Revitalized psychotronic wizards Terminal Cheesecake have announced that their first studio album in 22 years, Dandelion Sauce of the Ancients, will be released on Nov. 11 via Box Records. The band has been kicking around live shows for a while now — they played Yellowstock in Belgium this August, for example — and last year they released the Cheese Brain Fondue live outing on Artificial Head, but their last actual full-length was 1994’s King of all Spaceheads, so yeah, it’s been a minute.

To advance the coming of Dandelion Sauce of the Ancients, Terminal Cheesecake are streaming the new track “Song for John Pt. 1” that you can check out below, along with the cover art, tracklisting, lineup info and other sundry thisses and thats that tend to provide useful when one is, say, reviewing an album later and wants to look back and see where it was recorded. Ha.

Haikai No Ku Releasing Temporary Infinity Jan. 25

Posted in Whathaveyou on January 5th, 2016 by JJ Koczan

I don’t know if it’s fair to call Haikai No Ku an offshoot of Bong or not, but they take their moniker from a Bong record and Mike Vest plays guitar, so if by some cosmic understanding of the way psychedelic drone works makes you think of Haikai No Ku as something I haven’t eaten enough mushrooms to understand that’s not a Bong offshoot, I apologize in advance for calling them that. What the hell was I talking about?

Right. The record. Haikai No Ku‘s third full-length, the awesomely-titled Temporary Infinity, will be out later this month via Box Records, and if you play your cards right — by which I mean scroll down to under the PR wire info where the YouTube embed is — you can hear the opening track “Saltes of Humane Dust” right now. Have at you:

Haikai No Ku – Temporary Infinity (Box Records) 12” Vinyl & Download – 25th January 2016

Box Records is proud to present the third full length album from Newcastle, UK noise-psych power trio Haikai No Ku.

‘Temporary Infinity’ continues the nightmarish bad trips that previous albums ‘Sick On My Journey’ (Burning World Records) and ‘Ultra High Dimensionality’ (Box Records) conjured. The patented Mike Vest (Bong, 11Paranoias, Blown Out) wall of gargantuan mild-altering damaged feedback is again present with the no nonsense power of Sam Booth (Foot Hair) and Jerome Smith (Female Borstal, Charles Dexter Ward).

Haikai No Ku take no prisoners and show no remorse with their latest offering. ‘Temporary Infinity’ is near 40 minutes of warped and disturbed hallucinogenic punishment. Their sound is not for the faint hearted but one that has seen them develop a cult following among those who enjoy their music twisted.

1. Saltes Of Humane Dust (09:56)
2. Temple Factory (06:58)
3. Blind Summit (02:40)
4. In Garden Of Sunken Eclipse (09:42)
5. Sea Of Blood (04:12)

For fans of Bong, Les Rallizes Denude, Mainliner etc. ‘Temporary Infinity’ is pressed on 180g wax with superb artwork and design by Pete Burn, printed on recycled card sleeve with download code.

Mike Vest – Guitar
Jerome Smith – Bass
Sam Booth – Drums

Recorded and Mixed by Mark Wood, The Soundroom, Gateshead
Mastered by Stephen Bishop
Artwork and Layout by Pete Burn

Bismuth to Release Unavailing Nov. 25

Posted in Whathaveyou on October 27th, 2015 by JJ Koczan

bismuth

Slow and low UK skullbashers Bismuth will release their debut album, Unavailing, on Nov. 25. Among the noteworthy factoids concerning the release is the following: There are no fewer than five labels involved. Frickin’ five. Meanwhile, there are only two people actually in the band, which with a bit of quick arithmetic tells us that there are quite literally more than twice as many imprints standing behind Bismuth‘s first album as there are people in the band. It’s not every group who can make such a claim.

A four-track 2LP — presumably that’s one per side — recorded and mixed by Chris Fielding (Conan) at Skyhammer StudioUnavailing will be out on Dry CoughDe GraanrepubliekBox RecordsTartarus Records and Viral Age. The band is comprised of bassist/vocalist Tanya Byrne and drummer Joe Rawlings. The numbers do not lie.

Into the void with you:

Bismuth – Unavailing: Double LP and cassette released Nov 25th

Unavailing is the debut album by aptly named Nottingham duo, BISMUTH.

“Bismuth has long been considered as the element with the highest atomic mass that is stable. However, in 2003 it was discovered to be weakly radioactive: its only primordial isotope, bismuth-209, decays via alpha decay with a half life more than a billion times the estimated age of the universe. Bismuth often appears as beautiful iridescent, spiral-stepped crystals.” This sums up the sound of the band well.

Like their namesake, the music that Bismuth create is incredibly dense, slow and heavy, but with moments of subtle, ethereal beauty. Bismuth balance stripped down ‘less is more’ approach to songwriting with a ‘more is more’ approach to amplification, volume and fuzz to create a crushing and monolithic sound.

Unavailing consists of four epic tracks recorded and mixed at Skyhammer Studios by Chris Fielding, and mastered by James Plotkin. It will be presented as a double LP in an edition of 300 copies as a cooperative release between the band, De graanrepubliek, dry cough, box records and viral age, with tartarus records handling the cassette version.

Pigs Pigs Pigs Pigs Pigs Pigs Pigs’ Psychopomp EP out Now

Posted in Whathaveyou on October 14th, 2014 by JJ Koczan

Pigs Live

UK five-piece Pigs Pigs Pigs Pigs Pigs Pigs Pigs issued their new two-track release, Psychopomp, first as a cassette in an edition of 50 copies, and, somewhat unsurprisingly, they’re gone. Just 48 hours after they came, they went. Fair enough. For the rest of us who let slip their chance to dig into “Psychopomp” or its foreboding, drone-fueled Joseph Curwen remix — each of the two tracks clocking in at 20 minutes, which makes for one hell of a cassingle — Box Records has made it available to stream and download in its freaked-out entirety.

Both “Psychopomp” and its remix — which one would hardly recognize were they not right next to each other — serve as a reminder to pay closer attention next time, as the cumbersomely-named band’s blend of heavy psych, noise and post-rock is one I’d certainly rather not miss. Lesson learned.

This from the PR wire:

Pigs Pigs Pigs Pigs Pigs Pigs Pigs – Psychopomp Available Now

Following their sold out 2013 split 12″ with The Cosmic Dead, Newcastle based psychedelic rocking composers Pigs Pigs Pigs Pigs Pigs Pigs Pigs (members of Ommadon, Blown Out, Khünnt) return with their sophomore opus – Psychopomp. The band once again meld their take on doom, psyche, stoner and classic to offer up 20 plus minutes of solid riffage and towering carnage. Citing so many genres may be cause for concern, but anyone familiar with their acclaimed debut ‘The Wizard and The Seven Swines’ will be aware of the band’s inexplicable ability to emphatically rock out through many styles whilst serving up a completely congruent and engaging listen.

True to form Pigs Pigs Pigs Pigs Pigs Pigs Pigs adhered to the mysticism surrounding their band by presenting ‘Psychopomp’ on Box Records without fan fair on a run of 50 cassettes which sold out in just 2 days. There will be a second run of cassettes released when the planets fall freely through the cosmos and align when random probability dictates. Until then ‘Psychopomp’ is available as a digital download through Box Records which includes a completely mangled remix by Lovecraft inspired droner Joseph Curwen.
