King Dead Premiere “Length of Rope” from Debut CD

Posted in audiObelisk on March 28th, 2014 by JJ Koczan

At 33 minutes, the self-titled and self-released debut from Pennsylvania instrumentalists King Dead sits right between an EP and a full-length outing. The trio’s sound is similarly nebulous, hovering between psychedelic post-rock, heavier amplified push and Morricone-via-Earth soundscaping, and as their first five songs showcase, they come equipped with a formidable scope. Shades of Pelican show up in the payoff to the cumbersomely-titled “As One Plows and Breaks up the Earth, so Our Bones Have Been Scattered at the Mouth of the Grave,” and when closer “God Makes a Lot of Fucking Promises” launches from its Dustbowl swirl into lumbering crashes and more vicious churn, Neurosis‘ “Times of Grace” seems a ready comparison-point, but King Dead — the Stroudsburg-based trio of four-string bassist Kevin Vanderhoof, six-string bassist Will McGrath and drummer Steve Truglio (the latter of whom, in the interest of full disclosure, I’ve known and worked with for years) — do well to incorporate these into a still-forming cohesion, boldly captured live on this self-titled.

They recorded in Stroudsburg’s Living Room on Jan. 25, so the material is pretty fresh, and whether it’s the Hex: Or Printing in the Infernal Method-style sustained nod of opener “Ghosts along the Riverbank” or the loose-string jangle of centerpiece “Length of Rope,” their contemplation comes metered out in weighted bottom-end and patient timekeeping. The middle cut strikes as the smoothest in its transitions and the fullness of its course, a build taking place over the 6:42 run while parts are intertwined, refrained and deconstructed. It happens subtly, but when the high end drops out before the four-minute mark and McGrath and Truglio carry the atmosphere on their own, the return is clearly the beginning of an apex that, save perhaps for that of the more jagged closer, is the most satisfying to be had on King Dead‘s King Dead. And while the follow it with the shortest and most uptempo song on the release, “Drowning in Dust,” even there they continue an impressive grip on the ambience, some whistling arriving late to introduce a gallop straight out of the Spaghetti West.

Tracks also work smoothly one into the next, but to give a general idea of where King Dead are at their first time out and where they might subsequently progress, “Length of Rope” finds them in an engaging balance of driving push and tidal sway. King Dead will be available on CD starting April 19. Please find “Length of Rope” on the player below, and enjoy:

[mp3player width=480 height=150 config=fmp_jw_widget_config.xml playlist=king-dead-length-of-rope.xml]

King Dead have been conspicuoulsy haunting the Stroudsburg PA area lately. Bass players Will McGrath and Kevin Vanderhoof, recruited New Jersey Transplant Steve Truglio on drums last summer, and have begun to wander around the NEPA/NJ area. Their debut record on the cusp of release, was recorded LIVE in their practice and performance home venue at The Living Room in Stroudsburg by Dave Reiser of ROCK HARD STUDIOS. They definitely have their own sound.

Call it sludge, doom, or what we like to say is spaghetti western doom sludge, it sure doesn’t sound like yer typical heavy 3 piece band these days. With virtually no vocals, aside from one song(not on the record) and a whistle solo in another, its all about dynamics and the building tempos. Creepy, dreary, sleepy and melodic riffs layered over deep bottom and pounding drums. A good soundtrack for any lethal injection event.

Graves at Sea and Sourvein to Release Split on May 13

Posted in Whathaveyou on March 27th, 2014 by JJ Koczan

So you take the reignited Graves at Sea, and you put them in the studio with Billy Anderson. Right? Fucking brilliant. Then you take Sourvein, now past the 20-year mark, and you put them in the studio with C.O.C.‘s Mike Dean. Also, fucking brilliant. Then you take the results of these sessions, slap some badass war-wolf art on it, press it to CD and LP, and presumably take the rest of the day off, because I don’t care what else you come up with, you’re just not gonna top that idea.

And I’m not saying I’ve heard any of this material yet or anything, but you’re in for a surprise if you think you know what to expect from Sourvein.

The two bands start a European tour April 10 at Roadburn, and Seventh Rule has the split out on CD and LP on May 13.

Check out the PR wire, telling it like it is:

GRAVES AT SEA And SOURVEIN Unite For A Release Of Ultimate Amplifier Worship; Preorders Available This Friday

Two of doom metal’s mightiest of feedback-laden riff worshippers – Portland’s GRAVES AT SEA and Cape Fear’s SOURVEIN – have united in sound, mind and spirit for the ultimate split of earth-smoldering amplifier worship.

GRAVES AT SEA, whose contributions leave an eerie aura complete with tortured vocals, foreboding composition, and a general sense of dread, occupy Side A. Recorded by Billy Anderson, (Melvins, Sleep, Neurosis) “Betting On Black” and “Confession” finds the all-consuming sludge for which the band is notorious, flooding in amongst the tortured howls and shrieks of vocalist Nathan Misterek.

SOURVEIN, who’ve now existed for two decades of distortion, damage and total doom, solidify Side B. With three songs produced and recorded by Mike Dean Of Corrosion of Conformity, these odes of heavy combine toxic riffs, grooves and just the right amount of psychedelic appeal.

Track Listing:
1. GRAVES AT SEA – Betting On Black
2. GRAVES AT SEA – Confession
3. SOURVEIN – Driffter
4. SOURVEIN – Equinox
5. SOURVEIN – Follow The Light

Both sides were mastered by Brad Boatright (Sleep, Beastmilk, Nails) at Audiosiege Engineering and will be released via Seventh Rule Recordings on both CD and LP on May 13th, 2014 during the two bands’ duel conquest touring Europe and prior to their appearances at this year’s edition of the illustrious Maryland Deathfest. The first pressing of the LP will be limited to 1000 copies and come available on 160-gram black wax with an included download code. Recommended for fans of Eyehategod, Black Sabbath, Electric Wizard, and all things loud and fuzzy.

Preorders will be available THIS FRIDAY (3/28) at THIS LOCATION.

On Wax: Death Alley, Over Under b/w Dead Man’s Bones 7″

Posted in On Wax on March 27th, 2014 by JJ Koczan

The label in the center of both sides of Death Alley‘s debut 7″, Over Under b/w Dead Man’s Bones, is grooved. It looks like if you were to put the needle there, past the songs themselves, something would play. I haven’t tried it, I guess because it seems like a stupid way to break your record player, but I take it as a sign that the Amsterdam four-piece — which features former members of Mühr and The Devil’s Blood — have more to say than they’ve seen fit to offer with the two tracks on the single itself. More to come, in other words. That may or may not be the case, but either way, the proto-punk-fueled loud rockers make a raucous entry on this debut, not even stopping for a breath along the way in either “Over Under” or “Dead Man’s Bones,” but peppering the rush with some heavy rock groove all the same. Their sound is natural, and the style is retro, though they avoid the trap of reinterpreting ’71-’74 boogie via Graveyard by going further into punk and pre-thrash, resulting in a sound that’s full of movement but less derivative than some of Death Alley‘s history-minded contemporaries.

For a relatively new band who just got their start last year, they know where they’re coming from, and their self-descriptor, “protopunk with a hint of psychedelics,” proves accurate across this single, which tops just over eight minutes. That’s not necessarily the whole story though, because while there’s an underlying swirl to “Over Under” and the song rounds out with some surprising vocal harmonies in a still-full-throttle bridge before returning to the winding style of the main riff to close, surely enough giving the impression of Death Alley aiming for more than just the place where neo-heavy fuzz and traditional punk rock meet. More than anything, “Over Under” is a feverish rush, and on the flip side, “Death Man’s Bones” takes that even further into distinct Motörheadery, capturing well that moment where gritty metal began to move away from heavy rock and punk and into something new. “Over Under”‘s parts flowed easily, but “Dead Man’s Bones” is more occupied with shred-topped chaos, though a tempo downshift in the second half brings more vocal intricacy and a swaggering guitar solo. Once again, there’s more going on with Over Under b/w Dead Man’s Bones than Death Alley are keen to show on the surface.

Ván Records has the single coupled with a Death Alley poster, and the band is set to play Roadburn‘s official pre-show, the Hard Rock Hideout, on Wednesday, April 9, in Tilburg, so it seems reasonable to expect more to come from the nascent Dutch outfit. As forewarning, their debut single rings loud and clear while hinting at future intrigue.

Radio Moscow Post New Single “Death of a Queen”; Magical Dirt out June 17

Posted in Whathaveyou on March 27th, 2014 by JJ Koczan

If you were to ask me what my biggest regret was about watching Radio Moscow play each night on a seven-show run, my immediate response would be, “What the fuck are you talking about?” The San Diego trio killed it every single night on that tour, and I’m glad to see they’ve posted the track “Death of a Queen” from the forthcoming Alive Naturalsound LP, Magical Dirt, because now I feel like I have a chance to exorcise its catchy bounce from out of my head. Baby Woodrose, Kicking Ass and Taking Names: Gone Yesterday, Here Tomorrow

Posted in Reviews on March 27th, 2014 by JJ Koczan

Seems likely that Copenhagen psych-garage aficionados Baby Woodrose have a considerable backlog of unreleased material. Before the band led by guitarist/vocalist Lorenzo Woodrose, also of Dragontears, released their righteously cool 2012 sixth full-length, Third Eye Surgery (review here), they preceded it with a 2011 comp of early demos titled Mindblowing Seeds and Disconnected Flowers (review here). The new collection, Kicking Ass and Taking Names, also dips back to the beginnings of the band, and from the second one unfolds the six-panel Bad Afro Records digipak (or, presumably, opens the vinyl), there’s an archival feel. Lorenzo Woodrose himself offers liner notes extolling the virtues of the B-side as an opportunity to experiment and gives recording dates and circumstances for each of the comp’s 14 tracks, spanning years from early 2002 to 2013, and as he explains it, there’s more on offer than just B-sides. The tracks “Coming Around Again” and “I Feel High” were released together as a single in 2008, and “Light up Your Mind” and “Bubblegum” came out together through Bad Afro last year. Covers of The Troggs‘ “6654321” and Otis Redding‘s “That’s How Strong My Love Is” (which Humble Pie also covered in 1973) end each half of the tracklist and represent the earliest material included, coming from the band’s Feb. 2002 first session with their original lineup. Of course, with variation in the years of release, production and lineup, Kicking Ass and Taking Names has a few notable jumps in sound, but a remaster for everything included gives some sense of flow to the collection’s 36-minute course.

Really, the structure of Kicking Ass and Taking Names isn’t that of a compilation of individual, standalone tracks, but of a previously unreleased EP plus enough bonus cuts to extend it to full-length. While they were subsequently released on singles, the first five tracks — “Information Overload,” “Good Day to Die,” “Coming Around Again,” “I Feel High” and “Making My Time” — come from the same session, recorded by the late Ralph Rjeily in 2007 and issued in drips and drabs in the years since. Those with prior exposure to Baby Woodrose‘s fervent worship of 13th Floor Elevators-style psychedelia will be right at home with “Information Overload”‘s space-rocking thrust and Woodrose‘s own howls echoing up from the swirl. I’ve always considered his style to have similar roots to those of Monster Magnet‘s Dave Wyndorf, but Woodrose‘s approach is looser, the material it tops less concerned with sprawl. “Good Day to Die” is an early highlight the energy of which is a precursor to some of what arrives later on side B’s (can you have a side B on a collection of B-sides?) “Here Today Gone Tomorrow” and “Live Wire,” while “Coming Around Again” delivers a poppier take and “I Feel High” backs it with acoustic-based lysergics, a steady undercurrent of fuzz and organ making a complex mix sound simple. That track builds but remains drumless, leaving the buzz of “Making My Time” to sum up the preceding four with organ start-stops, echoing space and an easy, right-on groove. As ever, Woodrose remains a strong presence, but I wouldn’t discount the organ work of Fuzz Daddy either, which is featured in a solo in the song’s second half.

The Skull to Release Two New Songs on April 8

Posted in Whathaveyou on March 27th, 2014 by JJ Koczan

Now a five-piece after recently adding ex-Trouble bassist Chuck Robinson on guitar alongside Sacred Dawn‘s Lothar Keller, The Skull have announced that the two songs recorded with Billy Anderson will be released as a single on April 8 through Tee Pee Records. Available for preorder as a $4 CD and a download, Sometime Yesterday Mourning c/w The Last Judgment pairs brand new material against a cover of some of Trouble‘s earliest output, “The Last Judgment” having been featured on 1983’s Metal Massacre IV comp a year prior to the release of Trouble’s first LP, Psalm 9, which turns 30 this year.

Much seems to be in the works to celebrate both The Skull’s original track and Trouble’s ongoing legacy. The PR wire has this:

THE SKULL: Release Date Revealed For Two New Singles

Worldwide Debut To Air On Heady Metal with Jeff Olson

Listening Party Scheduled In Chicago

There’s no “trouble” for THE SKULL – the heavy doom-rock band featuring original TROUBLE members vocalist Eric Wagner and drummer Jeff “Oly” Olson, longtime former TROUBLE bassist Ron Holzner and newly recruited former TROUBLE bassist Chuck Robinson, now on dueling guitar, alongside SACRED DAWN guitarist Lothar Keller – as they will unleash their two new singles recorded with acclaimed producer/engineer Billy Anderson (MELVINS, NEUROSIS) worldwide on Tuesday, April 8th via Tee Pee Records.

The “limited edition” white vinyl replica CD featuring “Sometime Yesterday Mourning” (side A) and “The Last Judgment” (side B) is now available for pre-order at Tee Pee Records (http://shop.teepeerecords.com/collections/frontpage/products/the-skull) Downloads of the singles will be available at your favorite digital retailer on April 8th.

In other news, THE SKULL’s worldwide debut of “Sometime Yesterday Mourning” and “The Last Judgment” will premiere exclusively on drummer and keyboardist Jeff “Oly” Olson’s podcast HEADY METAL WITH JEFF OLSON via InThePitRadio.com on Friday, April 4th from 7PM-9PM EST. Olson will be live on-air and field reporting from THE SKULL’s listening party that evening at the Ragnarokk Metal Apocalypse Fest in Chicago located at Reggies Rock Club where fans can purchase the CD. Olson, along with vocalist Eric Wagner, bassist Ron Holzner, guitarist Chuck Robinson, and guitarist Lothar Keller, will all be available to personally sign the limited edition white vinyl replica CD.

“Sometime Yesterday Mourning” is a doomy metal song written by Keller, Holzner and Wagner that showcases the genre pioneers’ distinct style while “The Last Judgment” is a “revisiting” of the classic TROUBLE song of the same name that originally appeared on the classic 1983 “Metal Massacre IV” compilation album.

“I think “Sometime Yesterday Mourning” is the perfect song for THE SKULL to lead with and there’s a reason why it was the first song we completed as a band,” commented Wagner. “It’s about coming to a point in life when it’s just time for a new beginning, a fresh start if you will, and finally coming to terms with the past.

“Being that it is the 30th anniversary of the release of the song “The Last Judgment” — the first song we ever released — we thought it fit perfectly for the B-side and considering what “Sometime Yesterday Mourning” is about, it made sense to me. You have to go through your past to get to your future.”

Drummer and keyboardist Jeff “Oly” Olson on Chuck Robinson’s addition to the band:

“We are excited and honored that Chuck Robinson has accepted our invitation to join the band. He is the perfect fit for THE SKULL.”

“I’ve always enjoyed rehearsing with Chuck as he is disciplined with his art. He’ll surely bring a bonus to the band with his experience as a former TROUBLE member and as a seasoned musician who utilizes both his talented song writing ability and his exceptional recording skills. We are looking forward to tour with our brother again.”

Olson added, “Chuck is more then a bass player. He grew up playing guitar with his father, also a very talented guitarist. Eric, Ron, Lothar, and myself know that Chuck is more than capable for the job. He’ll bring chops with a heavy groove to our debut album, as well as bring his charisma to the stage.”

THE SKULL has confirmed the following three shows.

May 09 – Cleveland, Ohio – The Grog Shop
May 10 – Chicago, Illinois- Reggies
August 29 – Montreal, Canada – The Wings of Metal Festival

The Wings of Metal Festival will be a headlining performance consisting of two sets. The first set will be a performance of TROUBLE’s 1984 debut album “Psalm 9” in it’s entirety. The second set will include a performance of their newly recorded songs as well as TROUBLE classics.

THE SKULL will follow the release of the new songs with its debut full length LP, tentatively slated for release this autumn.

THE SKULL is:

Eric Wagner – vocals
Jeff “Oly” Olson – drums/keys
Ron Holzner – bass
Lothar Keller – guitar
Chuck Robinson – guitar

Wovenhand Unveil “Hiss” from Refractory Obdurate; New Album out April 29

Posted in Bootleg Theater on March 26th, 2014 by JJ Koczan

I have a particularly hard time speaking about Wovenhand in terms other than hyperbolic praise. The David Eugene Edwards-fronted genre-defiers will release their new album, Refractory Obdurate, through Deathwish Inc. and Glitterhouse Records on April 29. It’ll be Wovenhand’s seventh full-length, following 2012’s The Laughing Stalk (review here), which continued to push their sound into new places in terms of influence and arrangement, the band getting progressively heavier, more joyful, more intense as they go along. Their style, though it always shifts from record to record, is distinctly their own, and the new single “Hiss” follows that pattern with a fullness of tone and spaciousness in the recording.

On the sheer level of its chugging riff and furious tension, “Hiss” is up there with the heaviest output Wovenhand have had to date, though in the bigger picture of their work overall, that’s a tertiary consideration. I wouldn’t expect “Hiss” to speak for the entirety of Refractory Obdurate more than I’d expect the river to speak for the lake, but it’s a clear signal that Edwards as the principal songwriter has maintained a fascination with what weighted sound can bring to Wovenhand‘s aesthetic. They continue to be on a level of their own in both their mastery of what they do and their drive to push beyond that mastery, out of their comfort zone, and into new ground.

Release info follows the video. Enjoy:

Wovenhand, “Hiss”

Brought to you by a partnership of Deathwish and Glitterhouse Records, release dates are as follows:

April 29th: Deathwish Release Date (World)
April 25th: Glitterhouse Release Date (Europe)

Wovenhand is a band led by dedicated life-musician and lyricist, David Eugene Edwards. Over the last two decades, his prolific work in both Wovenhand and the legendary 16 Horsepower has influenced and inspired a generation of musicians throughout the expansive alternative music world.

Wovenhand cannot be described in traditional terms. Their sound is an organic, weavework of neo-folk, post rock, punk, old-time, and alternative sounds. All coming together as a vehicle for David’s soulful expression and constant spiritual self exploration. Sometimes sad and sorrowed and at other times uplifting, Wovenhand are always unforgettable in spirit and sound.

“Refractory Obdurate” is the latest album from Wovenhand. Joining David on this album are longtime percussionist Ordy Garrison, along with musicians Chuck French and Neil Keener (Planes Mistaken For Stars, Git Some).

“Refractory Obdurate” is a moving masterwork that shows Wovenhand exploring louder roots hinted at on prior albums. As they maintain their melodious course, “Good Shepherd”, “Field of Hedon”, and “Hiss”, stomp forth with a newly amplified punk rock heart. While “The Refractory”, “Salome”, and “Obdurate Obscura” each ascend epically into a multi-layered haze. Ten songs in all, “Refractory Obdurate” plays as a beautifully crafted patchwork that transcends genres and expectation; a true artistic achievement, that only Wovenhand could offer.

Track Listing:
01. Corsicana Clip
02. Masonic Youth
03. The Refractory
04. Good Shepherd
05. Salome
06. King David
07. Field of Hedon
