Roadburn 2010 Report Pt. VIII: The Pieces of Your Little World

8:04PM: Hotel Mercure, Tilburg, The Netherlands: I thought if I left Death Row, who opened the main stage, 15 minutes before Fatso Jetson went on in the Green Room, I’d have plenty of time to get a good spot right on the balcony for shooting video. Wrong-o, though I did manage to get some pics, for all that’s worth. I forgot that in Europe people actually give a shit about desert rock.

Fatso Jetson were tight as hell. They sounded like they were just making the songs up on the spot, Mario Lalli waving his arm to direct the rest of the band into the next part. They called themselves a bar band. I’d be happy as hell to be at that bar whenever they’re playing.

And now that I think of it, Death Row were pretty killer too. Though I’ve seen him walking around, I haven’t had the courage to go up to recent Obelisk commenter Joe Hasselvander and say, “Hi, I’m the guy who printed all that crazy shit Bobby Liebling said about you.” I don’t expect that gumption to appear anytime soon.

Brant Bjork in the Midi Theatre was depressingly good. So good it hurt to watch, and the crowd response was astonishing. After shit like this, that guy must hate touring the States. I think of the time I saw him at Club Midway — a basement, literally and figuratively — in NYC. There were maybe 35 people there. The Midi Theatre is not a small place, and they were lined up outside waiting to get in. I had to leave, making sure to pick up my umpteenth YOB shirt as I went. I won’t get to see those guys because it conflicts with Garcia Plays Kyuss, but I’m sure they’ll survive without my encouraging presence.

Time is short before I need to get back, so I’m going to leave it at that and see if I can find some dinner or a bottle of water at least. I am, it’s worth noting, completely sober, and it’s all this cold’s fault. If I drink when I’m sick I either go to bed or get whiny, and given my druthers I’d do neither for the time being. So off I go. More later.

Thanks for the updates despite you feeling pants with virus and being busy with music. Much appreciated. Looking forward to hearing what you thought of Garcia Plays Kyuss. I personally have substantial reservations but we’ll see…

Enjoying everything you have written so far, par for the course.

However, between all this traveling and reporting, are you finding the moment to pass out your business cards?
