Immediately upon release of their fifth long-player, Stellar Prophecy, on May 15, Roman trio Black Rainbows will commence touring the hell out of it. The three-piece, who recently announced the addition of bassist Giuseppe Guglielmino to the lineup with drummer Alberto Croce and guitarist/vocalist Gabriele Fiori, have arguably done more to advance the cause of Italian heavy rock than any other band in the past decade. The stiffest competition would be Ufomammut, whose sonic influence is wider at this point and who’ve been around longer, but I think Black Rainbows have the edge when it comes to supporting countrymen acts and relentlessly being on the road, spreading the word about what they do, whether it’s through their own actions or Fiori‘s work with his label and booking arm, Heavy Psych Sounds.

That’s admirable, but not necessarily a guarantee the record’s going to be good, right? Fortunately, Black Rainbows at this point have a track record of delivering on that level as well. Last year’s Hawkdope (review here) was a psychedelic highlight, pushing their sound even further than the prior 2012 outing, Supermothafuzzalicious!! (review here), had gone, and moving into fluid realms of ’70s-style boogie and space rock. Stellar Prophecy offers these in kind with a naturalist approach to heavy riffing, Fiori and company fleshing out their songs with effects wash or tight rhythms as need and whim drives them to do, but rounding out each side of the vinyl with an expansive vibe that adds to the overall breadth. “Electrify” appears at the very start of the record and is as much a statement of intent as an introduction to the raw riffing that follows, tripping out over consuming fuzz and languid vocal echoes that donate a vibrant hook to the space ritual underway in the track.

And as an introduction to the energy and wash that Stellar Prophecy has in store, there’s not a lot more one could ask of it. The video for “Electrify” colorizes and spaces-out performance footage in a way that very much suits the catchy proceedings in the song, so yeah, have a blast.
