Realistically, it’s probably going to be a few months before Causa Sui‘s new album, Return to Sky is released. Maybe even four. This is a fact to which I’m working hard to resign myself, but if I’m totally honest, it’s not really working as I make my way through the 1:45 teaser clip they posted for the record for about the fifth time. Set to what I’ll assume is found footage, the album trailer showcases two instrumental pieces, one more free psych-jazz fading into another more desert rockin’, and both sound just about right for what the soul needs the way the lungs need oxygen.

The Danish instrumentalists’ last proper studio outing was 2013’s glorious Euporie Tide, which I didn’t hear until after the fact, but since then they’ve also issued Live at Freak Valley (review here) and a third installment of their jammy collaborative series Pewt’r Sessions (review here), and Jakob Skøtt and Jonas Munk have both had solo outings out as well. So they’ve hard been stagnant. But still, as they’ve periodically posted photos from the studio and updates about the process of making Return to Sky, it feels like a long-time coming.

Anticipation is high for this one, and I’m eager to hear how the two sides presented in this clip — along with whatever else the four-piece might have on offer throughout — play out across the album’s span.

Causa Sui consists of Jakob Skøtt, Jonas Munk, Rasmus Rasmussen and Jess Kahr, and have released eight albums since 2005. The trilogy set Summer Sessions that saw the band move away from the heavy-psych of their two first albums to more abstract, instrumental sounds that owes as much to electric Miles Davis or Can as to american stoner-rock.

Causa Sui’s sound has been described as the sound of a giant wave rolling up through the last four decades of rock.
