Here is the deal on the Metallaiance show:
8 bands total, the first band is a local opener on each stop. In Dallas we had Turbid North who were just signed last week. Post apocolyptic speed sludge is the best way to describe them, killer band. They went on at 5:45 and had like a 20 min set.
So here was the lineup: Turbid North, Atlas Moth, Howl, Red Fang, Kylesa, Crowbar, Saint Vitus, Helmet.
I missed all of Atlas Moth, heard they were cool. Caught about 2 songs from Howl, cool band but they suffered from a poor mix and not enough volume - overall not my usual style. Next came Red Fang, again suffered from a poor mix and the vocals were non existant. I kept thinking this is a pretty big tour and the first two bands sounded like they were playing in a shitty club. Red Fang was good in spite of the poor sound and the new songs very nice, I think they played 5 songs.
Next was Kylesa, and given the sound of the first two bands and the little I had heard from them before, I really didn't care to see them. Went out to the bar area for some food and came in halfway through their set. Big mistake to miss any of their set - the sound issues were 100% fixed and they were kicking major ass and sounded monstrous. Like a psychedelic, heavier version of Clutch is the best way to describe them. I was frankly blown away by them - best band of the night hands down. I am now a huge fan.
Then Crowbar, wow - maybe the heaviest live band I've ever seen and I've been going to rock and metal shows since 1979 and have seen about everybody who is anybody. Crushing, loud, and tight. Great live band. I was a moderate Crowbar fan, but now they've moved up a number of rungs, I am now a big fan.
My Vitus review was already posted above. Helmet, I left two songs in, didn't do much for me. I've never been a fan - sure I'll jam to Unsung when it hits the radio and I've heard their stuff through the years and it just not resonating with me (I remember getting a copy of Betty back in the day and hating it lol). They were good and tight and sounded excellent, but they just do little for me. After Vitus, 60% of the audience left and it was midnight so I bailed. Had to work this morning early.
All the bands played a short set. Crowbar and Vitus I think both played 40 minutes.
I had a blast - and from Wino to Dave to all of Red Fang and Crowbar, all hanging out and taking pictures with fans and just hanging with the crowd. Was really cool.
