Well, I didn't get my beers on tap!

Young Henry's on the AHB Competitions forum wrote:
Congratulations to our Inaugural Home Comp champion Brett Norman who wowed the judges with his Newtown Brown. Lots of bold Centennial hop flavour and aroma. We will keep you all posted when and where this will be available. Honorary mentions go to Geoff Hughes for his Punkin Chunkin (described by the Head Steward as one of the best pumpkin beers he had ever tasted) and Paul Ryan for his Smoked Chipotle Porter (I generally hate chilli beers but this was lovely). Special thanks to those who went to the extra effort of doing up interesting labels and/or creative descriptions. They helped us get through the 46 individual entries we received. The story of Bongin Bay particularly had us laughing. Thanks to the Home Brew stores that promoted the comp and collected entries. Finally, thanks to all who entered. Never fear, there will be another competition before the year is out...when we some up the courage to do it all again.

Haven't had any other feedback thus far, I'm hoping I'll get an email from them soon.

Anyway, this is what they thought was so funny. Must have an easily pleased sense of humour.

I'm kind of pumped up to do a few BJCP rules comps now and get some proper feedback.

Not sure. I haven't heard back from them. I've been kind of busy since I got back, so I'll have to reach out again and see what gives. I'll let you know if I am heading back out that way - hope so.

I dig the artwork on that one a lot. Enjoyed the beer when I bought a sixer of it, though didn't personally find it caps worthy. But I think I am missing the boat on Victory overall, most people seem to speak a lot higher about them than me.

Either way, that sure beats what I am currently drinking.

Currently going dry as I try to survive this 16 week science course compressed into 4 weeks. Its an absolute killer and I need to remain on the top of my game.

Had the Black Diamond Brandy Barrel The Twelve off a tap. Man, wow. A little sweet and a quad Belgium with nice complexity. Some raisins hovering about, a little fruity but a real conversation piece. Really nice\great stuff. The Brandy is there. 11% schooner $7.50\ouch but really worth it that day! The fresh tap probably helped. Must have another. Kinda reminded me of Hitachino Stout in a strange way, clean but thick. Some malt some hop great balance. I think it the first Quad I've had.

Port Brewing Anniverrary DIPA from a tap. Love the brewery. I thought this one was subtle but I guess in that way it's sessionable. I'll be back to have another.

Elliot Bay Brewery in Seattle has a great 3 location restaurant\brewery. All their beer are good and many are organic. Growlers are 1\2 off Mondays. A great neighborhood joint that has many devotees. Had their Double IPA 10% schooner. Really good. All their beers are good and solid construction week in and week out.

"sessionable"? You're crazy. That thing is 11%!
It might be more balanced, but that's a world away from sessionable.

If anyone is thirsty for some Russian River sours we're putting Supplication and Consecration on tonight.

We're celebrating our 15th anniversary with ten days of special tappings.
Last Friday: South Pacific Pale ale...5.3% NZ & Aussie hops, primary bittering hop was Nelson Sauvin.
Last Sat.: Port Anniversary Triple IPA
Yesterday: Stone Double Bastard & 2007 Russian Imp. Stout
All were still pouring as of last night.

Tuesday: Free BBQ w/ 200 pounds of awesome beef brisket starting around 6pm. Tapping a Belgian IPA (7%) brewed at Pikes Peak Brewing.

Wednesday: special brews from Dry Dock Brewing

Thursday: Pulling a couple kegs out of the vintage cellar for this one like a 2009 Beast Grand Cru & a 2007 Czar

Friday: Bull & Bush Legend of the Liquid Brain Anniversary Edition Steve has had a 2gallon Cask from the original Pre-release of Stranahan’s Colorado Whiskey sitting in the Bull & Bush Cellar filled w/ Liquid Brain for the past 6 yrs. Chris and the Bull & Bush Team, Gabe Jeff & Erik, blended that cask with batches of Liquid Brain that were 7yrs old (aged in Burgundy wine Barrels), a 2 yr old fermented with a different yeast strain & aged in a Buffalo Trace barrel, and a ‘Double Barrel’ batch aged 1 yr in a Pappy van Winkle Barrel & 1 Yr in a Buffalo Trace Barrel. The original plan was to
have the years add up to 15, but we got carried away and it came out to 17, oh well.

Saturday: New Belgium ‘LOVE’. Chris went up to Ft. Collins & tasted a few Foeters (large wood casks) of sour beer & picked Foeder #2 (consistently one of the best single foeters in their stable) for this year’s batch of ‘LOVE’ Come & Get It!

Sunday: We’ll be hooking up a few different kegs of Dogfish Head beer like Hellhound On My Ale, Bitches Brew & just to top it off, how about some 120 Minute IPA

If I wasn't in the middle of a hellish 16 week compressed into 4 weeks course I'd check it out tonight...been wanting to check out both forever, just never enough to spend the $13 and + for the 12 oz bottles, so on draft would be perfect...but time does not permit. I am jealous.

Bristol Beer Factory have a new brew on called 'Bitter Californian', I think it's aiming for some sort of balance between a West Coast IPA and a traditional English bitter...

No idea how it's come out but there's barrels in a few pubs round here fairly soon so I'll report back once I've had a swallow!
Don't know if they're planning to bottle too, some of the 'special' brews they do don't make it to bottle.

I think the current drive is their keen SoCal brewer who's working with some British beer-fogies.
Makes for an interesting portfolio!

Had some Supplic & Consec on tap last weekend. Two of my favorite 'Tions.
Damn SL I need to get my ass back to Denver some day and visit you.

Ballast Point just released Dorado, their Imperial IPA a couple days ago. They haven't made it in years so it's good to have some. 10% ABV, West Coast IPA Style.

Had a bunch of Yuengling over the weekend. Nothing fancy, but a nice treat here in the midwest nonetheless. This weekend hopefully I'll get to dive into some of the beers my buddy brought back from his recent trip to the baltimore area (he brought back $900 worth of beer!!!)
I've also got a 3 Floyds dark lord ive been sitting on since the beginning of May. I really want to check that out.

That would be fun.
I just took a short trip to Chicago 'cause my boss said, "hey, wanna go to Chicago?"
We rented a car and drove to Wisconsin and bought all the New Glarus Belgian Red (kriek) and Raspberry Tart we could find. Stuffed 14 bottles in my suitcase and have given a few away to favorite spots in town. Gotta spread the love.

I also brought some Creme Brulee Stout from Southern Tier. I love that shit. It smells so freakin' good.

Had one of these last night. 17% and in the tradition of Angel's Share. Not the same, but in that ballpark. Didn't drink like it was that strong, but you did get a slight alcohol burn on the very end.

Geez man, wash your glass, every bubble is a shit germ.

Not been very active in the commercial beer tasting stakes lately, but have been brewing every week like clockwork trying to take advantage of the prime ale fermenting temperatures of winter in Sydney. Got a couple of enteries for a comp lined up in the next 2 weeks and have made contact with the local brewing club to get some proper feedback on my beers.

Oh yeah, my local bottle-o has been getting Ballast Point Big Eye IPA in. Apparently the importer has an exclusive contract to bring in the Big Eye IPA and the Big Eye IPA only. Dunno whether to laugh or cry about this. It's a pretty damn good IPA, but as in the above post, they do other, better beers too.

Your point is valid, NCR, but those nucleation sites also release gas/aromatics that greatly contribute to the enjoyment of beer.
Absolutely we should all drink out of clean, dry glassware. But it doesn't hurt to have one of those etched glasses for a continuous stream of bubbles.

Have had an absolute potpourri of beer tonight:
these were very small pours (like 2-4oz.):
Dogfishhead Bitches Brew
Dogfishhead Hellhound On My Ale
Pikes Peak Belgian IPA
Odell South Pacific Pale Ale

with dinner:
New Belgium/Lost Abbey Collaboration - Mo Betta Bretta
Green Flash - Rayon Vert
Leopold Bros - Blackberry Liquer over vanilla ice cream
Bonator Double Bock from a brewery in England that I can't recall.

ND: Alpine Duet

Yeah, I find that when I drink from my good glasses, the head retention of some lower carbed beers is pretty poor, but they retain the fizz for longer because they are dead smooth. I've got some standard 425ml Pub Schooners and Nonic pint glasses with an etched bottom that make any beer hold a great head, but if you leave it too long, it goes dead flat quickly.

Now you're getting technical!
I drank loads of London Pride (good) and Tanglefoot (mediocre) out of tins in a field this weekend, it was good, but they were overshadowed by the good good Somerset cider (preferably with a bit of rum in it).

Paul, that Odell South Pacific sounds interesting. How was it? Tropical Fruity? Was it bottled or just made special for Falling Rock?
I assume you had the New Belgium version of Mo Betta Bretta? How did you like it?
We had the Lost Abbey version out here this weekend. Two versions of the same collaboration.
Alpine, nice. What does ND mean?

Now drinking?

This weekend:

Friday:
Timothy taylor's Best Bitter. Dark and hoppy. Great.

Saturday:
Weedy night. One bottle of Bath Ales Dark Side creamy stout

Sunday:
Football night. Started early, I think the roll call was
Kronenburg 1664 Lager (drinkable very cold)
Sam Adams Lager (better)
Sambrooks Wandle (local summery light ale)
Then Adnams Broadside in the pub watching England fail to put two consecutive passes together. The beer was better than the football.
