I actually dig vocalists whose voices scrape my insides like ragged nails: Axl, Edgy from Burning Witch, or King Diamond. The more annoying and piercing, the better.

I wonder if he just quit after the Use Your Illusion albums, if some of you would still feel this way. Appetite For Destruction is a great album. No filler. Can't say that about too many albums from the 80's.
