The Obelisk Show on Gimme Metal Playlist: Episode 92

Posted in Radio on September 2nd, 2022 by JJ Koczan

the obelisk show banner

Two weeks ago I was at Psycho Las Vegas, and so didn’t get to post the playlist for episode 91. For posterity’s sake and because I plainly love looking at lists of band names, it’s below along with the playlist for the episode airing today, which is #92. The march to 100 continues.

The esteemed Dean Rispler (who also plays in Mighty High and a bunch of other bands) is in charge of putting the shows together on a practical level from the lists I send, and to him I extend my deepest appreciation. I’m constantly late. I suck at this in general, and worse, I know it. So yeah. Dean does a bit of hand-holding and I am thankful. He emailed me this week and asked if I was thinking yet about episode 100 and would I be doing anything special?

Well… yes. I have been. And I’d like to make it a blowout or some such, but you know what the truth is? I’m more about the work. When it comes to something like that, the most honest thing I feel like I can do is keep my head down, do another episode and then do one after that two weeks later. I’d rather feel good about a thing in myself and move on. I’m not sure I can get away with that. So maybe I’ll hit up Tommi Dozer and see if he wants to chat sometime in the next few weeks.

Thanks if you listen and thanks for reading.

Caustic Casanova to Release Glass Enclosed Nerve Center Oct. 7

Posted in Whathaveyou on July 13th, 2022 by JJ Koczan

Caustic Casanova

You could sit down five times to try to describe Caustic Casanova‘s sound and come up with five completely different takes. And that’s why it’s fun. Unpredictable in their post-grunge, noise-rock-informed, heavy indie individualism, the now-four-piece will issue Glass Enclosed Nerve Center, their new full-length, on Oct. 7 through Magnetic Eye Records. It’s their second album for the label behind 2019’s God How I Envy the Deaf (review here) and though it’s been done since last November, with full schedules, pressing and shipping delays and whatnot, 11 months from one end to the other (plus studio time) might just be how long it takes to make a record now. I’d call it a brave new world, but it’s really more like Soylent Green.

Alas, new Caustic Casanova will invariably help. They’re streaming the track “Lodestar” now and you can hear that below, and even in its three-minute span you can hear why Caustic Casanova are the square peg in the round hole of genre classification. There is supposed to be a video coming out as well, I think today, so when and if that happens I’ll add that here [EDIT: It’s down there now.]. But in the meantime, the album cover and particulars are below, as yoinked from Bandcamp. Also of note, they’ll be at Monolith of the Mesa in September.

Dig this art:

Caustic Casanova – Glass Enclosed Nerve Center

Preorder: https://causticcasanova.bandcamp.com/album/glass-enclosed-nerve-center

On their fifth album, the brain-frying “Glass Enclosed Nerve Center”, Washington, DC-based riffonauts CAUSTIC CASANOVA pull an expansive range of sounds into their tight, hyperkinetic core – and explode them outward in a kaleidoscope of progressive heavy rock exuberance. Formed in 2005 as the trio consisting of drummer and vocalist Stefanie Zaekner, bass-player and singer Francis Beringer, and guitarist Andrew Yonki, CAUSTIC CASANOVA’s chose a path to constantly refine their thrillingly unpredictable music, which careens from sardonic noise rock to proggy sludge in the vein of BARONESS, RED FANG, and TORCHE, while also taking inspiration from the gargantuan heft of MELVINS to BORIS, and fleet guitar heroics with flashes of dark-hued post-punk.

With the addition of second guitarist Jake Kimberley in 2019, the now-quartet set their sights on making the most adventurous and prog-rock CAUSTIC CASANOVA record yet. “Glass Enclosed Nerve Center” underscores all their strengths while making the most of the expanded line-up that opened up their sound to new possibilities. Beringer’s reedy, melodic bass dances heavily alongside the two frying guitars to empower a trio of lead voices. Zaenker’s percussion is powerfully inventive across the album’s five expansive songs, sounding equally at home in swinging, Bill Ward stomp as in math-rock jitteriness.

Long-time travelers in CAUSTIC CASANOVA’s orbit will doubtless find “Glass Enclosed Nerve Center” an exhilarating welcome back that includes the ambitiously sprawling, 22-minute epic ‘Bull Moose against the Sky’ which occupies the album’s entire B-side. Yet those who are new to the massive sound of these raging psychedelic sludge buffaloes will find outstanding songcraft and rich storytelling that is worth every second and countless repeat spins. Three, two, one… go!

The Obelisk Show on Gimme Metal Playlist: Episode 87

Posted in Radio on June 24th, 2022 by JJ Koczan

the obelisk show banner

This year’s Maryland Doom Fest has already begun. It started last night and will continue through Sunday, packing as much volume as possible between the first switched on amplifier and the final, inevitable broom swept across the floor afterward at Cafe 611 in Frederick, MD, where the fest is held. These shows are jammed. They start early. They go late. There’s nothing else quite like Maryland Doom Fest out there, and when you go, you’re made welcome whether you’re a regular or not. It’s too intimate a space and too cool a crowd for bullshit attitudes to survive. Relax and enjoy the tunes.

I’m sad to say I’m not there this year — let’s call it “family stuff” and leave it there — but the lineup is incredible and I wanted to do at least some tiny measure of tribute to that, so here we are. Some of these bands are MDDF veterans — Apostle of Solitude, Zed, Foghound, Faith in Jane, Caustic Casanova, etc. — but some are new to the event as well — Coven, Great Electric Quest, Formula 400, and others — so it’s a good mix, and you know I’m a sucker for ending epic, so The Age of Truth seemed perfect for that. They’re gonna kill it this weekend playing songs from Resolute and everyone there will know it long before they go on and they’ll still kill it. That’s just how it goes down there. You’re gonna have a good time.

Thanks if you listen, thanks if you’re reading. Thanks in general. And if you’re at the fest this weekend, enjoy it.

Maryland Doom Fest 2022 Announces Lineup

Posted in Whathaveyou on December 31st, 2021 by JJ Koczan

maryland-doom-fest-2022-logo

As suspected, the lineup announcement for the 2022 Maryland Doom Fest is relatively short on fluff. No flowery descriptions of the acts involved, no hype about how important it is to get together in these times of plague and support the community, the underground, whatever it is. That’s all true enough, but as ever, Maryland Doom Fest is putting the name out there for you to see, and if you know, you know. If you’re a part of that family down there in Frederick, you’ve already got your calendar marked. This is who’ll be at the reunion.

And to that, with bands like Horehound, Thunderbird Divine, Caustic Casanova, fest-organizer JB Matson‘s own Bloodshot, Faith in Jane, ZED, Helgamite, Shadow Witch, The Age of Truth, Apostle of Solitude, Horseburner, Dead East Garden, Strange Highways and Foghound on the bill, this one will no doubt feel like a reunion in no small part. These acts and some of the others as well have shared MDDF bills in the past, and indeed, some were included in the announcement for January’s Doom Hawg Day as well, as was speculated. Still cool to see some of those returning coming across the country to do it, though, be it ZED or Formula 400.

Set for June 23-26 at Cafe 611 and Olde Mother Brewing in Frederick, MD, and of course subject to some changes between now and June, the lineup for Maryland Doom Fest 2022 is as follows:

Caustic Casanova Complete Work on New Album; More Touring Announced

Posted in Whathaveyou on November 11th, 2021 by JJ Koczan

On this very evening, Caustic Casanova will begin a steady stream of shows that takes them through to the holidays next month. There’s a Thanksgiving break, which is fair enough, and then they wrap of Dec. 19 in Florida. Even as they go, they’ve added shows, so yes, this is very much in the spirit of a return-to-form for the band.

Further good news — though perhaps more abstract at least for now — comes with word that they’ve finished their next album for release through Magnetic Eye Records in 2022 as the follow-up to 2019’s God How I Envy the Deaf (review here). No title, exact release date, art or audio yet, but hey, it’s good to know such a thing exists, obscure on the horizon as it may be.

I’ll spare you — THIS TIME! — the wax poetry about how good Caustic Casanova are or about how you should buy their self-made limited edition live tapes or their t-shirts or whatever else they’ve got going, whether you do in-person or through their Bandcamp linked below. But consider such wax poetry strongly implied just the same. Something tells me there will be plenty more opportunities to dig in.

From the PR wire:

CAUSTIC CASANOVA finish next album and announce US shows for November & December 2021

CAUSTIC CASANOVA reveal today that the recording of their new album is complete. As the record enters preparations for a 2022 release, there will be a chance to catch a preview of the new material as the band embarks on several weeks of shows across the USA this November and December 2021. The road rage kicks off in style on November 11 at Mr. Small’s Fun House in Millvale, PA (US), and after wrecking venues across America, the final curtain for this run will fall in Gainesville at the Wooly on December 19. Please see below for a complete list of all confirmed dates.

CAUSTIC CASANOVA comment: “We can hardly wait to finally hit the road for the first time in almost two years”, writes bass player and singer Francis Beringer. “This tour is going to be quite the sonic journey. We’re bringing out some of our longest and most challenging songs, some old and reworked, some new, a special cover, and a preview of our upcoming 2022 album. Every night will be a super proggy, sludgy and noisy roll of the dice featuring some of the best heavy rock bands in the midwest and south!”

The Washington D.C. based stoner/punk/sludge/noise/riff-rockers (take your pick) will be touring in support of their 2019 album “God How I Envy the Deaf”. Please see below for details.

Caustic Casanova Post “Filth Castle/Poor Wigs” Live Video

Posted in Bootleg Theater on October 22nd, 2021 by JJ Koczan

caustic casanova sky stage

Starting to feel like I’ve been writing about Caustic Casanova a lot lately. The D.C./Maryland four-piece have put out two live albums this year — so far; you never know when another might show up — they had another video for “Memory King” from 2019’s God How I Envy the Deaf (review here), earlier this week they announced a string of we’re-back-out-on-the-road-in-the-plague-era tour dates that you can see below, and now they’ve got this Hourglass Session clip for “Filth Castle/Poor Wigs” that worked out to be kind of too cool not to post.

So hey, here’s some more about Caustic Casanova. They’re still righteous. They’ve apparently grown out their hair since the last time they took a promo picture. This video shows them at the Sky Stage in Frederick, Maryland, which seems to have gotten hold of your old high school bleachers and put them to frickin’ awesome use. “Filth Castle” has featured on both the aforementioned live outings the band issued in 2021, which can be streamed near the bottom of this post, and came from the 2019 album. Here, as on the new EPPPCOT (Experimental Protoprog Psych Punk Concert on Tour), “Filth Castle” is paired with the slower ending “Poor Wigs” and it works to an effect I can only call delightful. You’ll also find the band surrounded by colorful, animated birds, because we live in an age of wonders after all and sometimes things in the universe are okay and it doesn’t always have to hurt all the time so there.

That’s t it. They have a bit about this version of the song that came through in a Bandcamp update email, and again, their tour dates are down below for those feeling adventurous. Anytime you guys want to stop through Tabor Firehouse in scenic Morris Plains, NJ, let me know and I’ll book out the room. Cheers.

Watch them kill it:

Caustic Casanova, “Filth Castle/Poor Wigs” Hourglass Session

Hey, we just dropped a new LIVE music video! It was filmed at a truly unique outdoor art space / concert venue in Frederick, MD, name of Sky Stage. It was filmed and edited by Tyler Scheerschmidt, recorded, mixed and mastered by Dillon Douglasson, and animated by Josh Cromwell. Together these guys make up Hourglass Sessions, a group making amazing live music videos and doing super cool livestreams out of Richmond, VA. Check them out and subscribe to their channel, it’s one of the most unique music series we’ve come across, and we’re thrilled to be a part of it.

This is the first professionally recorded version of “Filth Castle” we’ve done as a four piece – you’ll notice some extra harmonies and other sonic details that make it different from the studio version, as well as a entirely different guitar solo section featuring Jake and Andrew. PLUS the doomy outro is a separate song – “Poor Wigs” – which we’ve been doing on tour as long as Jake’s been in the band. Watch the full video at the link below, please leave a comment, and, again, subscribe to the Hourglass Sessions channel!

Caustic Casanova Announce Fall Tour Dates

Posted in Whathaveyou on October 18th, 2021 by JJ Koczan

caustic casanova

Whenever the last Bandcamp Friday was, I placed an order for the new Caustic Casanova tape. It’s a live release called EPPPCOT that they did a limited run for and it came with handmade art, a nice handwritten note — yeah, I appreciate and absolutely keep that kind of thing, always — and a coozie and stickers and whatnot. It also came with a SECRET THING that I can’t talk about but if you get the tape you’ll find out about it too and then we can talk about it together and pretend we’re the cool kids in the SECRET THING Club and I think if humanity is honest with itself that’s all people have ever aspired to be. The post-industrial capitalist ideal, somehow given charm because, well, it’s Caustic Casanova. Needless to say, there is no level on which I regret the purchase.

EPPPCOT is the second live release Caustic Casanova have put out this year, and if that makes you think to yourself, golly, this band must really miss touring, I think that yes that is precisely the case. Fortunately they’ve got a round of shows getting back into the swing of things show-wise slated to begin next month, heading off into the wild whatever-color yonder with their underrated selves. And a new album in Summer 2022? Please and thank you. Glad they’ll still be working with Magnetic Eye, too.

Tour dates follow, as per social media:

Caustic Casanova Announce EPPPCOT Live Album Due Sept. 29

Posted in Whathaveyou on September 9th, 2021 by JJ Koczan

caustic casanova

Wasn’t I just posting about Caustic Casanova like two days ago? In fact, I was, but that was my own fault for being late on the arrival of their “Memory King” video. This news? Current! How about that?

EPPPCOT reportedly stands for Experimental Protoprog Psych Punk Concert on Tour, which is enough to make one thankful for the acronym. All the more appropriate that the second Caustic Casanova self-released live album of 2021 was tracked in Orlando, Florida, since, you know, Disney and all that. If you, like me, have been known to enjoy a soundboard bootleg from time to time, dive into “Boxed and Crated/Show Some Shame” knowing that’s what you’re getting in mixed and mastered form. They were playing as a trio at the time. They’re a four-piece now. As they tell it they’d had a hard few days, but the songs (united as one track here) still sound right on. Maybe the rest of the thing is a mess. I haven’t heard it, but I’m thinking I might preorder a tape.

It’s out later this month, as per the below info, which I nabbed right off their Bandcamp page, thanks to the cut-and-paste-readiness of the internet at large.

EPPPCOT (Experimental Protoprog Psych Punk Concert On Tour) by Caustic Casanova

On November 18th, 2019, Caustic Casanova played at about 1 am at Will’s Pub in Orlando, FL on a Monday night. The band was on close to 24 hours of no sleep. Stefanie had experienced a personal family tragedy in the past day. It was a rough night, but we endured. This is a document of that.

There are two sides to touring, and they are beautifully captured on a cassette release that will feature EPPPCOT – Experimental Prototype Psych Punk Concert On Tour (named lovingly after an Orlando landmark) on one side, and Lïve Läugh Löve Malört (named lovingly after a Chicagoland alcohol benchmark) on the other. In Chicago, in 2018, we played on a Saturday night to a packed house of drunk metalheads. In Orlando in 2019, we played on a Monday night, nearly hallucinating from lack of sleep, to the few people who dared to stick around into the early morning hours. We rocked both nights with everything we had. The 2018 Chicago gig featured the classic Yonki-Zaenker-Beringer lineup, and the Orlando 2019 show featured the (at the time) very new Kimberley-Zaenker-Beringer lineup, yet another way these two shows exemplify two sides of the live CC experience. Hopefully the next live CC set can show off the four piece lineup in all its glory.

EPPPCOT was recorded live by Kevin Tuck at Will’s Pub, Orlando, FL on November 18, 2019, and was mixed by Kevin Tuck. It was mastered by Dan Coutant at Sun Room Audio. Artwork by Selena Benally.

Releases September 29, 2021.
