I think Mastodon is the most obvious choice. Well, actually, Metallica is probably the most most obvious choice.

EDIT: And Neurosis.

Katatonia & Amorphis come to mind, but they've gotten better IMO.

Oh and Testament went from 80's sounding thrash to heavy ass DM after noodle boy left. But I guess he's back now.

that cant be the same band. unlike mastodon who are just being lazy as fuck, this band switched genres. they went from blackened death metal to emo/punk. the 2 types of music are so far off from each other that i think it is 2 different bands with the same name. im going to check and find out. and ADAM. pearl jam has always been gay

Same band--probably has had lineup changes though. I'd guess most bands with significant changes in sound have. Think Genesis!

Did you know the Flaming Lips used to sound like this?

Man I love that album.

Therion. Their early stuff is sloppy, grimy Swedish Death Metal. Their later stuff is progressive, experimental, expansive metal.

You could take Bark Psychosis as a good example. Started out as a Napalm Death tribute band and morphed into an almost ethereal post rock outfit.

Gorefest is another band that went through a heavy transformation. The Gathering and Enslaved are a couple of others.

Despite their complete move away from doomy stoner blues to balls out trad metal they remain one of my favourite bands. All 5 of their albums slay but the first will always be the best for me.

All of them except AC/DC, Motorhead and a handful of stoner rock bands that still sound like Foghat.

Good call on Journey! I just picked up the "in the beginning" tape at the thrift last week. Pretty much the same shift REO Speedwagon went thru.

How about BLACK FLAG ? I like a buncha the later stuff but it was quite a transition.
