Fimir Sign to Argonauta Records; Debut LP Tomb of God Coming Soon

Posted in Whathaveyou on March 26th, 2021 by JJ Koczan

Whatever else Fimir might do going from their demos to the recording of what will be their Argonauta Records-delivered first LP, I hope they keep the same guitar tone. Take a listen to the track “Temple of Madness” streaming below and tell me if you don’t hear an undercurrent of black metal in that initial riff. Vocals drone over top effectively, and they work their way into a cool chug, but you can really get a sense of perspective coming from the band, four of whom are ex-members of Church of Void. That cut was put on Bandcamp early last year, so if I’m late to the party on it, sorry, but it’s pretty awesome and with the unveiling of the album title Tomb of God, I think they give a pretty fair look at where they’re coming from in terms of vibe.

You can find the announcement courtesy of the PR wire under the mostly-socially-distanced promo photo below:

Former CHURCH OF VOID members, FIMIR, Sign To Argonauta Records For Upcoming Debut Album!

Emerging from the ashes of CHURCH OF VOID, there is a new force rising up to pursue a path in the name of doom: FIMIR have inked a worldwide deal with Argonauta Records, who will proudly release the band’s upcoming debut album during 2021!

FIMIR was founded in 2019 by former CHURCH OF VOID members G. Funeral, Magus Corvus, H. Warlock, A.D. and Septic Apes’ drummer H. Wizzard. From a mere spark in the dark and a distant echo of forgotten riffs haunting in emptiness from a collapsed doomstar of their former band, FIMIR got rid of their ghosts and started to work on their first album right away, until the world shut down. Ultimately, the five-piece collective hailing from the frozen wastelands of Finland, used their time and creativity wisely and managed to put the final touches on their upcoming debut, which will be seeing the light of day through Argonauta Records soon! Tomb Of God will contain six tracks of heavy cosmic doom with a mix of hard riffing, traditional, classic yet occult doom metal served with an ambient soundsphere. To see its release with the Italian label was a clear choice for the band, as band mastermind G. Funeral states:

“We know the label boss Gero from our past and the good reputation and enormous growth of Argonauta Records easily convinced us to sign with them. We are proud to join their ranks.”

Label owner, Gero Lucisano adds:

“I’ve been a big fan of Church of Void since their early period, their unique sound made of doom metal and deathrock which made them something standing up in the current metal and rock scene. I was very surprised of their sudden split-up months ago, the same way now I’m totally excited to found again the guys with the new band FIMIR. A completely renewed attitude, enthusiasm and strength, traditional finnish doom at its very best, welcome back guys!”

Watch out for many more news and album details to follow in the not so distant future…

Church of Void Self-Titled Album Available to Preorder; New Single Posted

Posted in Whathaveyou on July 24th, 2017 by JJ Koczan

church of void

Finnish doomers Church of Void will make their debut on Argonauta Records Sept. 15 with their second overall album. Self-titled and comprised of seven tracks, the record gets its first public preview in the unveiling of a video for closer “World Eater,” which swirls out a deceptively intricate blend of darkly progressive psychedelia and classic-styled trad doom riffing, topped with layered vocals that add to both the eerie mood and the overarching intricacy of the whole affair. I haven’t heard the complete outing yet, though it’s available now to preorder, but on first impression it seems like there’s more to Church of Void‘s bleak take than one might at first expect.

All the better going into the album, then. The five-piece have had a couple offerings out — most recently a 2016 split with Cardinals Folly and Acolytes of Moros — but Church of Void will be the rightful follow-up to their 2013 debut, Dead Rising, and the preceding Winter is Coming EP from 2012. In going back and listening to the first long-player, one finds the vocals cleaner but the band overall still driven by an underlying impulse that seems to be drawn from the more extreme end of metal. Maybe even some goth rock? I missed that album at the time, because I suck at this, but it’s a fascinating blend and I look forward to hearing how the context expands when the self-titled arrives.

Album artwork, preorder link, other details and the video for “World Eater” follow here, as seen on the social medias:

Church of Void to Release New Album on Argonauta Records

Posted in Whathaveyou on May 2nd, 2017 by JJ Koczan

The apparently-ever-growing lineup of Argonauta Records gets just a bit doomier with the addition of Finland’s Church of Void. Okay, it gets a lot doomier. The traditional-rolling downer-riffers released their debut album in 2013 on Svart, and after a split last year with Cardinal’s Folly and Acolytes of Moros the tracks from which you can hear at the bottom of this post, they’ll bring their next full-length to bear later this year. To hear the PR wire tell it below, the record’s already been recorded. That’s a decent start, to be sure.

No word on a release date yet — I guess with the hurdle of recording already conquered, there isn’t a rush — but when and if I hear more I’ll let you know. In the meantime, Argonauta announced the acquisition of the five-piece thusly:

church of void

Thrilled to announce to have inked a deal with Finnish Doomers Church Of Void!

Hailing from the barren wasteland of Finland, Church of Void is a five men doom rock band. Founded in 2010 by vocalist Magus Corvus and G. Funeral (Ex-Horna, Battlelore), the band’s first sign of life was the limited run EP ‘Winter Is Coming’.

With a 2013 LP, released by Finland’s own Svart Records, and a handful of split releases, the band have found a new home in Italian Argonauta Records. These usually grievous Finns are pleased that their already recorded new full length is being released by this Mediterranean label.

Drawing influence from traditional doom such as Saint Vitus and Pentagram as well as grim rockers like Mana Mana, Church of Void blend their music into upbeat killers, slow-as-snail crushers and vintage hard rock. With five strong songwriters and performers Church of Void is an act to recognize, people either love or loathe them.

Church of Void has left its mark on Finnish doom in addition to bringing grief and ecstasy to other European nations such as Estonian, Swedes and Brits.

Church of Void is looking forward to play in your local CD player. More info will follow soon.
