Black Wizard Premiere “Vivian Girls” from New Waste

Brash Vancouver rockers Black Wizard make their debut on Listenable Records Feb. 12 with their third album, New Waste. It is not to be confused with the old waste.

If there’s any resonant doubt that modern heavy rock is the inheritor of the methods and boozy intentions of classic metal, the dual guitar antics Black Wizard proffer throughout New Waste tracks like “Revival,” “Harsh Time,” “Eliminator,” “The Priest” and “Final Ripper” should lay them thoroughly to rest. While basking in the hazy light of an increasingly prevalent (particularly in the Pacific Northwest) post-Red Fang neo-dude party vibe, the four-piece of guitarist/vocalist Adam Grant, guitarist Danny Stokes, bassist Evan Joel and drummer Eugene Parkomenko also pay due homage to Thin LizzyIron Maiden‘s gallop and Judas Priest‘s fist-pump-ready groove. Their tones and upbeat style find breadth in the inclusion of organ on the slower “Laughing and Lost” and the Spanish guitar ending of “Vivian Girls,” the plus-sized riffing of “Unnecessary Evil,” but they never go too far from that metallic underpinning, tying the album together as a unified whole even as individual songs stand out across its span.

The band made their self-titled debut in 2010 and followed that with the self-released Young Wisdom LP in 2013, so that they’d have a solid sense of where they want to be aesthetically makes sense — the album is not raw anymore in style than in substance — and an abiding lack of pretense throughout lends even familiar motor-riffing elements a cblack wizard new wasteertain charm. I doubt Black Wizard would tell you they’re reinventing the wheel so much as using it to head out to the proverbial highway. After a raging one-two punch in “Revival” and “Harsh Time,” “Laughing and Lost” delves more into classic rock balladry, but “Vivian Girls” blends impulses well en route to the centerpiece “Eliminator,” which rides forth in catchy course while reinforcing the brain-cell destruction and the momentum of the album alike. The subsequent “Unnecessary Evil” cuts the tempo smoothly to set the table for a side B interlude and brief respite in “Waiting For” prior to “The Priest” — guess we know who we’re waiting for — and the latter track picks up where “Harsh Time” left off, it and “Final Ripper” providing a bookend to New Waste as a closing salvo that seems to mirror the opening one.

A central difference, though, is that the final pair of tracks, “The Priest” and “Final Ripper,” are shorter than were “Revival” — the longest song on the album at 6:39 as well as the opener (immediate points) — and “Harsh Time,” and that speaks to the momentum that Black Wizard build up as they run through this material. Listenable is doing a vinyl release as well, but New Waste feels structured as a front-to-back, linear listen too, and as it moves along, it continues to gain in its overarching thrust as well as its scope until the band brings it back around to finish with a tighter incarnation of where they started. Easy to imagine them bleary-eyed, coming to at its conclusion from blackout-induced lost time, but I think there’s more consciousness at work in New Waste than they might want the listener to believe. A record so fluid doesn’t just happen, and whether they’re willing to admit it or not, these guys know what they’re doing.

I have the pleasure today of hosting “Vivian Girls” as a track premiere. Please find it below, along with some more background on the band, and enjoy:

BLACK WIZARD: New Waste Full-Length To See Release Through Listenable Records Next Month

BLACK WIZARD was forged in 2009 by four high school friends. Founding members Adam Grant and Eugene Parkomenko were both working underwhelming construction jobs at the time, passing the days to the sounds of Thin Lizzy, Deep Purple, Witch, and Electric Wizard. Heavily motivated by the thick, weight sounds of bands like Bison and 3 Inches Of Blood monopolizing the scene at the time, “The Wiz” was born. Having followed a true DIY aesthetic, the band has released two full length LPs along with a 7″ single independently and sold over five thousand copies worldwide.

More recently BLACK WIZARD has kept busy touring Canada and the United States and spent last Fall on a month-long trek through Europe. Having shared stages with the likes of Sleep, Uncle Acid, Corrosion Of Conformity, The Shrine, Atomic Bitchwax, Weedeater, Saviours, Anciients and so many more, the band shows no signs of slowing down anytime soon. No one is safe.

All Them Witches Post Lost Jam “Surface to Air Whistle”; Reissuing Lightning at the Door

Posted in Bootleg Theater on January 28th, 2016 by JJ Koczan

all them witches

News to me that All Them Witches were reissuing their second full-length, Lightning at the Door (review here), but I can’t really argue. That record originally came out via their Bandcamp with zero ceremony, zero promotion in November 2013. It was nearly another full year before it got a physical pressing, and now that they’ve released a follow-up in the form of last year’s Dying Surfer Meets His Maker (review here), it seems only fair that the sophomore outing gets its due. Certainly it was a watershed moment for the Nashville four-piece, who began ranging beyond their hometown to support it before making the jump into becoming a touring act — they’re on the road now and have been since earlier this month (dates below in the US and UK/Europe) — and signing to New West Records for the release of the latest album.

From what I can gather, it’s New West behind the Lightning at the Door reissue as well, and that’s also fair enough. I’ve seen it listed as a CD or an LP that comes with an extra 7″ of two bonus tracks, one of which is “Surface to Air Whistle,” the jam that you can hear below. I’d imagine it squeezes pretty tight onto a 7″ platter, but fair enough if it fits. The other bonus track is “Romany Dagger (Remended),” which I’ll assume is an expanded or somehow rebuilt version of that album track. I’m assuming both are on the CD as well as that extra single, but don’t quote me on that. I’ve also only been able to find the release listed in the UK, so don’t quote me on its Stateside availability either. In fact, don’t quote me at all on this one. Clearly I have no fucking idea what I’m talking about.

Cool jam though. Dig in:

Deserfest London 2016: Final Headliner Announced and Lineup Complete

Posted in Whathaveyou on January 28th, 2016 by JJ Koczan

Well, that’s a wrap for Desertfest London 2016… unless, you know, you count the actual holding of the fest in April. Which you should probably count. Okay, maybe not a wrap at all.

But the lineup is complete, and that’s something in itself. Spanning genres and geographical borders, I feel like this year’s Desertfest London perfectly emphasizes just how much this festival has grown in its five years into this encompassing celebration of heavy rock, sludge and doom, holding firm to its local roots even in this last batch of bands, while also expanding its reach in pulling legendary acts from beyond the UK and Europe as well.

Russian Circles will headline the second of Desertfest London 2016’s three dog nights, and a slew of others have joined the bill as well, including Mondo DragStinking Lizaveta, underrated Londoners Crystal HeadSiena Root and many more details below:

DESERTFEST LONDON: lineup complete with Russian Circles headlining the Saturday!

Russian Circles to headline the fifth edition of DESERTFEST LONDON this spring in Camden!

It’s finally here: your complete DESERTFEST LONDON 2016 line-up has arrived! Chicago’s majestic instrumental progsters Russian Circles are set to headline the Saturday night with Pelican as lead support. Not only that, but we have the mighty forefathers of doom Trouble celebrating their 30th anniversary with a very special show for us, just before Electric Wizard bring down the Sunday night curtain in style! See you all in April…

Desertfest is all about our passion for heavy music, our love through deep-rooted friendships and above all, our collective appreciation of diversity, musical skill and the broadest range of powerful performances…

RUSSIAN CIRCLES are not from the desert, they’re not exponents of standard 5-minute, 4-4 rock songs and they expose their soundscapes exclusively for us to form our own interpretations without the mask of any form of lyrics. Shrouded in darkness, illuminated only by flashes of white light and the occasionally projected visual, they’re performers worthy of headlining any show in front of an audience who have the ability to think before they roar. With fellow instrumental crusher-destroyers PELICAN primed and ready as their main support, get ready to see, smell and FEEL the sheer weight of these swirls of Siberia.

Desertfest is also proudly joining in with Chicago doom legends TROUBLE’s 30th anniversary celebrations. Original members Bruce Franklin and Rick Wartell will be touching the sky with their classic dual guitar leads and now-established front man Kyle Thomas (Alabama Thunderpussy, Floodgate, Exhorder) will be tempting the crowds with his prayers for the dead, it’s going to be a real mind bender!

The rest of final announcement for Desertfest London 2016 goes as follows:

Camel of Doom Release Terrestrial Feb. 8

Posted in Whathaveyou on January 28th, 2016 by JJ Koczan

UK experimental outfit Camel of Doom return next month with Terrestrial, their first new full-length since 2012. Led by former Esoteric guitarist Kris Clayton, the band follow-up their Psychodramas LP (review here) by pushing further into slow-motion cosmic churn, heavy and expansive in kind. As the two new songs streaming below, “Cycles (The Anguish of Anger)” and “Euphoric Slumber” make plain, if it’s terrestrial at all, it’s extra-terrestrial. Call it progressive doom, call it space metal, call it whatever you want, but it’s definitely Camel of Doom‘s own.

Album is out Feb. 8 on Solitude Productions. Judge them not by their moniker, open your mind, and dig in below:

camel of doom terrestrial

Camel of Doom ‘Terrestrial’ – Out 8th February

“The brand new full-length album by the British experimentalists. Starting with psychedelic stoner doom metal, Camel of Doom have come to make sophisticated music mixing doom death metal and sludge doom metal, with a tendency towards psychedelic effects and energetic riffs. Combining groovy moments with lengthy atmospheric riffs, adding industrial motifs to their masterpiece, the musicians paint a wide scale picture of cosmic chaos and, at the same time, harmony expressed with a share of melody. Also noteworthy is the breakthrough the band have made in forming a dense sound, fully disclosed in ‘Terrestrial’.”

After several months of pre-production, we entered Priory Recording Studios in January 2015 to record and begin mixing the record with guitarist/vocalist Kris Clayton’s former Esoteric band-mate, doom supremo Greg Chandler. These tracks represent the results of this session.

The band originally formed in 2002, and performed a handful of shows around the UK in 2004/2005. After a short hiatus, the band continued as a one man project of founder Kris Clayton, then playing with UK doom band Esoteric. Following the release of the Psychodramas LP in 2012, the line-up was expanded with the addition of bassist Simon Whittle. For the recording of Terrestrial we were assisted on drums by the extremely capable Thomas Vallely (Lychgate, Omega Centauri). The band has recently become a three piece with the addition of Ben Nield as a permanent drummer. This has allowed the band to play live once more, with shows planned throughout 2016 and beyond.

Valley of the Sun Taking Preorders for Volume Rock; Album Due April 29

Posted in Whathaveyou on January 27th, 2016 by JJ Koczan

valley of the sun (Photo by Nikita Gross)

I’ve got no problem getting down with some new Valley of the Sun. The Ohio-based heavy rockers made a bold statement with their 2014 debut full-length, Electric Talons of the Thunderhawk (review here), in more than just its title, building on the efficiency of songwriting and righteous performances of their prior short releases and sustaining the vibe throughout the long-player without reservation. They nailed it, is what I’m saying. Totally nailed it.

They’ve got a follow-up coming this Spring called Volume Rock that’s available now to preorder through Pledge Music. Like the debut, it seems Volume Rock will eventually be out through Fuzzorama Records, but they basically have an avenue set up for direct-to-the-band support, and that’s not a bad idea either.

Dig it:

Valley of the Sun: Volume Rock – EARLY PRESALE

Hey everyone, Ryan and Aaron from Valley of the Sun here. We’ve got a new album coming out later this year, it’s called VOLUME ROCK. As the title suggests, it’s meant to be enjoyed loud–we wanted to make sure your neighbors, people in the car next to you, and that guy reading the newspaper on the train next to you hear it too.

We took a couple of years to write this thing because we wanted to get it right. We wanted to make a rock and roll album that stands out, songs that you can sing along to that have you banging your head at maximum velocity.

We think this is the best record we’ve ever recorded but we’ll let you be the judge of that. VOLUME ROCK is 9 tracks of rock fury that will officially come out 29 April, 2016. You can pre-order early and get some cool bonus content in the meantime. For example, the first video from the album can be seen here on Pledge before it’s premiered just by ordering. We’ll also make other updates with more exclusive content available only to those who pre-order here on Pledge.

Fuzzorama will have pre-orders up in the next couple of months that ship from Europe.

King Giant Announce Shows with Pentagram

Posted in Whathaveyou on January 27th, 2016 by JJ Koczan

Virginian outfit King Giant are set to provide support for doom legends Pentagram in March for a handful of shows in their home state, Tennessee and North Carolina. The band currently have vinyl in the works for their third album, 2015’s Black Ocean Waves (review here), via Greek imprint Dia de Los Muertos and that’s set to release in Spring in multiple configurations. Opening for Pentagram‘s a pretty good way to lead up to that, and as of the last time I saw themKing Giant continued to straddle the line between dark Southern heavy rock and doom with the individualized moodiness that has pervaded their studio work, so all the better. They should do well in that spot.

KING GIANT To Support Pentagram On March Run; Vinyl Version Of Black Ocean Waves In Production

Northern Virginia’s doom metal marauders, KING GIANT, have been confirmed to support the mighty Pentagram on a run of live dates in March, while also announcing that the vinyl version of their latest album, Black Ocean Waves, is being prepared for release.

KING GIANT’s third LP, Black Ocean Waves, thunders with forty-five minutes of the band’s brooding, doom-drenched take on Southern metal, once again delivering gritty tales of regret, shame, revenge, and resolution. Recorded at Magpie Cage Studios in Baltimore, Maryland, the album was engineered by Jawbox architect, J. Robbins (Clutch, The Sword, Wino) who later mixed the album and supplied Hammond organ on the track “Blood Of The Lamb” and background vocals on “Trail Of Thorns.”

Following its initial CD and digital release in June 2015 through an alliance with the band and distributor The Path Less Traveled Records, Black Ocean Waves is now being prepared for release on vinyl. The wax is being handled by Greece-based Dia De Los Muertos Records – a subdivision of Smash Records – in a run of 300 copies; 100 copies each on black, beer, and purple/red color schemes. The album will see release in early Spring, with a final release date and order links to be available in the coming weeks.

Ahead of its vinyl release, March will see KING GIANT providing direct support for legendary doom kingpins, Pentagram. These performances are confirmed to take place in Virginia Beach, Richmond, Carborro and Knoxville, March 10th through 13th.

Jerkagram Premiere “Anteater” from New Album Outer Limbs

Posted in audiObelisk on January 27th, 2016 by JJ Koczan

jerkagram

Los Angeles duo Jerkagram release their second album, the Toshi Kasai-produced Outer Limbs, on Friday. And eight-track offering, it effectively bridges a generally-pretty-wide gap between technical prog and atmospheric post-rock, the fraternal twin two-piece of guitarist/vocalist Derek Gaines and drummer/vocalist Brent Gaines developing pieces smoothly but establishing a multitudinous intent across the full-length’s span, whether it’s the serene noodling of the penultimate “Two Pillars,” on which someone sure seems to be playing bass, or the jagged earlier twists of “Cloud Builder,” which is almost straightforward in its verse/chorus structure, but even so retains a complexity in its execution that’s nigh on blinding.

Following 2014’s Tired Old Horseshit EP and that same year’s Let’s Talk About Us debut long-player, Outer Limbs begins with the whistle/snare march of “Coat of Arms,” brandishing aggressive fight-song methods as a misdirect before the 10-minute “Lyra” takes hold, devoting its first half to subdued ambience before a more insistent progression takes hold, joined by vocals, ending in a psychedelic burst of noise, horn-ish sounds and chanting to herald the dawning of some alternate Age of Aquarius before “Anteater” hits with its subtle build along a linear path based around an omnipresent central figure, swelling and getting noisier as it passes through its intro and early verses. It’s neither the first nor last moment on Outer Limbs that feels genuinely experimental in the sense of the Gaineses trying things out in the studio and seeing what sticks, but that’s not to say it lacks cohesion or underlying purpose either.

jerkagram outer limbs“Cloud Builder” picks up along similar noise-rock lines, its own repetitive core progression holding fast while choruses and verses play out around and on top of it, but “Three Pillars” takes that modus to another place, longer, more languid in its overall affect though between the intertwining guitar and drums (and, again, apparent bass) there’s no small degree of tension maintained as the song builds, crests and evens out in looping turns that eventually depart to let the drums finish alone. By this point in the record, Jerkagram can go just about wherever they want, and they take the sides they’ve thus far presented and bring them together on “Orphaned Origin,” spacious early but building an increasingly prevalent push that caps with a layered squiggly lead and moves into crashing final measures that give way to the pastoral, also instrumental “Two Pillars,” quiet but hypnotic in the expanding foundation of guitar.

It doesn’t seem like a coincidence that Jerkagram close the album with “Empty Gesture,” bringing back the horns (or whatever they might be) from “Coat of Arms” and, before ending with a long, sustained left-the-amp-on drone, bursting into the record’s most frenetic bout of noise, drums and guitar in full assault mode for a brief but purposeful finish. Maybe that’s the titular empty gesture in an effort to resolve the tension built up over the album’s course, or maybe they just felt obligated to end with cacophony, I don’t really know. Either way, after all they’ve been through over the preceding tracks, it makes a weird kind of sense in context this all-out blurt before it’s done. What else could they possibly do?

They say that sometimes twins develop their own language, growing up so tight-knit. I don’t know if Derek and Brent ever did anything like that as kids, but their second album makes it clear they’re communicating on a wavelength of their own.

Jerkagram are on tour starting in March. Below, you can hear the track premiere for “Anteater,” and under that, find upcoming live dates.

Enjoy:

Pinning down just what Jerkagram does is no easy task. “I never know what to tell people when they ask,” explains drummer Brent Gaines, one half of the fraternal twin duo, along with guitarist Derek. The raucous twosome is influenced by a very wide array of musical styles and philosophies, from the cacophonic yet buoyant heaviness of The Melvins to the orchestral post-rock of Explosions in the Sky to the loose jazz of Sun Ra.

Starting out exclusively as an improvisational stilted noise/free rock operation from New York, Jerkagram embarked on several tours, and came to find that their free approach was naturally gravitating towards something more foundational and song-oriented. This newfound energy for song-writing lead to the band releasing two records in 2014 — full-length Let’s Talk About Us and EP Tired Old Horseshit. Following these releases was an ambitious ten-week tour around the US, where they landed in Los Angeles, ready to tickle some more earlobes with sheepish grins.

Enter the band’s new full-length album, Outer Limbs. Recorded and mixed by Toshi Kasai (Melvins/Big Business), the record is an evolutionary refinement of their melting-pot sound. Each song has a motorik sensibility behind it and seems to grow and transition organically, yet also manages to feel unhinged and unpredictable. The interplay of sturdiness and freedom inherent in their songs, as well as the dynamics of the bludgeoning drums and ambient guitars switching roles in being the driving force behind them is what makes Jerkagram such an intriguing force — they don’t imply themselves or belong to any genre, and despite this, everything is characteristic, cohesive and thematically consistent, from the Morricone-inspired opener, “Coat of Arms,” to the frenetic yet poppy, “Cloud Builder,” to the jazz-rock closer, “Empty Gesture.”

Jerkagram plans to support the record with relentless touring in 2016, where they aim to showcase their captivating high-energy performance wherever it brings them and beyond. Outer Limbs will be available on CD and download on January 29th, 2016.

Brothers of the Sonic Cloth Announce Euro Tour Dates

Posted in Whathaveyou on January 27th, 2016 by JJ Koczan

Following up on their West Coast tour and cross-country stint with Neurosis last year, Seattle three-piece Brothers of the Sonic Cloth will head to the UK and Europe for two weeks in April. They go in support of their self-titled Neurot Recordings debut (review here), which was my pick for the best first-album of 2015, and in addition to a choice gig with Pombagira to start off at The Black Heart in Camden Town, London, they’ll wrap with a slot at Roadburn 2016 in the Netherlands, once again alongside Neurosis, who’ll be celebrating their 30th anniversary at the fest.

The PR wire counts down its own doomsday clock:

This tour will commence in London and rumble its way through France, Spain, Italy, Austria and Germany, before wrapping up with a set at this year’s edition of Roadburn, the spiritual home of all things low-end and high-powered.

BROTHERS OF THE SONIC CLOTH is the sound of earthly decomposition and planetary demise; a slow, entrancing dance towards a looming apocalypse… thick, monolithic, deliberate and devouring. Fronted by Seattle’s legendary guitarist/vocalist Tad Doyle – formerly of TAD and Hog Molly — BROTHERS OF THE SONIC CLOTH is a trio of longtime rock soldiers that includes veteran bassist Peggy Doyle and drummer Dave French (The Anunnaki). Their full-length 2015 debut maintains a long-held tradition of conjuring some of the heaviest music from the darkest depths of the Pacific Northwest.
