There have been many classics in the golden era of video gaming. The older game music were pretty much forced to have great melodies because the tech sucked back then. But the newer games are able to have amazing compositions within the game.

As a nice comparison, I'm posting some old and new.

I'll just post a playlist for a preliminary Guild Wars 2 soundtrack, cause it's just awesome all around.

I didn't own the Halo soundtrack CD, but my buddy did and I'll be damned if we didn't just chill to that music sometimes. It was dynamic, catchy, and all-together well performed.

I bet if someone put it on around me right now I might scream "GET THE SHOTGUN" and proceed to try and throw frag grenades with my invisible controller as the flood overtakes us. Nothing like legendary CoOp runs to cement...or ruin a friendship.

Golden Axe was for sure Doom.

Altered Beast was cut from the same cloth

Sonic had some of the best tunes as well. Listening to it now give major nostalgia.

You needed a better title, cause yours just sucked lol.

It was a good thread, but it didn't incorporate the more modern classics such as:

The greatest game of all time...

Modern video gaming leaves me cold. I enjoyed using my own imagination to overcome the inadequacies of the graphics - it forced your mind to think abstractly; those green and brown pixels are TREES! I, also, liked the quests and storylines that were fun and simple. Modern gaming is the product of post 90's violence and malcontent gen Y paradigm shift.
^ all my opinion and i'm sticking to it =P

Honestly, you're right about some of the games being made right now. There are some quality gems though. Portal and Portal 2 are amazing games though. If you're looking for adventure/RPG games, you need to wade through a lot of shit to find the quality ones.

If you're looking for imagination, try out Limbo, and Shadow of the Colossus. You can play the original Deus Ex without killing a single person and get all philosophical with the plot and theme of the game. Mirror's Edge is a good game too that has you running to avoid combat and only fight as a last resort.

If you don't care about graphics and want to use your imagination, play Minecraft. Dear Esther is more of an interactive experience rather than a "game". Salem is dubbed "The Crafting MMO" and focuses on an H.P. Lovecraft style of world set during the colonial era of the US. You go around gathering, surviving the wilds and building your town.

There are just so many games I could recommend to you, but that's enough for now lol.

Myst is another series of games that you might enjoy

Sotc is one of my favorite games.

Another thing is..I have Skyrim for the xbox 360 and it's a great game, but there's just too much to do and too much to remember.
Sitting there for an hour trying to figure out how to make a sword with iron ingots and leather straps - uff!

New ZELDA: skyward sword, theme is epic!

Rock had the best music (arrange mode) in Soul Edge..

This one is catchy

Wow, didn't know Lanegan did a tune for Rage. I like it.

The unreal Tourney theme always reminded me of an 80s action flick with Schwarzenegger.

Aye, it's the song that plays during the end credits. It's the only good thing about that game's "ending".

I've written a trilogy of songs dedicated to Golden Axe, Altered Beast and Rastan with my new band Fortress of Narzod. I obviously love classic fantasy themed computer games.

I've got a really, really rough version of Golden Axe online here in which I incorporated the Golden Axe theme:

Cool thread.

My phone is the music of Guardia Castle, 1999 from Chrono Trigger. Good story, eh? I really love those ol Squaresoft soundtracks.

Xenoblade: Chronicles has its moments as far as composition.

I was debating on whether or not to include sports games or not. It almost seems like cheating to include Fu Manchu from the Tony Hawk games, or Throttlerod from the NHL game. I justify not including them because those songs weren't made for the game.

Cooler than Pirates of the Caribbean.

Starts and ends with Nobuo Uematsu for me, but I've always been a Final Fantasy nerd.

Anyway:
