Chubby Thunderous Bad Kush Masters Sign to Riff Rock Records; Premiere “Mother Chub” Video

Posted in Bootleg Theater on November 29th, 2016 by JJ Koczan

chubby-thunderous-bad-kush-masters-700

Man, that new Chubby Thunderous Bad Kush Masters video must really be something if they taped over the Beavis and Butt-Head appearance on Dave Letterman to save it. The theme? The ’90s. A distinct VHS grit pervades the clip for “Mother Chub,” from the London trio’s 2015 debut EP, Earth Hog (review here), and as the band get down like they’re in a Dr. Dre video from 1993, that could hardly be more appropriate.

You’ll note the bounce gesture — perfectly timed — the slow-motion mugging for the camera, and the general freaking out that Chubby Thunderous and a slew of similarly corpsepainted, tye-dyed, headbanging compatriots engage. It’s called charm, kids. Charm and riffs, and the UK party sludgers have both in spades.

In addition to premiering the “Mother Chub” video, today Chubby Thunderous Bad Kush Masters — the three-piece of guitarist/vocalist Owen Carty, bassist Will Hart and drummer Mark Buckwell — announce they’ve signed with Riff Rock Records for their next release. They’ll have a split out early in 2017 and after that set to work on their debut full-length.

Being picked up by Riff Rock makes them labelmates to Vodun, with whom they’d seem to share an affinity for coldcream as well as tonal heft. Chubby Thunderous are maybe a little less prone to taking themselves seriously, but as “Mother Chub,” which was the penultimate of the five tracks on Earth Hog and the longest of them (also featured on a Riff Rock compilation last summer; streamed here), demonstrates, they’re not just screwing around either.

If you’re not looking forward to an album from these cats, you should be, and “Mother Chub” offers plenty of reasons why.

The band was kind enough to comment on signing to Riff Rock Records. Their words follow the video below.

Please enjoy:

Chubby Thunderous Bad Kush Masters on Signing to Riff Rock Records:

“We’re psyched and honoured to be joining Riff Rock Records. They totally get that we’re trying to do something a little different with the band… We want to create a rad vibe that’s a little less serious and hopefully a lot of fun. If we can convince one diehard metal fan to buy a tie-dye t-shirt at every show then that’s our job done. We have a split EP coming out around the start of next year with some good friends of ours and then we’ll focus on finishing our first full album. Love ‘n Kush!”

The Clamps Sign to Heavy Psych Sounds; Blend, Shake, Swallow Due Jan. 2017

Posted in Whathaveyou on November 29th, 2016 by JJ Koczan

Even as the label’s reach continues to grow, Heavy Psych Sounds keeps one foot firmly planted in its native Italian underground. In Jan. 2017, it will release the second full-length from Bergamo speed-rocking three-piece The Clamps, who, formerly aligned with countryman imprint Go Down Records, issued their debut, Deadly Kick for a Fat Fucker, in 2013. The new album is titled Blend, Shake, Swallow, presumably in reference to the band’s preferred method of consuming protein powders — I don’t know that, but it’s the world I want to live in — and though no audio has surfaced from it yet, you can find the artwork around if you’re not up to your quota yet today on cartoon tits. They’re never hard to find.

Announcement of the signing follows, including a teaser of tour dates to come. Dig it:

The Clamps – Blend, Shake, Swallow (Heavy Psych Sounds)

HEAVY PSYCH SOUNDS Records & Booking is stoked to announce a new band signing: THE CLAMPS

The Clamps band was born Bergamo in 2012, when Ben, former guitar and vocal of the Winter of Souls, and Bely, former bass and vocal of the Jolly Power, began jamming together to make some rock’n’roll. They soon got the right groove and the heavy dirty sound they had in mind; the only thing missing was a drummer to beat hard and rough on the drums. Few weeks later, Marcy, former drummer of the Hypnotic Hysteria, joined the band. The line-up was done, essential and powerful. Fat guitars, distortions, screams, hard beats on the drums: tons of ideas came out, and riffs soon turned into songs.

The Clamps were ready to share the stage with bands such as Hookers, El Camaro, The Sewergrooves, Valient Thorr, Los Fuocos, Gonzales, Nashville pussy, Wild eyes, and more, and in summer 2013 entered the studio to record their first album DEADLY KICK FOR A FAT FUCKER, twelve tracks of a vicious fat sound squeezing stoner, speedrock, punk and rock’n’roll. The future is still to be written. Stay tuned and rock on!

The second album BLEND, SHAKE, SWALLOW is out in January 2017 for HEAVY PSYCH SOUNDS RECORDS.

The Clamps will hit the road soon to promote the new album ..stay tuned!

Year of the Cobra Premiere “Persephone” Video

Posted in Bootleg Theater on November 28th, 2016 by JJ Koczan

year-of-the-cobra

Seattle duo Year of the Cobra released their debut full-length, …In the Shadows Below (review here), precisely one month ago today via STB Records. It’s a record that benefits both from scope and force as the bass/drum outfit of Amy Tung Barrysmith and Jon Barrysmith put to engaging use both the rawness that a two-piece construction can offer and a corresponding melodic breadth that, while nascent as one might expect in a debut, already marks significant progression from Year of the Cobra‘s 2015 first EP, The Black Sun (review here). Emphasis on both can be heard, as well as seen, in their new video for “Persephone” from the album.

Filmed earlier in November at The Funhouse in Seattle by Dead Cowboy Productions, it’s essentially a performance video with the studio verson of the track layered over, but to go with all that slow motion and black and white whathaveyou, one finds the fervent groove of “Persephone” itself. The leadoff for side B of the …In the Shadows Below vinyl, the song named for the goddess of the underworld and springtime is fittingly vibrant in its thrust, with Amy and Jon locking in shifts between righteous punkishness and dense nod, which can also be seen manifest in the audience in front of them that night, significant in their number, consumption and engagement.

Year of the Cobra were out earlier this year alongside Mos Generator, with whom they also released a split, and have been kicking around the Pacific Northwest with them as well for a couple post-Thanksgiving shows this past weekend. The two bands will head into California and back next week ahead of Year of the Cobra announcing more dates for 2017, which would seem to be impending.

In the meantime, my understanding is STB‘s numbers are low on the Die Hard and Obi-strip vinyl editions of …In the Shadows Below, so if it’s something you’ve been hemming and hawing on, that might be worth taking into consideration.

En route to one of those shows this weekend, Amy Tung Barrysmith was kind enough to offer some comment on the track and their intent behind it. That and current live dates follow the clip below.

Please enjoy:

Year of the Cobra, “Persephone” official video

Amy Tung Barrysmith on “Persephone”:

Persephone is one of my favorite songs to play. We wrote it about two weeks before we went in to record our full-length and had a ton of fun playing around with the idea of doing something that touches on our hardcore background, but then settles into a killer riff. This video was recorded at our record release show on Nov. 12, 2016.

Live footage was on 11/12/2016 at the Funhouse in Seattle, WA. Filmed and edited by Tyler Wilson and Dead Cowboy Productions. “Persephone” is a track featured on “…In the Shadows Below” which is available now on STB Records.

Year of the Cobra live:
12/2 – Seattle, WA. @ The Tractor – 99.9 KISW Presents
12/7 – Eugene, OR. @ Old Nick’s Pub w/ Red Cloud and Aerial Ruin
12/8 – Sacramento, CA. @ The Starlite Lounge w/ Mos Generator
12/9 – Arcata, CA. @ The Alibi w/ Mos Generator
12/10 – Medford, OR. @ Johnny B’s w/ Mos Generator

Salem’s Bend and The Rare Breed on Tour this Week

Posted in Whathaveyou on November 28th, 2016 by JJ Koczan

Los Angeles heavy rockers Salem’s Bend and The Rare Breed both have new albums out. In the case of the former, their 2015 self-titled debut has been newly reissued this fall via Ripple Music, while for The Rare Breed, it’s their own debut, Looking for Today, which came out in September to wide acclaim. The shows they’ll partner up for this week have been dubbed the Ripple Road Fest, which is an interesting prospect in itself. This time it’s just five gigs, but one could easily imagine a “Ripple Road Fest” turning into a thing. Maybe annual?

After all, why not? Not like the label doesn’t have enough bands across various strata at this point. I kind of like the idea of them heading out under a single banner. Makes sense from both a branding and a rock and roll standpoint, and as we all know, those are the two things that make the world go ’round.

Conan Announce March 2017 European Tour

Posted in Whathaveyou on November 28th, 2016 by JJ Koczan

Conan‘s third album has taken them around the world. They’ve done Europe, North America, Australia. Have they been to Japan yet? If not, they’re sure to go at some point, and early 2016’s Revengeance (review here) is a powerful vehicle to propel them, showcasing the raw assault that’s always been and one suspects will always be at the core of their sound while also emphasizing growth within their aesthetic that’s an underrated but ever-present facet of what they do. They’ve got a good track record by now of releases in even years, so I wouldn’t necessarily expect to hear something new from them in 2017 at least in terms of a complete LP — though one never knows — but when they get around to their fourth outing, look out.

They’ll continue to support Revengeance into the New Year, as the PR wire brings word of another European run, this one headlining alongside Downfall of GaiaHark and High Fighter. Dig it:

They will be joined by special guests DOWNFALL OF GAIA, Welsh progressive-power-sludge band HARK as well as Hamburg’s finest sludge, heavy stoner and doom outfit HIGH FIGHTER!

“We are looking forward to getting on the road again to cast forth a swarm of riffs at mainland Europe! Allied with our friends in Hark, Downfall of Gaia and High Fighter we will defeat all of your end of level bosses.“ CONAN comments about the upcoming tour.

Comacozer, Astra Planeta: The Navigational Mind

Posted in Reviews on November 28th, 2016 by JJ Koczan

comacozer-astra-planeta-700

It’s almost 100 percent certain that’s their origin, but I don’t think it’s appropriate to call the five tracks on Comacozer‘s debut LP, Astra Planeta, jams. There are moments that definitely give an air of spontaneity to the outing, whether that’s the initial unfolding textural nod of “Saurian Dream” or the guitar-led flourish that factors so significantly into closer “Hypnotized by Apophis,” but the course overall feels plotted, and with the blend of psychedelic and heavier impulses that the Sydney-based trio have on offer throughout the 41-minute HeadSpin Records LP, presented in clear/black or clear/purple gatefold vinyl with art by Fever Dog guitarist Danny Graham, there’s some measure of comfort in that.

Of course, Comacozer aren’t exactly entering into their first album blind. Astra Planeta follows behind two EPs in 2014’s Sessions and 2015’s Deloun that wound up combined and pressed to vinyl as — wait for it – Deloun Sessions, but where that was very clearly drawing a line between two early outings, Astra Planeta draws a significant amount of its purpose from exacting a linear flow across its two sides, split with three cuts on side A and two longer ones on side B, opting it would seem for maximum immersion at all times, whether the source of that is Rich Burke‘s willfully-meandering guitar, Richard Elliott‘s patient basslines or the steady push in Andrew Panagopoulos‘ drumming that seems to hold these proceedings together, giving a song like second track “The Mind that Feeds the Eye” a sense of build late and adding direction to the record as a whole.

The opening that “Saurian Dream” and “The Mind that Feeds the Eye” give to Astra Planeta is key to understanding that direction. In listening, I’ve been trying to determine the source of what I’m hearing so distinctly as an earlier My Sleeping Karma influence. It seems to be in some of the minor-key Easternisms early in “Saurian Dream,” blended with Western heavy psych impulses, and no doubt part of the connection stems from the fact that both groups are instrumental, but I think it has even more to do with the smoothness in Comacozer‘s tones. Layers of watery effects from Burke‘s guitar and the depths in Elliott‘s bass as heard just past the midpoint of the opener as it comes more to the forefront of the mix join together to craft a hypnotic impression that, while still figuring out some elements of its approach — one hopes that growth is a lifelong process for the band only beginning here — is marked in its effect on the listener in a similar manner as the German masters of the form.

comacozer

Where Comacozer distinguish themselves is in their immediate drive to push beyond this root inspiration, drawing from it the fluidity from which their debut very much benefits and then suiting that to the purposes of their already-noted instrumentalist songwriting, whether that’s the linearity of “The Mind that Feeds the Eye” or the more rhythmically-minded, open structure of “Navigating the Mandjet,” which follows and closes out side A with Panagopoulos expanding the percussive scope amid more adventurous arrangements of guitar, tapping sitar-esque feel and wah-soaked bass as handclaps assure a duly human feel beneath and alongside the earlier ceremonial thrust that gives way to funkier terrain as the three-piece make their way into the second half of the song, which is the shortest on Astra Planeta at 6:21.

It’s fitting for the overarching progression of Astra Planeta that the two lengthiest pieces should follow. One might have a difficult time saying “Illumination Cloud” (8:18) and “Hypnotized by Apophis” (11:38) go further out than any of the first three tracks, since the basic cosmos-bound flow remains largely consistent, but with more time at their disposal, Comacozer do get a chance to show more of the aforementioned spontaneity. Burke‘s solo late in “Illumination Cloud,” which if it isn’t improvised is a close enough approximation over the steady groove offered by the bass and drums — Elliott‘s bass takes over circa 7:30 after that solo drops out and offers a moment to genuinely appreciate his tone shortly before the song ends — as well as in the thicker, early Natas-style fuzz of “Hypnotized by Apophis,” which settles into a march in its second half only after a satisfyingly exploratory midsection in which the low end again shines as the guitar noodles-out in trippy fashion.

Granted, it might ultimately be a familiar blend of styles — heavy, psych, some underpinnings of stoner and doom — but as with any encouraging debut, Astra Planeta presents a telling glimpse of where Comacozer are coming from sound-wise and gives listeners a chance to speculate on where and how they might develop going forward. As to that, the most engaging facets of Astra Planeta prove to be its ultimate immersion, its willingness to subtly engage with expanded layering and arrangements, its tonal warmth and the chemistry beginning to take shape between BurkeElliott and Panagopoulos. So long as Comacozer can maintain those going forward, the rest should take care of itself naturally, and particularly as naturalism seems to be such a focus for them on Astra Planeta, there should be little to worry about in that regard.

Kal-El Sign to Argonauta Records; Astrodoomeda out in 2017

Posted in Whathaveyou on November 28th, 2016 by JJ Koczan

With two full-lengths already under their belt, Norway’s Kal-El have been picked up by Italian imprint Argonauta Records for the release of their third. It’s been given the charm-laden title Astrodoomeda and though there isn’t a solid drop date for it as yet and the band are reportedly still in the studio, they have two new videos for tracks that will be featured on the finished product, including the rather bold Kyuss cover “Green Machine.” That and the original “Mothership” can be sampled below, and it’s worth noting that their second LP, Ecosphere, came out via respected Berlin purveyor Setalight Records in 2015.

The PR wire has all the details:

kal-el-photo-by-toffa-berg

NORWEGIAN STONER ROCKERS KAL-EL SIGN TO ARGONAUTA RECORDS

Kal-El is the fuzzed-out step-child of hard rock and heavy metal, often with hints of psychedelic and blues rock as well as doom metal. Songs typically feature a bass-heavy groove, detuned guitars and mind-expanding lyrics.

Formed in Norway back in 2012 by members from Theatre of Tragedy, Six Eyes Lost and Desspo, they started rehearsing for the debut record shortly after that, growing up not just as a band, but as a little family as they found themselves around Norway on different gigs and venues.

The album “Pakal” was released on Wormhole Death Records 26th of May 2014, the video for Fire Machine 26th September 2014, and Pakal was released in Japan on Wormhole Japan 24th September 2014. Second album “Ecosphere” was released on Setalight Records 22nd of August 2015.

Kal-El are now recording the very new album to be released by Argonauta Records in 2017. Be prepared for a stunning blend of Black Sabbath meet Monster Magnet meet Nebula!

The band says: “We are proud to be a part of the Argonauta Family, and we look forward to release our 3rd album “Astrodoomeda” through this label in 2017. Gero has a solid promo package going, and we really miss that, so signing with him was a naturally choice. “Astrodoomeda” is going to be a bit heavier than any of our previous releases, but we do believe we keep the essence of Kal-El with us here as well with different songs and different moods throughout the album. The new record has been a slow process where it has been recorded at different sessions through the last year and a half and even as we speak”.

You can already have a taste of the new stuff of the band by hearing the song “Mothership” and “Green Machine” (Kyuss cover), both to be featured in “Astrodoomeda”.

Desertfest Berlin 2017: Mars Red Sky, Samsara Blues Experiment, The Well, Tuber and Wucan Join Lineup

Posted in Whathaveyou on November 28th, 2016 by JJ Koczan

desertfest-berlin-2017-banner

Let’s get one thing straight: I really want to go to Desertfest Berlin 2017. For one thing, I’ve never been, and quite frankly I’m more than a little ashamed of it at this point. I spent about two days in Berlin over a decade ago, and aside from the raging jetlag — one did not know at the time to simply stay in one’s own timezone; also I was drunk like the entire trip — found the city to be beautiful, a little sad in the way cool cities are, and welcoming.

But even putting the palce itself aside, Desertfest Berlin has been going on for years now and it’s always been just out of my reach, right there on the horizon. I’ve been to the London incarnation of the festival and wouldn’t mind getting back there either, but to cross this one off my list would be big, especially since as this lineup continues to come together it’s looking more and more admirable. The chance to see Samsara Blues Experiment on their home turf? Come on.

Five bands added in the second lineup announcement, as the PR wire informs:

desertfest-berlin-2017-first-poster

Desertfest Berlin 2017 – 5 new Names on the Bill (Mars Red Sky, Samsara Blues Experiment, Tuber, Wucan, The Well)

DESERTFEST BERLIN 2017 – APRIL 28-29-30

Hey everybody! We are glad to get back to you today with a new batch of bands to announce for our 2017 edition of DESERTFEST BERLIN! Alongside previously confirmed LOWRIDER, TOUNDRA, ECSTATIC VISION, THE COSMIC DEAD and SATAN’S SATYRS, we are thrilled to welcome aboard five new stunning acts:

MARS RED SKY (FR)
We are stoked to have Mars Red Sky back for next year DESERTFEST! The Bordeaux three-piece played the very first edition of our festival in 2012 when they were just promoting their self-titled debut album. They always showed “a penchant for 60s space rock filled with doomy tones and tempos, accentuated with pop sensibilities” (The Sludgelord), and 4 years later, after touring relentlessly, they pushed boundaries further into a colossal heavy sound by releasing their third full-length, “Apex III (Praise for the Burning Soul),” an album that represents the most significant sonic progression the band has made so far, forging grandiose and hypnotizing thickly produced songs. Their show is going to be a crazy psychedelic trip and Mars Red Sky will be your tour guide!

SAMSARA BLUES EXPERIMENT (D)
It is always a pleasure to have Samsara Blues Experiment at DESERTFEST BERLIN. Founded in 2007 by guitarist/singer Christian Peters and completed by bassplayer Hans Eiselt and drummer Thomas Vedder, they are one of Berlin underground scene’s pride, and a household name in the “stoner scene” in general. Playing a mixture of stoner rock, psychedelic blues, Indian raga, thrash metal and traditional folk, the trio is currently working one a new album, their long-awaited fourth one, which should be released around next spring… “Good tunes come to those who wait” guys!

TUBER (GR)
Tuber is an instrumental band from Greece blending post, stoner, desert and space rock with a sublime psych edge. They recorded their first self-titled EP in 2011 and their stunning debut album “Desert Overcrowded” in December 2013. Two and a half years removed from the release of this full-length, but having built a steady following all the while (and after traveling in 2015 to play Freak Valley), Tuber hit the European roads for the very first time this past spring and clearly made an impression! So if you guys want to enjoy some rock aesthetic flirting with psychedelic atmosphere and a touch of romantic mood, do not miss them!

WUCAN (D)
The Saxonian band Wucan entered the German Rock Scene with a splash by releasing their first EP “Vikarma” in the fall of 2014 and their full-length debut “Sow the Wind” in August 2015, to excellent critical acclaim. Deeply rooted in the 70s, the band’s fresh sounding kaleidoscopic Rock Fusion of groovy Funk, Psychedelic, Hard Rock and Kraut Rock, and enigmatic live performances have proven that the band is capable to hypnotize a receptive audience and take it onto a journey into a rockworld of it’s own creation. The band is currently writing their follow-up second album (tentatively titled “Reap the Storm”) scheduled for a spring release…

THE WELL (US)
Austin-based power trio The Well redefine heavy rock by merging massive riffs with sophisticated melodies. Their progressive sound stems from a nostalgic desire to blend different musical styles as diversified as Joy Division to Blue Cheer. As fans of cult horror films, they embrace the sinister, revel in dark themes and find inspiration in haunting echoes. Thet have created a sound that reflects doom, punk and horror all rolled together in a ghostly rock soundtrack. After releasing their debut album “Samsara” in 2014 and toured on it relentlessly, they dropped a furiously strong sophomore effort “Pagan Science” last month, and can’t wait to share it with the European crowd!

There are still 20 more acts to be unveiled, including all our headliners, so stay tuned! Next announcement will be on Friday 2nd of December. Meanwhile do not miss your chance to be part of the amazing DESERTFEST BERLIN experience… Check out our Website to get your tickets, or the links below in this release! We were sold out last year in February, so better be quick!
