I know right? So far everything seems fine btw Melky and the organization...and the fans. It'll be interesting to see what he can do in the postseason (#assumption)
There's some crazy talk that maybe the Gs should take another flyer on Sanchez... Couldn't hurt and they could always shitcan him. long relief lefty out of the BP? But then there's Penny and Mota should be due back soon.

The Giants/Braves game tonight was the tale of two games. The teams end up going 1-1 after nine innings (Mike Minor really stepped up for ATL) and then decide to put 11 runs up in the next two extra innings. Crazy, but glad to see the Giants prevail. They've already achieved the series win with Philly next. The Giants broadcasters were inferring that Brandon Belt might be on the block for them. I don't dig that at all, but they're a lot closer to the club than I am.

Weird game. Who saw that coming? a 6 run 11th off the bats of Crawford & Blanco. Heh. I like the Braves, too...when SF isn't playing 'em. Prob my 2nd fave NL team. (it helps that Freeman, McCann, Heyward...and Hudson are all starters for my fantasy team)
I also hope Belt isn't on the block, he still has a lot of promise. I'm hearing more squabbling about Scheirholtz, who isn't happy with his reduced role (don't blame him)...and of course the usual malcontents are on again about Lincecum, like they were in August 2010. (I was one of them back then)

Yeah, I saw a quote from Chipper today being critical of Melky's celebrations in last night's win. He said that was the whole reason Melky wasn't still in Atlanta. Coming from someone like Chipper, it means something. I think the ingrate comment wasn't completely out of left field from me. Tough to gauge what an idiot like that could do toward having a healthy clubhouse.

Seems like Schierholtz is greasing up his ride out of SF. They always seem to have an overabundance of OFs.

when you don't win, there are always excuses why a guy was shipped out.
team chemistry is one of the most over-used sports cliches.

winning cures all ills, perceived or actual.

I'll still take Chipper's word over armchair opinion, cliche or not. He's seen plenty of clubhouses, functional or not (as well). Every one of the teams that cast off Cabrera could really use that guy right now. That alone speaks volumes.

He had the same problem with the Yankees. They traded him to get Robinson cano away from him. He fits really nicely in that giants lineup and I hope he realizes it

Drove up to Detroit this week to check out Trout and Trumbo in action...those dudes were all business during BP...focused on mechanics and situational hitting, whereas a lot of players goof off or go through the motions...Trout had 4 hits and Trumbo went deep in the 13-0 skunk...both more than merit the hype w/ Trout looking like a one-of-a-kind talent...the guy's got it all, and he makes it look easy...I highly recommend going to a game when the Angels swing through your general region...kind of like going to see a great band - well worth a long drive.

Rockies trade Jeremy Guthrie to KC for Jonathon Sanchez.

This should probably work out better for KC where Guthrie has a far better chance at rebounding now that he won't have to pitch at Coors anymore but hopefully Sanchez can turn things around coming from KC to Denver much like De La Rosa did. Probably the main benefit for Denver is the savings of $1 million dollars and the removal of Guthrie from the rotation.

The mega-trade between Toronto and Houston doesn't seem to do much for the Jays. They really need a top-shelf starter and apparently they're sending Happ to the pen.

The rumors are saying Hamels signs with the Phils, which would prove frog correct over 99% of the pundits. Is it a good move? Debatable. They're going to have a TON of money locked up for a long time and they're already in last place with this existing lineup.

After last nights loss to the Giants I think the Phils will be making some deals soon. They have a few guys besides Hamels who are free agents at the end of the year. Even if they don't resign Hamels I don't think they will trade him. Any chance of signing him in the off season will be thrown out the window if he is. However, guys like Blanton, Victorino, and maybe Polanco can be traded. Although, they won't get much back in return for them. I also think there is a chance that Pence gets traded. He might be able to bring a nice package since he is still under contract for next season.

looks like victorino is likely going to the yankees. at least that is the rumor that i hear. polanco isnt much of a 3rd baseman but someone might use him as a super utility guy. hamels will probably be staying with the phillies. the phillies will not compete in the next few years without him. howard may have a few good more years but utley is done. somehow the need to get dom brown in the majors and producing. id like to see them get that guy Nick Castellanos from the tigers system

ESPN's Jim Bowden reports the Phillies and Cole Hamels are working on a long-term extension "which could end up" in the range of six years and $142-144 million.
This is considerably higher than the six-year, $130 million contract that was reported earlier this week. The Phillies have intensified their efforts to sign Hamels, though it's not yet clear if this would be enough to get it done. The reported offer would pay Hamels significantly more than the $127.5 million extension the Giants gave Matt Cain earlier this season.

Damn...was hoping Hamels would be on the market - at least for the sake of options for the Cards, who have zero chance at either Dempster or Garza...apparently, they're taking a hard look at a deal for King Felix (which would be well worth the price of prospects and Allen Craig), but given their recent slide, I'm starting to wonder if the Cards will be sellers instead of buyers at the deadline.

I was gonna say there's no way that Hamels is worth more than Cain, but the numbers are almost damn near identical actually. In fact Hamels has more wins, but Cain has so many tough losses due to inept offense that it's almost a wash.

Ryan Dempster appears to have been traded to Atlanta for Randall Delgado.

Ichiro was traded to the Yankees for cash and two minor leaguers.

Annibal Sanchez and Omar Infante were traded to the Tigers for Jacob Turner and 2 minor leaguers.

Dempster has not approved the trade. Still a Cub at this point, as is Garza.

I truly thought both would be gone by now, obviously Dempster's injury held up his being moved.

Kinda saddened that ichiro was traded, not sure why, though.

Here's hoping that Tigers-Marlins deal works out as well for Detroit and as poorly for Miami as the Miguel Cabrera -Andrew Miller/Cameron Maybin did for each team.

That Ichiro deal is a shocker. Doesn't seem like they got much of value in return and are paying the Yanks some money to cover his salary. They must have made that deal as a gesture of good will towards Ichiro which is kinda cool if so.

The Ichiro trade is kind of sad. He really held the cards in that equation and I always thought he had too much pride to allow himself to be traded. At this point I thought sticking with a single team in MLB was something he wanted to do. And he could easily command another contract (bad for the team) from Seattle if he wanted. He took the high road though and recognized where the team was at and requested a trade. If he ends up winning a title in New York (pretty good chance), it'll take a little tranish off his legacy. The Yankees are pretty much the best team for him right now, from a fitting in perspective.

I don't blame Dempster for turning down the Atlanta trade. I wouldn't want to play/live in fuckin' Atlanta either.

I don't think that Detroit trade is enough to put them in the Yankees-Rangers-Angels echeleon.

Weird thing to be the face of a franchise for years and then literally one day you show up to the park in the other guys uniform. And of course, that's exactly what the Yankees need, another 2500 hit machine to stack the deck. They've got the AL East sewed up as it is...I don't care about their "losing streak". Or those crazy Orioles. Meanwhile the Red Sox pitching suffers fiascoes that bring grown men to tears. Ichi-Ni-San, we will see you this weekend. Wild card still in reach! If Boston can't get the division they should at least try to get angry here. Get wild!

This is GREAT news for Ichiro and his fans if it allows him to earn his ring. The Mariners BLOW. Great field though. I find it mindblowing that he's playing his first game with the Yankees tonite in Seattle. Might even hit a home run, haha.

Marlins going in full out sale mode:

Quote:

Ken Rosenthal of FOXSports.com reports that the Marlins are fielding trade interest in right-handers Josh Johnson and Ricky Nolasco, third baseman Hanley Ramirez, first baseman Carlos Lee and left-handed reliever Randy Choate.
The Marlins traded Anibal Sanchez and Omar Infante to the Tigers on Monday and should continue to sell off parts in the days ahead. However, Rosenthal notes that they intend to "make baseball trades, not simply dump salaries." Johnson would likely bring the most in return, but Scott Miller of CBSSports.com reported late Monday night that the Marlins would prefer to keep him. The 28-year-old right-hander is under contract for $13.75 million next year, after which he becomes a free agent.

Quote:

Ken Rosenthal of FOXSports.com reports that the Marlins will "absolutely try and try hard" to move closer Heath Bell.
Good luck with that one. Bell has been a disaster in the first year of a three-year, $27 million contract, posting a 6.05 ERA and six blown saves. Naturally, the Marlins aren't optimistic they'll be able to find a taker.

Josh Johnson is an intriguing name. Texas should give Miami a call.

Quote:
Ken Rosenthal of FOXSports.com reports that Ryan Dempster would prefer to be traded to the Dodgers.
The Cubs and Braves reached agreement Monday on a trade that would send Dempster to Atlanta for 22-year-old right-hander Randall Delgado. However, Dempster has 10-and-5 rights and can veto any deal. His desire to pitch in Los Angeles, which is closer in proximity to his home in Vancouver, explains the current hang-up. The problem is that the Cubs prefer the Braves' offer and the Dodgers are trying to trade for other starting pitchers.

Kind of interesting to see Miami dismantle after being one of the larger players in this last offseason. I really don't blame them though, because that team has been a mess and they've still got some really nice pieces.

The Houston fire-sale continues with them sending Wandy Rodriguez to Pittsburgh. Good to see the Bucs as players finally.

So MLB Network is reporting that the Phillies are going to extend Hamels for $137.5 MM over six years. Second largest contract given to a pitcher behind Sabathia. Crazy. I think this pretty much guarantees that at least Lee will get unloaded. Maybe Victorino too. Lee back to Texas seems the most likely scenario. It seems that Nolan Ryan senses that their window might be closing.

The report is Hamels was resigned for 6 years $144 million. I love that they signed him but even I think that is way too much. I don't think any pitcher is worth that kind of money. Now I think the Phillies should try trading Cliff Lee. Like Mr. Red said, the Rangers would be the perfect destination for him. He familiar with that team, his contract runs for another 3 years so they don't have to worry about him leaving via free agency and the Rangers need an ace to anchor that staff. It's a perfect fit.
