FUCK YEAH!!

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Eagle Rock Entertainment will release the landmark metal debut of 1982, "Under The Blade" by TWISTED SISTER, on May 31. The CD — originally produced by Pete Way of UFO — will also contain four tracks from their 1982 "Ruff Cuts" EP (never before available on CD) as well as "Shoot 'Em Down", an '82 live track from England's prestigious Reading Festival. The lavish package features the original "Under The Blade" cover, which has not appeared on any domestic versions of the album until now, and reflects the original Secret Records track list and remastered audio mix.

The DVD contains the entire previously-unreleased Reading concert. Vocalist Dee Snider, guitarists Jay Jay French and Eddie Ojeda, bassist Mark Mendoza and drummer A.J. Pero gave the crowd something they had not exactly ever seen before. It was, for all intents and purposes, a coming-out affair for this great band. They play as if their life depends upon it. They play as if they have something to prove. And they did. They're young, hungry, determined and wind up headbanging with a desperate ferocity usually reserved for those kinds of life-altering performances that make a band. This is one of those performances. The set concludes with a show-stopping version of "It's Only Rock 'N' Roll" as the band jams out with Pete Way and MOTÖRHEAD's Fast Eddie Clarke and Lemmy! The DVD also includes 40 minutes of newly shot interviews with the band about the recording of "Under The Blade" and the Reading Festival.

French joined the band SILVER STAR, a New Jersey-based "glitter band" in December 1972. The group, whose original purpose was to be the New Jersey version of the NEW YORK DOLLS, changed their name to TWISTED SISTER on Valentine's Day 1973. The band, however, continually changed lineups and didn't take off until Snider joined in 1976. The lineup didn't fully coalesce until 1982 with the final addition of drummer A.J. Pero.

"Under The Blade" first came out on an independent U.K.-based label called Secret Records, but really gained momentum when Atlantic Records released a different mix of the album nationally in 1985 while taking advantage of the bands newly minted stardom. Their meteoric ascent came in tandem with the simultaneous rise of MTV. This version you now have in your hands is the most requested and sought after. The new digital remastered original mix of "Under the Blade".

CD track listing:

01. What You Don't Know (Sure Can Hurt You)
02. Bad Boys (Of Rock 'n' Roll)

Ah, the memories. BFBS (British Forces Network Service) aired an hour-long Heavy Metal-program, I think on Tuesday night, when I lived in Berlin in the early 80s. That was not only the only program for heavy rock, the DJ Tony Jasper played new obscure stuff too. Thats where I heard Twisted Sister for the first time ("What You Don't Know (Sure Can Hurt You)") and when I went to my favorite record store the next day they actually carried the EP. Played it to death. Eddie Kramer was the best producer TS ever had.

One of the most intense bands I've ever seen. I was lucky enough to catch them at Lamours in Brooklyn a few times before they got massive all over the world. They were a huge band in the NY/NJ area playing clubs. Their audience was rabid and scary. Made the mistake of taking 2 hits of mescalin at one of their shows. Lamours used to show weird horror movies in between bands and I was having a bit of a freak out. Made the mistake of taking a few hits off a joint from a dude in the crowd. Of course it was dusted. When TS finally came out I was in the front row and having Dee screaming in my face was terrifying.

A friend of mine is sending me a DVD of a classic show from 1980 - the famous "Disco Sucks" rally filmed at the 2001 Club in Brooklyn where Saturday Night Fever was filmed.

I didn't see them until 84. Great show. It was before Stay Hungry came out but TS never got big in Germany anyway, so it was really more of an underground show.

Those freely passed on joints at Lamours were cool. I saw a Ramones/King Flux-show there in 85, had hardly money for beer (tight traveling budget) but got righteously wasted that way.

People used to share their weeed back then. The older (and more psychotic) patrons of Lamour were pretty good about encouraging the younger (and scared) members of the audience to pass it around.

The package from my friend arrived today. He sent me CD's of 3 complete Twisted Sister shows (one each from 1979, 1981 and 1982) in addition to the 1980 DVD. The anti-disco stage raps are awesome!

Can't get enough of "What You Don't Know (Sure Can Hurt You)." To my wife's amusement, bordering on chagrin.

My review went up on the Ripple Effect today. There are some mint live clips on their page.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------

http://ripplemusic.blogspot.com/2011/06 ... blade.html

I’m sure you’ve heard of Twisted Sister but do you know about Twisted FUCKIN Sister? Twisted Sister is the band you saw on MTV and heard on the radio starting in 1984 but loooong before that Twisted Fuckin Sister were blasting fast n loud in the bars and clubs of the tri-state NYC area. In the late 70’s/early 80’s heyday they were one of the heaviest bands out there. They battled against demon disco forces and helped make heavy metal a huge phenomenon on the east coast. They played 4 or 5 nights a week in any dump that could contain them and their ever growing fan base of rowdy sick motherfuckin friends (S.M.F.’s).

I’d heard the name and legend from older burnouts in high school but was first indecently exposed to them when they appeared on the short lived Flo & Eddie TV show. I was already a huge Alice Cooper fan and when I saw Twisted Sister on TV I knew these freaks would be right up my alley. They were introduced and then exploded into the song “Under The Blade.” It made my little 9th grade mind explode and I went berserk in front of the TV. Luckily it was late at night and no one could see me headbanging and jumping off the couch in my pj’s. Not long after that I tracked down this album, the band’s 1982 full length debut album Under The Blade. Twisted Sister had been releasing singles on their own labels for years but was unable to get a record deal. Finally, a punk label from England called Secret Records (home of The Exploited) took a chance on them. Long out of print, Under The Blade is back and better than ever.

Under The Blade has always suffered from a thin, low budget sound but the songs are so full of aggression and belligerence it’s never been a problem. The album was produced by Pete Way of UFO but who knows how sober he was during the recording. Twisted Sister had been playing these songs live for years so he probably stayed out of the way and made sure they were fired up enough to deliver good takes. “What You Don’t Know (Sure Can Hurt You)” was their set opener at the time and issues a challenge to rock out or get the fuck out. When I finally got to see Twisted Sister for the first time at Lamour in Brooklyn Dee got right in my face and screamed the line “HOW DO YOU LIKE IT SO FAR?” I like it just fine and still do!

Catchy tunes like the AC/DC influenced “Bad Boys (Of Rock N Roll)” and “Shoot ‘Em Down” point towards the commercial direction that would eventually make them huge stars a few years later. Great songs, but hardcore S.M.F.’s like me always went ballistic for the Judas Priest inspired “Sin After Sin” and the always intense title track. “Destroyer” is probably the heaviest song they ever wrote. Slow and powerful with creepy heavy breathing during the intro, it’s obviously Black Sabbath influenced but sounds more like the Cro-Mags. This was always a major crowd pleaser with a sea of fists pumping the air. “Run For Your Life” starts out slow and heavy before shifting into major high gear. But my favorite Twisted Sister song has always been “Tear It Loose.” It’s a major headbanging boogier. Just imagine if Motorhead was drinking some of Jim Dandy’s moonshine while imbibing some pure crystal meth. You don’t even really have to imagine it since Fast Eddie Clarke plays dueling leads with Jay Jay French on it. “The Day Of The Rocker” is the last song and thuds along like AC/DC or Rose Tattoo at their blusiest.

Even better than having the album back in print is the bonus DVD of Twisted Sister’s notorious set at the Reading Festival in the summer of 1982. I had seen the photos in Kerrang magazine and heard that they blew away the crowd. The footage is everything I had hoped for and more. They come out blazing and basically destroy the audience with full on MC5/Ted Nugent energy and attitude. English festivals are notorious for the crowd throwing shit at bands. Within seconds rolls of toilet paper and eggs are flying up on to the stage. The band never flinches and Dee even challenges the entire crowd to fight after the show. They blaze through 7 songs from Under The Blade with supreme gusto and confidence. To jack up the energy level even more they end the set with their raucous cover of “It’s Only Rock N Roll.” During the breakdown who strolls out on to the stage but Pete Way, Fast Eddie Clarke and Lemmy. Not only do you have a triple axe attack but three bass players, too. Fast Eddie had quit Motorhead not too long before this show and this was the first time Lemmy and Eddie appeared in public together. Not a bad show, eh? The rest of the DVD contains interviews with the band about the Reading Festival and the making of Under The Blade. Great stuff, but the live footage is nothing short of totally mint deluxe.

Fans of Twisted Sister and Twisted FUCKIN Sister are ordered to pick this muther up at once. You won’t be sorry. Other good news for S.M.F.’s is that Rhino is FINALLY releasing an album from the landmark shows recorded at London’s Marquee club in March, 1983. Some of the recordings turned up as B-sides but never a complete show. Until that comes out, keep blasting this one and your worn out tapes of the killer 1982 WBAB radio broadcast from Hammerheads on Long Island. If you need a copy, lemmy know. I’d be glad to hook you up.

I'm willing to bet he was totally "Waysted".

@woody,

I just read your post with.

"A friend of mine is sending me a DVD of a classic show from 1980 - the famous "Disco Sucks" rally filmed at the 2001 Club in Brooklyn where Saturday Night Fever was filmed."

I've been looking all over for this. In my younger years I was lucky enough to hook up with Twisted Sister, and being an artist, they asked me to paint them their TS backdrop, and create some cool props like a coffin filled with disco albums and also a Saturday Night Fever sign they could blow up... well this turned to be for the concert when they rocked 2001 Odyssey disco 6/18/1980. That show was totally awesome and when Dee had us bring out the Saturday Night Fever sign and then blow it up to the start of "We're not gonna take it" still gives me chills.

That show was freaking awesome and Twisted Sister ROCKED!!!!

So, if you could, would you help out a fellow friend of SMF? I would love get a copy of that "Disco Sucks" DVD, I would be more than willing to pay you.

Thanks

PatStarace

No shit! My friend bought that bootleg DVD at some record show. Another friend of mine tried to copy it but was unable to. I have another friend with a real fancy computer that will hopefully be able to do it. If he can copy it, I will gladly send you a copy. That show is insane. People smashing disco albums all night and when they light that Saturday Night Fever poster on fire everyone goes nuts.

How is this in relation to the show(s) you were kind enough to ship a CDR of to me? Is it the same show(s) or entirely different?

The Hammerheads show (August 1982) is the best. It's 2 full sets right after they recorded Under The Blade and has a bunch of songs they retired not long after that show. It also has their incredible version of "Summertime Blues."

This show from 1983 is from right before You Can't Stop Rock N Roll came out. You can tell they're really out to prove something to the UK headbangers. Dee does a great rap about how much he hates new wave. The packaging is killer. The sleeve is about the size of a 10" in the shape of the TS logo.

If money's tight you could live without it but it still kicks all kind of major ass.
