I'm finding it hard to satisfy my craving for different beers in Sydney. I can't seem to find a bottleshop that carries enough of a variety. Melbourne's different, one bottle-o down there has 600+ beers, and even my brother's local in a shitty suburb has 200+ I've pretty much worked my way through everything my local carries that's actually worth drinking.

Sounds like you might've found your new career.

Be dead from Cirrhosis within a year!

I did look fairly seriously at opening up a bar a few years back. To the point of actually finding a premises and trying to get funding. Couldn't raise the dough.

Goose Island has been bought by Anheuser Busch.
Well, they already owned more than half, just bought the rest.

Just dug into the first two bottles of the Brew Dog 'IPA is DEAD' four pack. The idea is they brewed an IPA beer four times, the exact same malt brew, but used four different hops from four different continents as bitter hops and dry hops. Started off with the Citra, but should have had the Nelson Sauvin first. The Citra is spikyer than the NS, and I cleaned my palate with some bush tea between the two bottles.

They are nice. Get it.

Those beers you tried the other night, Paul, they on tap at Falling Rock or your personal collection?

Tried a Trois Pistol from Unibroue tonight. Took 2 sips and dumped the rest out, I thought it was pretty disgusting and did not care that I was wasting a couple bucks. That stuff tasted like bubble gum, imo, gross.

Instead went to a Tank 7 farmhouse ale from Boulevard....much better.

Adam,
The "picked up" beers I bought. The "had some" beers were from the bar. Some were gifts from beer travelers (like the Ithica Blueberry and the Cascade Rouge), some were from the bar. Sometimes one of the owners and the rest of us feel like digging into the bottle collection and trying some different brews. You know, for educational purposes.
The Red Poppy and Friek are currently available there. Both ain't cheap.

Funny about the Trois Pistole. I used to love that beer. It is very sweet/malty, but I still dig it. It goes great with a nice piece of chocolate cake.
Don't give up on Unibroue, though. They make awesome beer. Their original three beers were designed by the retired brewer from Duvel and their current head brewer worked at Chimay for many years. He's designed most of their recent releases. I like Maudite and Don De Dieu a lot. Oh, and La Fin Du Monde - one of my favorite tripels.

Can we talk about "standard" beers for a while?

This is my go-to brew

Image

Made of dirty tasting Pride of Ringwood hops (which I hate) and bottle fermented so it looks like mud. If anyone sees it in their local, I'd appreciate a review. If you can get the green label stuff, it's exactly the same, but watered down, and occupies the same space that PBR does amongst hipsters.

I don't really care for the Cooper's Sparkling; just not my thing.

My everyday brews tend to be Joe's Pilsner from Avery. A pilsner made for lovers of IPAs.
I also like Full Sail Session.

Yuengling was my every day choice until I moved out to Colorado and lost access to it.

Milk Stout was my go to beer more or less this past winter and Dale's Pale Ale seems to be my go to now that its getting warmer out.

Currently, though, drinking an Oatmeal Stout from Crabtree. Liking it a good deal...

Cool.

As for Unibroue, I'd be open to giving them another chance but there's no rush. Maybe if I find another liquor store selling their other stuff in singles I'd go go for it.

RIGHT NOW I AM HAVING A LA TRAPPE BLONDE AND IT REALLY IS A GOOD BLOND BEER

SOMEHOW BLOND BEERS ARE SUITED FOR SPRING, FRUITY BEER, JUST A LITTLE BETTER THAN A REGULAR PILSNER, A LITTLE STRONGER BUT NOT OVERDONE

HURRAY FOR BLOND BEER, FOR BEING A BB ALSO

This is mostly accurate and I don't think I could do better.
My current favorite is Russian River's Redemption. A great beer that is exactly what it is.

Had My Antonia from Dogfishhead tonight. A very nice Imperial Pilsner with a slight caramel nose. and a wonderful hop finish.

Just got home from work and checked this one out for my first time (I bought a mixed 6 pack the other day and this was one of the picks). Never been a huge brown ale fan but have come around to them within the past year. I like ones with a nuttiness to them. I am really liking this one.

Had a long-delayed party last weekend. Seven course meal and a ton of beer.
Yum.

Image

Kuehunen Mayhem, Rock Art Hopmonster, Hoppin' Frog Mean Manalishi DIPA, Duvel Tripel Hop, Unita Labyrinth Black Ale, Lupulus (from Spain's first craft brewery - okay, not great).

Image

De Proef/Bell's collaboration Van Twee (porter with cherry juice added), Unibroue 10th Anniversary (this year will be 18), Funkwerks Saison, Short's Bloody Beer (brewed with roma tomatoes & tellicherry pepper), Short's Bourbon Barrel Aged Black Sustenance.

Image

Nimbus Monkeyshine, Short's Anniversary Blood Orange Wheat Wine, Bell's 2003 Third Coast Old Ale, Short's Soft Parade (aka, Ye Ol' Legspreader), Bell's Hopslam, Bell's Cherry Stout, Dry Dock Seven Seas, Odell Myrcenary DIPA

Wow. SL, that's a pretty nice batch of beers you got there.
Any standouts?
Failures?
Recommendations?
Do you buy the Short's in Colorado?

I've had this one a couple times since and found that I actually don't care for this one after all. Not sure how to describe what it is about it that I dislike, it almost has a rubbery like quality to it.

I did try Anderson Valley's Barney Flats Oatmeal Stout and I do like that one a lot. Rogue's is still my favorite Oatmeal Stout I have tried, by a good margin to any other, but this Anderson Valley probably falls in at #2.

Also, that is an impressive collection. I don't know if I'd be as kind with my friends to share all that with them.

Where did you find the Bell's stuff? Locally?

I HAD to share it. I think I'd be dead if I tried to drink all that stuff on my own. Most of it was above 8%abv.

Nope, you can't buy Short's here nor the Bell's. My sister bought the Bell's in Arizona. There are constant rumors that Bell's is coming out here, but I've heard them so often I'll believe that shit when I see the bottles on the shelves.
The Van Twee WAS available out here, but that's it from Bell's.

Short's is from Northern Michigan and all of that stuff was bought by me at the brewery over the last several years. Honestly, I think I waited too long on some of them as they were okay rather than great. This party was supposed to happen about two years ago, then one year ago, etc. It was already delayed twice this year so the beer suffered. Well, some of it did.
The Van Twee is starting to go sour, which was a pleasant development. It was great when it came out and I'll be sure to leave my other bottles to develop further.

The hoppy stuff was all good: Myrcenary, Hoppin' Frog, Hopslam, etc.
The Short's stuff that stood out: Black Cherry Porter, Peaches and Creme, Abnormal Genius, Bloody Beer, Carob Stout.

The Unita beer was good too. Buy anything you find from their Crooked Line. I really like their DIPA called Detour. Be sure to find the freshest bottle you can. It's great when fresh and nice when not.

Hey JJ

I have this waiting for you in the garage so if we meet somewhere around the 013 next week it can be yours ;-)

Image

Also I am driving back to belgium every night so if you have like a shopping list, who knows what comes over the border.

Oh man, that looks delicious, thanks much. Enjoying a regular ol' Palm as I type this, actually. Would definitely appreciate you bringing that along to 013 on Thursday. We can figure a place to meet up before the show and I'll gladly take that sixer off your hands. Thanks for saving it for me.

I am surprised, this is really refreshing for a Macro. I could easily put back two six-packs of these.
