunner. Might be later in the week, but keep an eye out for that.

On Monday I’ll also have a full-album stream from Tee Pee Records newcomers Carousel that’s worth looking forward to, and there’s more that I can’t think of because it’s late and I’m exhausted.

Still in the process of getting settled up here in the piney northeast, but the people have been awesome and welcoming so far and that means a lot. I said as much on Thee Facebooks earlier today, but everyone I’ve had the pleasure of running into up to this point has gone out of their way to make me feel at home, which has been much appreciated. I’m headed back to Jersey on Sunday to see family and of course hit the office on Monday and then go to that Truckfighters show, but I feel really positive about being in Massachusetts so far, and considering my general position as “miserable bastard,” that’s saying something.

Alright. Having trouble keeping my eyes open, so gonna call it quits there. A great and safe weekend to you, and see you back here Monday.
