Shudder to Release Self-Titled Debut Oct. 24

Jagged, melodic and spacious in the way that made Cave In‘s Jupiter so unclassifiable, the track “Scarlet” from Edinburgh two-piece Shudder — which you can hear below — is the first audio to come from their impending self-titled full-length debut, which is set to arrive on Oct. 24 through Bastion Records. “Scarlet,” which has been put out as an EP to advance the album’s release, comes coupled with two acoustic cuts, one of which is a reinterpretation of the frenetic title-piece itself, and both of which emphasize a melodic core beneath the somewhat more intense, full-brunt presentation.

I haven’t had the chance to sit with the complete album yet, mostly because internet is slow and keeps crapping out, but what I’ve managed to dig into so far of the EP makes me curious to hear the rest, so it seems safe to say it’s doing its job. The PR wire sent the album info along:

Debut LP from Shudder released October 24th

Edinburgh guitar/drums two-piece Shudder release their self-titled debut album on October 25th, on cassette and download via Bastion Records.

The album constitutes the band’s first full-length release following its well-received split CD release in 2014 with fellow Edinburgh band Sectioned. Culled from live practice-room recordings and mixed to quarter-inch tape with minimal processing, the resulting record is an honest and raw portrait of Shudder’s explosively spontaneous brand of lo-fi, soulful drone. Darkly melodic in the face of its bleak dissonance, the album inhabits a world that owes as much to the melancholy acoustic sounds of the likes of John Martyn and Fahey as it does to more immediately obvious influences such as Swans, The Birthday Party and Kowloon Walled City. From the frantic energy of pre-release single “Scarlet” to the relentless and apocalyptic barrage of “Silently”, the record enacts its stories of lust and loneliness through a broad, cinematic spectrum of dynamics and emotions.

The band will be playing live throughout Scotland and the rest of the UK throughout 2016, with a follow-up release planned for later that year.
