Wow, Kyle Williams, wow. I realize he was only filling in for Ginn but what a bad game. Especially the punt gaffe.

I enjoyed both games, personally. Just not the endings. I think this is the worst possible Super Bowl matchup for me as I don't like either team. No clue who I will root for.

The St. Petersburg Times has confirmed a KGW-TV Portland report that the Bucs are in the process of finalizing a contract to make Chip Kelly of Oregon their next head coach.
Many were skeptical of the story when it first appeared on the KGW-TV website, but beat reporter Rick Stroud confirms it's legit. Per Stroud, the sides are hopeful a deal will be completed "in the next 24-48 hours." Kelly met with Bucs management last week. Similar to Pete Carroll when he left USC for the Seahawks, it's believed Kelly will be or is currently being investigated for NCAA violations. He may be bolting just before Oregon is hit with sanctions.

I don't pay attention to college football so I have no clue how he should do. But given the overall track record of college to NFL coaches odds are against him I would think.

It'll be interesting to see what SF does with Smith this off season. A return to earth with today's performance but I'd guess he should stick around. Between last week's performance, the fact that he brought the team to one game from the Super Bowl and Kyle Williams will be the scapegoat for this loss, and the fact that with that defense they don't need the most expensive and greatest QB he'll probably get himself an extension.

Is Michael Crabtree still a 49'er? 'Cause he was pretty invisible this playoff run aside from that one 4 yd TD.

Bummed about the Niners as a lifetime fan, but what a heart stopping game, and the better team won. Crabtree was non-existent, and Kyle Williams is Billy Buckner, but he made some nice plays this season.
Hopefully this group can stay somewhat intact and Smith deserves a contract.

Pitchers and Catchers in less than a month.

Crabtree and the other receivers were non-existent because of the poor reads and tunnel vision by Smith to Davis. I get the connection, but you have to spread the ball around. Gore was a beast, the defense was a beast and they come out short because of Alex Smith..and this after a decisive performance a week ago. He think he definitely took a step back after playing so awesome the week before. just look like the dreaded 'game manager' for most of that game. One 3rd down conversion aint gonna cut it either.

im sorry if alex smith didnt play like a pro bowl qb in some pretty harsh conditions but you cant put this on him at all. maybe he had vernon davis tunnel vision but it was rare that he had anyone open. this loss was not on alex smith at all because he didnt fumble the punt return. alex smith did what he had to do. kyle williams just made a mistake and they paid for it. its not like the 49ers are going anywhere. they will be back. do you people forget that the giants have a really good secondary?

Here's one take on Alex Smith's performance, putting the blame on the offensive struggles on him. And it doesn't even address the fact that he couldn't convert on third down conversions all game. What was the final tally, only one 3rd down conversion for the 49'ers?

Quote:
Alex Smith completed 12-of-26 passes for 196 yards and two touchdowns as the 49ers fell to the Giants 20-17 in Sunday's NFC Championship Game.
Smith made two pinpoint touchdown throws to Vernon Davis, but was otherwise largely to blame for San Francisco's offensive ineptitude. He reverted to having shell-shocked pocket presence, often holding the ball too long and consistently throwing inaccurately whenever targeting would-be pass catchers aside from Davis.

after I read about it I figured he would stay in college. Those rah rah coaches rarely work out in the nfl. Oregon isn't facing any sanctions either. Kellys thought frame is that he didn't want to worry about NCAA sanctions anymore

Honestly, I think that's fair. In Smith, last night, I saw a guy that looked scared to attempt the big play. He wouldn't pull the trigger, it seemed, unless it was Vernon Davis. However, maybe a portion of that was the Giants defense. But it certainly seemed Smith's reticence to throw the ball down field hurt them a lot.

Eli maybe didn't look like a beast, but he certainly managed the game better. He also has more than receiver to throw it to. Unless it was to Davis and the occasional screen to Gore, Smith looked terrible. Eli can look horrible at times, but he still is capable of leading a team to victory even on the worst of days. That's the difference between an elite QB and a average QB like Smith.

Smith's predictably poor performance is only half the story...Perry Fewell's ability to kickstart the Giants once suspect defense into high gear is the other half...sure, it was huge getting the front four healthy, but Fewell has cobbled together a respectable LB crew w/ the help of a relic like Chase Blackburn and a rookie in Michael Boley*...and his work with a secondary once marred by miscommunication and gaffes has been stellar...how this guy is not a top target for a head coaching gig is beyond me...fuck Chip Kelly...hire Perry Fewell.

* Meant Greg Jones.

Fewell was always in the conversation for head coaching positions after the 07-08 win, and I'd imagine he'll be again (win or lose) after this one. I think this time he'll probably get a gig, though.

But he's done a great job getting that secondary to be cohesive after it lost what? 4 players before the season started? One thing is for sure, though, Aaron Ross, with the chances in the world to be an important cog in that secondary, looks poor when on the field. The dude can't play.

Ross blows...and Webster is prone to getting burnt alive a bit too often as Vernon Davis proved yesterday...the play of the Giants' safeties has been huge in the playoffs, and the rookie Prince Amukamara (or whatever the fuck it is) has played well since returning from his injury...has helped them mask Ross' shortcomings.

In an interview with the Indianapolis Star, Peyton Manning (neck surgeries) said he has no imminent plans to retire, and acknowledged that he has "no idea" in what direction Colts owner Jim Irsay is headed at quarterback.
Manning admitted he doesn't know whether he'll be healthy by the time his $28M option bonus is due on March 8. (Obviously, he's not healthy now.) Manning even took some rather veiled shots at the state of the Colts' organization. "I’m not in a very good place for healing, let’s say that," Manning said of the Colts' facility. "It’s not a real good environment down there right now, to say the least. Everybody’s walking around on eggshells." Manning is working out daily, but he stopped short of guaranteeing he'll play in 2012. If Manning does play football again, the smart money says it won't be with the Colts.

I'd like to be a fly on the wall in Irsay's office...there's a lot of info that is being kept under wraps b/t the Colts and Manning re: his injury...I doubt he'll ever play again...IMO, the Colts are prepared to make a tough decision based on not-yet-reported info, but Manning has yet to come to grips with the possibility that the show is over...he's a class act, but he could soon enter the realm of great players who didn't know when to hang it up.

Only time will tell I guess. He will make a great offensive coordinater and potentially head coach when he retires. I have hope for him. There hasn't been another qb in history that is on the level with Peyton manning. I feel like he
Could play qb with his brain and penningtons arm and be an all pro
