It was probably the most mixed Roadburn lineup I’ve ever seen.”

I’m the one who writes “the literature” (aka program), and to be honest there wasn’t a formal idea at all; it was something I came up with after Walter showed me the definitive lineup!

Having already covered Voivod from a long-time fan perspective in last year’s program, I knew that I wanted to incorporate astrophysics, sci-fi and the Outer Limits theme in this year’s piece, but the question was “how, exactly?”

Usually, these things come together very quickly but not this time. After working on five or so drafts over the course of a couple of weeks, at some point I gave up and turned my attention to the other articles. Then out of the blue one Sunday afternoon everything suddenly fell into place in my mind and the “episode guide” was born — along with the heavier/lighter idea.

“And now you know…the rest of the story” :-)

Yeah man, that Danava comment threw me as well…especially considering the rivers of drool that the hipster magnet known as Graveyard elicits around here…yikes!

…and how do you get stoked on a band named “Conan?” The “fat guys in hoodies” thing pissed me off from the jump!

Fair enough. I’ll say my understanding of what they do has always been limited and maybe being on the other side of the country, I’m seeing them in the wrong context. They’ve just always come off that way to me.

Wow, Danava as hipster metal? There are sooooo many other bands more deserving of that label. They are great guys making killer music.

Another monster review. I could almost hear the opening rolling thunder of “Quantum Mystic”.

In defense of Danava: Hipster talk is easily earned, but at least in the PNW, they have quite an honest metalhead following and high praises from within their musical hometown. As far as I can tell, they’re pretty genuine despite their popularity or fanbase.
